Tasked with preserving the historical floor plan whilst making it more casual and functional, interior design studio Dax I drew inspiration from the architecture and materials of the building and its surrounds, using a series of rich colours to add a sense of depth and elegance to the space. The fiery red of the entryway sets the tone for the apartment and leads into the combined kitchen and dining area, where a compact but fully equipped all-black kitchen subtly contrasts the dark blue-grey (Inchyra Blue) painted walls. A floating sideboard painted in the same Inchyra Blue provides pantry space for the kitchen whilst a round cherry wood dining table fits perfectly into the small corner of the room. With its delicate balance of modernity and heritage, Dax I’s redesign truly feels at home in its surroundings.

That kitchen sink design is truly coming from the mind of someone that never cooks. Apart from that nice color scheme
Absolutely right, and they have never had a pile of pots and dishes to wash. As for the drying rack, imagine water dripping on your arms as you are doing dishes.

@@KittynFranky7643in Italy there's a drying rack like that in every kitchen, hidden in a cabinet above the sink. Nothings dribbling down as there's something that holds the water underneath the rack. Usually it's even 2 racks on top of each other and really practical
Love that this small home is very different than most featured on this channel with the high ceilings, beautiful wood floors, moldings, and rich colors. It feels very rich and homey. The space looks much bigger than 495 sq. ft.!
Yeah because there is a lot of dead space in the kitchen and living room. They shortchanged the bedroom.
I think there is a perception darker colours will make the rooms smaller so I love seeing designers showing how well bold colours in small spaces can look. The design respects the buildings heritage whilst also being modern, and they have dealt well with the challenge of designing good layouts in rooms that have a lots of angles in them. 10/10 from me!
As someone who grew up in a very colourful house, I would say people are right. The house always felt small and dark to me. I think colourful rooms work only if there are many and very big windows. With my own place, I opted for white with accent walls and colourful decorations. It works just as well!
I do think a lot of people defer to minimalism in the colour chosen when designing for smaller spaces and I'm glad to see it work with bold colours. I like this space a lot!

@@Victoria-oo3iy Perhaps, though since one can't tell just how big and how many windows you need to avoid feeling claustrophobic, I think the colours are also an issue. It's a bit of a gamble to go for them. Plus, you can get sick of them, they can impact your mood... It's a lot better with accent walls. The colours are less aggressive and overwhelming, but you still escape the monotone white/beige/grey walls.
The dark colours only work in the small space because the ceilings and windows are so high.
The flat used to have a gorgeous large bedroom with a balcony, generous sized open living-dining room and a separate kitchen. Now it has a cupboard size bedroom with no storage, a giant hall with cooking equipment in it and a quirky living room separated from the rest of the flat... Very odd spacial planning... The new "kitchen" is only good for reheating shop bought meals, hence the entire space is wasted.

I agree. They ruined a lovely apartment. I say also, what kitchen? A bench with a sink (but as long as it's designer, that's ok.), no storage for food. Obviously no one eats there.

It seems huge! It seamlessly blends all those classical fixtures, modern color schemes, minimalistic functionality, and vintage coziness while keeping it open, elegant and airy!

Under the bed there was a lot of storage... and there was the closet in the foyer for anything that needed to hang.
Some proper closet would have fitted next to the bed actually.
Yeah, if it was my place I would definitely need more storage than that. A LOT more hanging storage. However the way they used the footprint is spare enough that one could probably add in some understated storage furniture if needed, without making the flat feel too cluttered.
(I would also need a bigger drying rack!) I agree that it seems designed for short stays rather than longterm living.

I don’t know where you live, but where I come from this is actually how many apartments are.
this is exactly what I was thinking. Defeats the whole purpose of this channel in my opinion and makes me so mad considering the lack of affordable housing in Berlin (and other cities), airbnb and short term rentals being one of the reasons for it
@@thelazysushi of course, Im not saying you can't live there. However, considering other videos on the channel it lacks sufficient storage space, the kitchen seems tiny and the fridge size???? I mean sure, you can fit somenone there yet will it that make it a good tiny space? I don't know. That's a different conversation.

