  • My experience with the 4090 on VRCHAT
    Been using it for 2 months now and I am absolutely amazed by it, and cant wait to be able to fully use it with an upgraded CPU as well. Overall full worlds with no safety settings can be attained but with low 20 FPS. However Normal worlds with around 40 people will be around 30fps+ in a similar situation

    Honestly, from my experience CPU makes a much bigger impact for VRC. I recently upgraded my PC. Went from a 2080 to a 4080 and the performance improvement was there, but still rarely saw frames above 40-60 in publics, and not above 90 in empty worlds. But after I upgraded my CPU from a 3700x to a 5800x3d, I would consistently reach 200-300 fps in empty or less populated worlds (like treehouse in the shade) and 30-50 fps in full club events with 60-80 players.

      Went from a 1060 3gb to an undervolted 3080 10gb with the same CPU (3500X I think) and the difference is IMMENSE and made the game not only playable but beautiful
      I think having more ram in a card matters a lot and a lot more than if it is newer necessarily
      The CPU still struggles to quickly load avatars without glitching in busy club instances even when I have it lightly overclocked but it doesn't appear to be maxing out or overheating or anything
      A CPU upgrade is in the works as I know that this game is super CPU heavy

      Update: I upgraded :] loving the performance. Thought it might be nice to come back and give a little insight as it's been 4 months since I wrote here. From my experiences thus far with the RTX 4090, can say it was definitely worth the upgrade, especially for VR. Can't compare it to the 3090 given I upgraded from a GTX series card, but I can say it hasn't failed me in any stretch thus far.

    From what I know, one huge upgrade is buying X3D CPU from AMD. A friend of mine has it and compared to my 5900X, he gets basically the exact same FPS as me BUT his cpu frame times are literally cut in half. Like I'll have some stutters/lag in "Into The Radius" from time to time while his is just a perfectly straight line with 0 stutters. We both have RTX 2080s

    CPU matters so much. All of those physbones are what are really holding back things. If you could limit physbone simulation distance like you can avatars, that'd help much more when VRAM isn't the issue. It would also be nice of VRChat could use more cores of a CPU. I have a Ryzen 9 5950X, but it doesn't seem to use more then one CCX (8-cores) worth of resources, and doesn't even use them at much.

Fps is the same but feels infinitely better, and I've yet to crash from performance issues. Definitely worth it and makes vr so much better. In private worlds with just me and maybe one or two other people, if the world isn't super poorly optimized I can even hit the 144hz cap on my index and it feels amazing.

    A 3090 is probably the best value for VRChat, I got it mainly for VRChat and it's such a great experience. The memory throughput of the 4090 isn't much higher than the 3090. The huge 384-bit bus width is the same for both, as is the memory capacity so the 4090 probably wouldn't be a notable difference for VRChat, not least for the fact that (for me with my 5950x and 64gb of ram, at least) the 3090 runs everything you could possibly want it to in VRChat. I never have to hide avi's anymore or turn down settings to prevent lag, it's great.

    • @VirtualWeeknd
      @VirtualWeeknd  Před rokem +1

      Absolutely! The 3090 is the best value because all you really do need is the Vram because VRC will use up every bit of memory it can use

    • @Mom19
      @Mom19 Před 11 měsíci

      Yeah same here. The issue I have: I need tons of VRAM, but I don't even need that much GPU core performance. A 3070 is actually running it similarly well to a 3090. I don't have a 4090 to compare against tho. It probably wouldn't make much of a difference either probably. I currently have a 7900X and switching to a 3D CPU would make a much bigger difference imo. Especially since my 3090 is barely being utilized, especially when you have some CPU frame time spikes. All kinds of stuff related to memory, seem to matter a lot here. 4090 has similar memory bandwidth to a 3090 and I don't even use the core that much. Since I have a dedicated VR PC, its most likely to be completely useless to me. I can't validate that without hardware to test with tho

  • @SargonDragon
    @SargonDragon Před rokem +6

    The 4090 can have limited usefulness in VRChat if you don't have a high resolution VR headset to drive with it. If you look at your performance using fpsVR, you'll probably find that you're CPU limited now while the 4090 is barely breaking a sweat.
    I'm running a Pimax 8X at ~5000x3000 per eye with a 4090, and even then in worlds with many avatars, I'm CPU limited most of the time with my 5900X. In a world with 30-40 avatars, I'll be getting ~60fps when the GPU would be getting 75fps without the CPU bottleneck.

    • @Fox_McCloud
      @Fox_McCloud Před rokem +3

      I'd strongly consider swapping out the 5900X for a 5800X3D if your primary use case is VRChat; Unity games are able to take gigantic advantage from the huge CPU cache.

