This week, we tour a 37 year old resale HDB at Joo Seng that has been wonderfully transformed into an open and airy space for home owners Peng and Joey. Straying from the norm, they've always gravitated towards a resale HDB because they prioritised bigger living spaces. And so with this home at 1,453 square feet, you can really feel the difference the minute you walk into their living room.
So with that space, they were able to fit in a long 2.4m dining table from Crate and Barrel - which was so big that it couldn't fit into the lift and had to be carried up 18 stories! What we really like too is the open seamless balcony - it's a lovely space to sit and relax and watch the day go by.

Nice and spacious la. Old flats have more character but sometimes can hv structural problems due to the age like water seepage and spalling. The dog is so cute 🤩

Ah...the spacious balcony is so dreamy that I almost wanted to cry looking at my narrow one...hahahahaha

😂😂😂 Rest assured there is no perfect home. It could always be better!
Congrats to them for living in the moment & putting happiness first & foremost. I believe they would have alternative investments to meet their future needs & goals etc. However, if they shall need to sell in the next decade or so, they might need to take a loss to move on. Because in this modern era, especially for the younger generation, u hardly see them staying put in a home beyond 15yrs.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Yes for an old property, the younger generation might find its age unappealing. They would also be thinking what would happen to the flat if they sell it next time? Older folks who want to downgrade may not consider such a big space, and could better utilise their cash for retirement by going for a smaller flat. Old flats would also have its limitations when it comes to CPF usage for young buyers, so this is something to be cautious about.

They don't build these flats anymore. HDB keeps pushing for the BTO crap. Less space and more expensive.
Thanks for sharing! In some sense, it's like new launches. Back when prices were affordable, the HDB could afford to build big. Today if the HDB builds this size, it becomes out of reach for many, or become insanely expensive in the resale market - not something the HDB would like 👀

1400+ sqft is not small... Especially when the layout makes use of the space so well

The problem with old HDBs is the kitchen in the bathroom. I entertain a lot and my children have a lot more privacy with the common bathroom near their bedrooms.

There are some older HDBs (20 years or so) with bathrooms along the corridor.
This is better than paying 10m for an apartment in Orchard and not be able to open the windows or blind due to close proximity of the apartment besides.

YOU CAN REMOVE WINDOWS ON HDB?? I thought cannot??
Because that's the balcony so the original HDB design didn't include windows for it anyway.
This property makes me feel very dark and cramped due to the insufficient lighting, choice of wood color. Furthermore seems like there is no theme to the design except the "feature" wooden wall...