Nice apartment, and it does look quite large. Though it lacks storage, storage for the kitchen as well as for the bedroom. The kitchen is compact but likely not functional for consistent cooking. True there is a floor to ceiling wardrobe in the entry area as well as under the bed, but it is really limited. Unless the apartment is just for one person who does not cook so often. Also I did not see any proper bookshelves in the living room. It's quite bare and minimal. Likely the style that fit the owner preferences.
I love the lack of too many cupboards full of junk and the minimal amount of stuff on open shelves, etc. This type of area fits my minimalist brain. I can see how it wouldn't work for some. The kitchen would be perfect for me.
its weird that the kitchen is so big (by that apartment's standards) but has a really small empty fridge and no freezer. Either the owner buys their food fresh every single day or they just eat at work and never actually use the kitchen.
I think this is a holiday apartment, that ist rentet out. Like airbnb. This makes me angry because of the lack of housing in Berlin.

To everyone mentioning the small fridge: This is a common size in Europe and I can tell you from my own experience that it works perfectly well. You just can't shop enormous amounts, instead do grocery shopping more than once a week.

exactly. and Bergmannstraße is literally just 2 blocks away, including a supermarket and a market. It is very normal to swing by the supermarket every 2-3 days before coming home from work or running other errands.
Exactly. So many comments about how small appliances and the house are. People need to travel more and see there are other countries than the U.S.
well, I lived in an apartment with a small fridge and it is not practical when you like to cook and freeze for the whole week. So as always, it depends on the owner's preferences.

Finally, a beautiful and cozy space (without an enormous TV and without the morbid charm of a white morgue). Wonderful colors and a balcony. As no walls had to be changed, it is also more affordable. Relaxed, easy living, that's it.
Rest assured, Kreuzberg is not affordable.
Changing walls would have definetely not made a big hole in this persons budget
This is beautiful, I love the combination of colours and materials. I'd love to live in such a well-designed flat. But I am always stunned that there are people out there who live minimalistic and dont't seem to cook or don't need storage and space for lots of books, their hobbys, sports gear, plants and so on - like I do. 🤣
I like so much that the architect respected the architectural elements of the original. The minimalist approach lets those elements shine without dominating. My only concern is a lack of storage -- is there no closet or wardrobe in the bedroom?
Yeah. The wardrobe would be the single feature I would want to add as well. Berlin apartments almost always come with storage space in the basement for the items you only need a few times a year. But for shirts I would definitely want a little bit of hanger space.
As well as no storage in the kitchen area, except for pantry drawers across the room.
And the fridge is tiny. Even I had a supermarket next door, I'd like to triple the fridge.
The thing that’s nice about this space is that it’s very “normal“. Nothing is striving to be hyper-functional, the couch is a couch you would see in a larger home, nothing is over designed like you sometimes see in small spaces.
Yes! There's no built in benches and other stuff that you would only want to use in theory! 😄
tbf, 46sqm is not really "small" for a one/two-person apartment. this is the regular one bedroom size in europe.
It looks bigger than what it is, though, so yes they did well, but it's def an air-bnb
I love the textiles, colours and fabrics. The overall look is beautiful. The kitchen is spacious, and the use of dark colours just works for me. I do have a few quibbles though - the kitchen doesn’t have enough storage space, the sink’s separation from the counter would make doing dishes complicated, and there’s little to no storage space for clothing. I wouldn’t be surprised if this apartment is just a pied-à-terre.

I really like the colors of this apartment. The layout and design was really nice too, definitely feel the coziness of this space. And that choice of ceiling wallpaper for the bedroom was an incredible match with the cornice! Definitely my favorite apartment featured on this channel so far.

As a fan of colours and the not-so minimalistic style, I ADORE this flat so much! The colours, the layout, the personality, the delicate and classical features, the simplicity yet elegance. The flat looks so massive, homey and cosy and has everything you may need for living, it is everything!
Totally agree, I love the colours. Not the smallest of Never Too Small apartments but certainly in my top 10👍🏼
it looks massive until you realise all your possessions and appliances have to fit in one closet and 2 cupboards.
For me to live here I'd need a bigger fridge, a door to the bedroom, black-out curtains in the bedroom nook, a proper size closet for my clothes, a proper bookshelf and a different design of bathroom tiles; and plants. But for a temporary place, which I think it might be, (like air b&b) it is quite ok.
Not everyone is obsessed with closets and clutter. One could add furniture for your clothes. A bigger fridge would be overkill for a small apartment for one person. I like its low key not over designed ambiance and lack of godawful scatter cushions and other over used ‘home furnishings’ which serve no functional purpose.
Give the colour consultant a raise, they made an outstanding job. The wallpaper on the ceiling is really a smart idea. I just have mixed feelings about the kitchen sink about its functionality.