  • @Kalrisi_Rei
    @Kalrisi_Rei Před rokem +3

    The most noticeable improvement a 4090 will have for something like VRC is really gonna be the resolution you can push; With a 3080/3090 alone you can push 500% max Render res; You'll have 30-40fps either way if you are at 100% res or 500% res because VRC is just that CPU heavy. I have a 6700xt (Mine is a bit stronger than your average 3070) but I run about 300% (3.5k by 3.8k roughly on my setup) res at get anywhere from 40-120fps on Q2 with Virtual desktop. I can have everyone shown in most cases in a world (But why would you? There is a setting you can change in VRC now where instead of turning people into robotos you can make it so they just don't render after a certain distance; This helps you not load people you can't even see on the other side of a world) and my frame rate never drops below the 30's (And stays at 80+ if I use the distance avatar hider setting). My setup and explanations are as follows;
    -5600x OC/UV with PBO's turned on (VRC.. CPU CPU CPU. YOUR CPU WILL PROBABLY HAVE THE LARGEST OVERALL EFFECT ON OVERALL PERFORMANCE!!!)
    -6700xt 12gb OC/UV with SAM* enabled (VRAM amount can make a noticeable improvement for both playing at high res/loading tons of avis with higher quality textures!! If you run a card with 4-6gb of VRAM you will have noticable drops in heavy load cases)
    -32GB RAM (RAM amount will greatly reduce stutters and RAM speed allows faster communication between the CPU/GPU which also reduces hitching)
    -SSD (If you run any modern game on an HDD.. I am sorry.. They are a lot cheaper now and is a must-have upgrade for new game out for both loading times and hitching reasons. Definitely helps to have your VRC cache set to an SSD atleast- Biggest improvement in avatar loading besides internet)
    -Personal ASUS Wifi 6 gaming router just for ethernet use on my PC and exclusive wireless use for my Headset. I am listing this in the case of wireless users; Its not your internet speed that matters! Its the reliability of your connection and the transfer speeds of your router, weirdly enough was also a performance improvement in VRC for me atleast, atleast visual smoothness even when hardwired
    *If you are an AMD CPU+GPU user ENABLE Smart Access Memory. [SAM] It can be a HUGE performance improvement in some games (and less in others but still helps the 1% and .1% FPS)
    SAM allows you CPU to grab as much of your GPU memory as it needs at once unlike normally where your CPU has to access VRAM 128mb at a time. In modern games where VRAM is heavily utilized this means up to 15-25% free performance in some cases, and 10-13% on average. There are older games and some other games that don't benefit from SAM at all basically (1-3% fps boosts) but there is no reason not to turn it on. In the case of VRC however, turning on SAM was a huge help for loading avis and reducing stutters and lagspikes when loading worlds/Avatars with lots/high res textures; EX. Situations that would rely on VRAM.
    Resizable Bar is also another option if you don't run an AMD CPU+GPU combo if your Mobo supports it; but from aggressively testing it on my old 2060.. Rebar does not help nearly to the same extent as SAM does and only works in a select few games (You can add more manually) but is still worth turning on. Free FPS is Free FPS.
    For reference through testing with 3 friends;
    A 4090 will not out perform a 3090, Neither will it out perform a 3070 or my 6700xt in VRC!
    What it will do is allow you to push a higher resolution AT the similar framerates!!!
    I cannot express this enough! All 4 of us with these different GPU's maintained the same framerates at 300% res staying at about 30-40fps~ in a packed friends+ Black cat with 32 people at one mirror with all very poor avatars! The ONLY difference was that the 3090/4090 friend's could keep that *same* framerate going up to 500% where me and the 3070 user would go down to 15fps~
    VRC is 60% CPU 30% RAM and 10% GPU in order of priority roughly as I have seen since playing since 2016.
    TLDR: Your GPU means jack shite if you have a 2070+ Level GPU for actual FPS gains and just allows you to push higher resolutions at the same or slightly improved framerates; Your CPU matters 10x more, and don't skip the RAM or SSD! My setup above runs this game at a playable level just as much as the the 4090 in the video minus the potential resolution. I think the importance of new more powerful GPU's will matter more for visual quality once headset resolutions take a bigger jump natively. a Native 4K experience will always looks sharper than a 1080-upscaled-to-4K experience, especially when its right next to your eyes! Hope this helps anyone looking to upgrade their PC for VRChat or VR in general! Bonus tip: Raise your steamVR resolution if you do have a stronger GPU, just find wherever it starts to effect your performance and slide it just a bit back from that point.. You can gain a little extra clarity for no performance hit.
    OH! AND FOR ANY OTHER VR GAME A 4090 IS GODSEND! THIS IS JUST FOR VRCHAT!

