    This week, we visit a bright and cosy HDB maisonette in Kovan. When homeowners Suren and Esther took over the unit, the original layout was fully covered, with the living room extended onto the balcony. After breaking down a few walls, the new space looks completely different - it’s undoubtedly more spacious looking and open.
    One of the coolest features of the house is the balcony space as the glass doors can be completely opened up to have a seamless entrance into the space from the balcony. And so even if you are sitting outside, it’s like you are still a part of the living room, yet are able to enjoy the outside air.
    Other interesting features include an arch in the living room to soften the look of the space, and a small area dedicated to their mini record collection. They also utilised the space below the staircase to include more storage spaces.
    The master bedroom on the second floor showcases a wall mural that has been hand painted by Geraldine from Ochre Home (one of the first homes that we’ve featured!). The colours are bright and vivid, and really sets the room apart from the rest of the spaces.
    Special thanks to Esther and Suren for taking the time to show us around! For more on their lovely home, please visit: / scandi_kovan

    Perhaps Stacked Homes can consider featuring more lived-in homes (>5-7 years) and ask owners on what they still love about their homes. Afterall, new things often look good from the outside. This can provide some perspective for some of us who intend to renovate/stay for the longer term when deciding between trendy & aesthetic (ie open kitchens) vs more timeless/practical features

    I like how the balcony is an extension of the living area. The balcony’s original form without windows or grills is great. A lot of times, window grills feel like prison. The whole place looks spacious without the kitchen walls.

    Lovely home! Not sure about it being timeless though. The wall mural, macrame and arch wall screams trendy (and trends die out). Perhaps they don't cook much, hence the open kitchen would work.

      So far we've been ok. There's a nice wind running through the house throughout the day. We rarely use the aircon during the day. Our electricity bill is 40% lower than it was when we were staying in a 2-bedroom HDB!

    • @surenrastogi7727
      @surenrastogi7727 Před 2 lety

      We decided not to. What we do is to pull the ziptrak down when we're not home or at night so no insects come into the house. We're high enough that we don't get too many insects anyway. Only at night you'll get a couple of flies who are attracted by the light, but even those aren't many.

    The open shelves behind the living room sofa look like blades. Not very good for the health of those sitting on the sofa. The floral mural behind the bed post may also encourage extra-marital affairs. If one believes in fengshui.