2 or 3 places where there is room for clothes...not everyone is a hoarder...
I LOVE the use if colour here. So many spaces on NTS stick to white to create light. This space is so luxurious and rich because of the well chosen colors .
Lovely to finally see a classic European/vintage decor on this series! It is gorgeous. Congrats to the designer. However, from my European perspective, I think the appartment has a perfectly fine size. 😅.

I love the design of this apartment but would need more kitchen storage. I would add enclosed cabinets above the kitchen work space to the ceiling. If painted the same color as the walls it would blend in nicely. It’s a beautiful apartment.
Respectfully, an architect is so not a designer(!). Love this, but not including the garish hall colour. To me, another one of the caveats is the distance between the built in dish dry mat and the actual sink.
I do like the turquoise-gray in the main room which has quite a nice compact design. Some of the rooms felt a bit blank compared to the others. I do quite like the stunning wallpaper + moulding on the one room’s ceiling. Will try watching this again. Thanks.

One of my favorites from this channel. I really appreciate the "gentle" approach that the designer describes, and how respectful the update feels towards the heritage of the building while still feeling fresh, clean, and beautiful. 10/10!
Truly beautiful. I personally would need more storage but that's just me and could be fixed easily. Love the way they used bold colors and the painted furniture. Also lovely how they kept the feel of the area alive
What a beautiful, open, restful space. I love the preservation of original details, and I see why the designer describes her style as gentle. I also really appreciate that she shared the names of the paint colors-- the color choices in this space are magnificent.

I really love the colours in this apartment. They seem very restful. The architectural features also enhance the apartment. It is bright cheerful and cosy all at the same time day or night.
overall the apartment is vey nice. the only thing I would change is the colour of the hallway which I find too intense. A colour for the hallway for me would be a calm colour that says ‘I’m home’. Also I am not a fan of beds against walls unless it’s a kids’ room or perhaps a single person, for a couple it is not comfortable. And last but not least, where is the clothes storage? This looks more like a pied à terre in Berlin for short stays and the owner owns a bigger home elsewhere
Would be a very big pied à terre for berlin tho. The flats here are very small, I'd be so annoyed if this was the case, since most of us are fighting for each square meter. 😆 I agree with you tho!
Until now, I've found every NTS episode worthwhile. I'm going to tell myself this designer's clients were a pair of colorblind Labradors who told her "Anything goes!" 😂
Lovely colors and feel to the space. I like the use of draperies to warm up a space. Agree with the other comments that it appears to lack storage unless there’s some that wasn’t highlighted.

That refrigerator and kitchen are really small! I hope it was done because the client does very light cooking and not because the kitchen looked better with everything shrunk below the counter. Either way, I would consider downsizing to a micro dishwasher to add more storage space.

@@chloeuntrau4588 Even if you live alone, you might have a date come over or host some friends. And you might want freezer space for frozen meals when you don't want to cook for yourself.
We mostly have this kind of refrigerators in Germany. To be honest I had and still have one and I can tell you years ago we were six people ! within our householt. I cooked at least one warm meal every day with resh products . But I had a freezer the same size as well. I know Germans are weird people.

I’ve lived in London for almost 3 years with this type of fridge. Food here goes bad much quicker and I have 3 grocery stores within a 5 minute walk. So I always pick up stuff on the way home. It’s how it’s done. So the American style fridges would be too big
I like that there are separate rooms, although I imagine that they are all quite small.

The apartment itself is beautiful and the colours that the designer chose were striking. There’s just not enough storage. A single person could somewhat manage but even then it’s a stretch. Where does one put the broom and the mop?