    • @Kalrisi_Rei
      @Kalrisi_Rei Před rokem

      @@beamis Thats said mostly because of the encoder on AMD Graphics cards, but I think that's more relevant to the Quest 2 wired connection. Either way from personal experience I really have never noticed a downgrade in visuals going from the 2060 EVGA XC Ultra to the 6700xt I use now (actually the complete opposite because the 6700xt is a way more powerful card and allows me to push higher super sampling and refresh rates)
      I'd say it's not worth it because the 3060ti is a downgrade in about 80% of games VS the 6700xt except a few Nvidia centric games. I used VR headsets like the quest 2, Reverb G2 and now the quest pro and I can't say I've noticed any of those encoder issues myself. Also don't quote me but I believe the latest AMD driver fixed an issue with some software bitrates being limited to only 100mb/s but I don't think that was relevant to Quest 2 streaming in the first place and was only broken in another one of their beta drivers.
      Unless you really care for something like Ray tracing.. but then again the lower end RTX series are half a gimmick since they tend to struggle with it on and bring you frame rates down a lot more than its worth. Atleast was so in my experience with the 2060 and still with the 3060 from what I have seen from benchmarks. Personal take tho!
      My GPU is the 6700xt and from my comment above I gave a few of my performance metrics. I play the game through virtual desktop too on my quest pro instead of a wire
      TLDR: I use the 6700xt with a 5600x for VRchat without any issues or problems and my experience is smooth, stable, and clear.

    But it also depends on what you do in VRChat. For just worldhopping and a few people my old radeon 590 was good enough. For DJing in a full party, and beeing in VR for that of course, the 4090 is better than anything else. I eventually bit the bullet and got the 4080. I understand the 4090 is in a totally different class but the experience was 100% better. Hi FPS lots of AVI's huge improvement over the 3080 I had previously . Definitely better than the 7900 xtx. I don't like NVIDIA as a company but I have to admit that the 4080 experience made me regret getting the 7900. I hate that Nvidia makes such good cards and drivers. After using it for 3 days . zero crashes. sure it may still happen and I do occasionally hit the 16mb vram limit but I don't notice it. As for the 7900 XTX. I sent it back. they claim they want to test. If they fix it and refuse to refund me . fine I will sell it for MSR. I don't want to have a card that may age like fine wine and only be usable in 6 months "Maybe"".

    I have an 3080Ti and an Ryzen 7 5800x3d its way more than i need for VRC, If someone has an avatar of more than 200MB, it is a crasher or simply does not take anyone into consideration. Like NOBODY or hardly anyone in VRC has a 3080 or even a 4090. For a person to expect from you that you need to invest YOU more than $2000 to see their avatar is very selfish and therefore I am NOT going to load their avatar. At this point I am very very used to going one by one showing the avatars. It's a bit tedious but it's just not worth ruining your experience for a crasher. Also limiting avatars to 50mb is a good idea, so part of the filtering process is done by the machine for you. Don't get me wrong, I have also done the exact same thing as you and YES VRCHAT looks AMAZING when there is no cap in play and you can see EVERYTHING. But since the EAC implementation we don't have the super specific tools to finely filter people's avatars.

    switching from a 3070 to a 3090 was like a 2x increase in framerate on my quest 2 (supersampled to about 2500x2600 resolution). But I can't justify a 4090 after upgrading to the 3090. I'll wait out the 5090 and use that money for a better headset instead. My friend has a 4090 and he only gets a few fps more than I. I think once you hit 3090 and beyond, vrchat is going to be CPU limited. And if you're on an index, it probably gets cpu limited a lot sooner due to the significantly lower resolution compared to the quest 2.

  • @Fearless13468
    @Fearless13468 Před rokem +12

    I think spending more than $0 on VRChat is not worth it (same sentiment for VRC plus). VRChat runs fine on GPUs with 6GB of VRAM, near perfectly with 8GB and top notch with 12-16GB. Most modern-ish GPUs will work fine. If you want a 4090 for other games, and happen to play VRChat, go ahead. If you want a 4090 just for VRChat, I think it is time to reevaluate what life choices brought you to this point. That is only my opinion though. I play with a 3070, with maxed out settings, on a Reverb G2. I have the show avatar proximity on so I don't render avatars I won't be able to see anyway. I never see lower than 30fps, and get 50-60 on average. I don't like showing all avatars because in my opinion, I don't need to see something I'm not interacting with.
    Edit: Quit trying to flame me in the replies. You're all missing the point. SMH.
    Quite frankly, I don't care if you have a better GPU that me. I don't care that you are stubborn and uncompromising, and only think a game is playable when you are maxing your refresh rate.
    Obviously a 4090 is the best GPU for VRChat. All I'm saying is that in my opinion, if you buy a 4090 just to play VRChat, non-professionally/casually, it is a serious waste of money.
