Stock Sur Ron X Top Speed Test VS 54 Tooth Sprocket + Range Comparison

  • I did a GPS top speed test on my stock Sur Ron X and then geared it down with a 54 tooth sprocket. for both speed tests I travel to distance of 7.4 miles and the results were surprisingly good in favor of the 54 tooth! these small changes and upgrades make a huge difference for electric motorcycles whereas on a gas dirt bike you would notice a difference in torque on the lower end and that's about it.

For those looking for more Top-End Torque for the Sur Ron, the 52T Rear Sprocket will deliver. It adds 20% to the Acceleration and Hill Climbing while taking the top speed down from 45mph to 38mph! So a bigger Sprocket means more torque but less top end speed!

I've tried almost all of the sprockets available on my SurronX and at 185LBS rider, I like the 58T the best. Still fast enough for the trails but also enough power to get me up steep hills. If you weigh a little more then maybe go with the 60T and if you are 165lbs or less then go with the 54T.
In my opinion, 64T takes away too much top speed so I would not recommend that unless maybe you are 240LBS or more and need it to lug you up hills.
In my opinion, the 52T should come default as even with a really light rider its great over the 48T and especially if you are woods riding you don't need to go 50MPH on this little bike.
Now if we could mod this bike to have two gears, at 185LBS I'd go with the 64T and the 54T and normally only use the 54T but switch to the 64T on really steep hill climbs.
In a perfect world, this bike would be 72V, 52T sprocket and about 12HP vs the stock of about 4HP. You can do that now with some after market mods but i am looking forward to when that is stock as this bike would be amazing in that configuration.
This bike is a blast! Loving it especially on the tight trails.
Battery technology is really the limiting factor these days but that only going to continue to improve and eventually electric bikes will take over motocross.
If you have not checked it out yet, watch some videos of the Surron Storm Bee full size dirtbike. Looks great but may be just a bit too heavy thanks to that huge battery for some. One day you could replace that battery with a lighter more powerful one and make the bike even better. I believe the controller can handle 150v on the storm bee but again today's battery technology is the limiting factor since a 150v battery would just add a ton more weight to a bike that is already borderline too heavy. I'd bet that with a 150v battery the full size storm bee could compete with 450cc bikes if we could keep the weight of the bike under 250LBS and if the electric motor can handle it.

The trick to wheelies is sitting back on it and really hanging your weight. Thinking about keeping your arms straight will keep you from leaning forward. But you need to get good at covering the rear brake to do that, otherwise you'll loop out every time. This is at least what I figured out learning to wheelie my mountain bike.

@@justin169169 honestly 8 have no idea how much a two speed transmission would weigh but it would be nice. bikes can have pinion transmission upto 18 gears, motorcycle have transmission too. ev's or road electric motorcycles dont need transmission except for the Taycan cause they have enough torque and motors that can rev high enough. but if you want to do serious off road a two speed transmission would help too. it should be possible to do a lightweight 2 speed transmission for the sur Ron , the motor torque is not so high, it is a high revving motor and its the gear reduction from the rear sprocket that gives high wheel torque. but in terms of weight/cost/performance improvement it will probably never beat increasing the controller output of the battery voltage, unless you really want to do trial/ hard Enduro at low speed and high speed riding on the road too. it would make sense if those transmission were mass produced and cheap enough, and also if motors were optimized for a narrower rpm range but more power/efficiency in this range.
Also shifting would not be a big concern because it would be 2 speeds anyway, and you could still do a lot of things without shifting. typically only requiring to shift when changing the type of terrain road/off road or when doing launches from 0 to top speed

larger sprocket on the rear gives you more torque and less speed, smaller gear in the rear will increase speed and lower torque, as for power consumption the higher torque uses less horse power to propel the bike, going with a smaller gear will use more horse power to keep the bike in motion at the faster speed. the gear ratio plays a big part in balancing the power for speed vs the torque for climbing and starting from a dead stand still, as well as power consumption. some where between 48 teeth to 50 is probably the most in efficiency, dropping to a 46t or going up to a 50t might give an interesting result. any more than that may compromise electrical power efficiency.

Speed is calculated by controller. It checks how many turnovers front sprocket makes. If you change size of wheel or sprocket, controller will show incorrect speed and odometer. More biggest one of them will increase speed on display, but in real you will move slowly.