Some people miss the fact that if you live in a small space, you have to downsize your belongings, too. There is plenty of storage if you only keep what you truly need (and only you know what that is for you). A week or two worth of clothes (maybe and extra week or two of off-season clothes), a couple of coats/jackets, couple pairs of shoes. In the bathroom, just the basics. In the kitchen 4-6 plates, bowls, and silverware settings, a couple of pans/pots, and food storage containers. I only have about 30 books in my house and those are mostly recent purchases. I use the library a lot or buy used books that I pass on to neighbors or thrift stores when I'm done. I have a pretty big fridge, but if mine were smaller, I'd be stricter in what I could have in the kitchen. Prioritize what you need for your lifestyle and live in a place that fits that lifestyle.
Disagree. This is a very decently sized flat and sure, if you wanna be minimalistic go for it, but noone should have to live like that. It's a beautiful flat but there's more than enough space to add more storage

I love this version of minimalism! There is still colour and each room feels different, but it is very simple and there is nothing extra - only the essentials.

You can see the experience and brilliance of the designer shining through this flat. Sure the use of colours were highlights but i personally could not escape the small design details that were so well placed and considered. I loved how well-integrated the drying rack was in the floating shelf and the intentional placing of the lights to fuction as accent and provide adequate illumination. I took notes for my own renovation.

That kitchen is so elegantly designed it doesn't look like one! It looks more like a lounge/reception area and one would easily be able to relax in that space without feeling like one is in the kitchen. I imagine if the living room needed to be converted to another bedroom, the kitchen/dining space would function pretty well as a kitchen/dining/living space too, albeit a little small. 😍

Absolutely stunning. The colors work well because of the abundance of lighting and the light fixtures and complemented by furniture that are modern, unique and has its own flair.

It's a beautiful apartment. I'm not always a huge fan of bold or dark wall colours (although they are growing on me) since lighter paint colours make apartments seem much more open, airy, and spacious, but luckily, the floors are a beautiful light wood tone and the ceilings, window frames, door frames, and doors are white, so they offset the potential heaviness of those darker colours.
Plus, those dark colours do add a certain sense of history and luxury to the space.

An architect and designer's job is made easier when a space already has great bones, which this home does. The FLOORS. The floors are GLORIOUS. And the molding is amazing! So beautiful! And the windows! The high ceilings and wide doorways! I wish people still built homes like this. The space has this richness and warmth to it due to all of the high-quality original details.
I love the use of colors and vintage furniture items, and the long draperies in the windows. The kitchen is lovely and spacious with adequate storage. I was completely on board with everything and loved it all...until the bathroom. It's a good layout, and the storage and laundry units are great, but I have seen far too many homes with dated pink bathrooms in them to ever want to see one again. It's also a really insipid pink, like the color of Pepto Bismol, and I will admit freely that I hate it.
There are a lot of homes on this channel that I admire but wouldn't want to live in. This is a home I would love to live in. Minus the bathroom. Replace the pink tiles with a fresh white to complement the lovely flooring, and I would be on board 100%.

A good solution for a minimalist design while retaining an old world feel that the the client clearly favours. For me, I would prefer another solution for the kitchen food preparation with an exhausted/filtered system above the cooking range. 🖤

You are like entering a different world when you go to the different parts of the house. I loved the color scheme.
The color pallet is amazing!
The color/tone choices - especially for the entryway, central dining , and living rooms - are very beautiful, sophisticated, serene. There are elements in the bedroom , as well as the bath, that carry that seem theme, and are clever . For the subtlest reasons, however, I found the bedroom wanting, chilly, and wished for a little more "embrace," softness, gravity, luxury. Perhaps it was the color chosen for that space, or the white, more generic-looking platform that held the bed? Not sure. All and all, the physical apartment has handsome bones , and the design choices within - wonderful and informed.
I agree. I liked the use of color overall in this apartment, but the colder blue used in the bedroom clashed with the beautiful, warm blue used in the adjacent kitchen. I think the bedroom definitely could use a more complementary color. Also, while the wallpaper on the ceiling is clever and kind of fun with the old molding, I don't think looking up at the ceiling last thing before bed, and first thing in the morning would be ideal for me in terms of calming and destressing my mind.

I used to live in an apartment just like this by bergmannstrasse in 2004 / 05 😮 except with the kitchen in the old style, ie in a small room. And a small fridge. 220 euros cold rent. Which would probably get you a few nights in an airbnb now.

I enjoyed this episode. There were no design studies and nothing over the top and at the same time I feel inspired. Interesting to see well applied color drenching and how they hid the kitchen in plain sight. I also liked the blue color in the bedroom, the black kitchen sink and the handles in the bathroom.
