My 5-room HDB Home Renovation and Makeover!

- This project was close to 7 months in the making. The pandemic gave me time to give my place a much needed facelift after 25 years of living in it. It was such a huge challenge to get rid of the accumulated family junk, finalise on the designs, find the right furniture/materials/accessories, and iron through the many hiccups during the home renovation journey.

Hi, Shawne. Thanks for sharing your renovation journey. Your home looks great after the renovation. How do you declutter your home before renovation? Any tips you can share? May I know why you chose TipTop movers? Are they good? Where do you store your bulky items like furniture that you want to keep? Where did you stay during the renovation? Hope you don't mind sharing.
It’s a pleasure. For decluttering, the renovation date was a HUGE push factor for us to clear all the unwanted stuff as quickly as possible. If you’re not using it for the past 2 years or more, it’s probably useless.
We found tiptop movers on google and saw that they had good reviews. Overall, they’re very snappy and efficient during the moving process.
We did not keep any bulky items, everything was in need for a refresh. I stayed at my brother’s place which was empty at the time thankfully.

Look at the wall behind you in the bedroom, the downlight reveals the wall’s defect. That’s very basic defect that I professional contractor should not ignore .

Every home can look good without all the clutter
that's why I declutter every month. so it wont build up
What did the so called interior designer do? If I engage one I would do so because of their artistic sense and the style they deliver. I expect them to do everything and make all the choices, furnish and accessories it - not leave it to me. Why pay someone only to then do their job for them?
That was what I was expecting as well when I just started on this. But IDs generally:
- come up with the overall design (carpentry, flooring, mood board)
- project manage with the contracters, making sure all goes to plan (the most important role) and basically be a middleman if there are any issues.
Decorative items, furniture and accessories are highly subjective and they can only provide recommendations. For a first timer like myself, it’s absolutely crucial for have a middle man as there will be issues along the way, and I have no idea on how to do up floor plan.
I wish someone could make all the decisions for me but that’s not how it works unfortunately.

Believe me, it was tough as hell. Took me loads of convincing over a long period, main reason as a better living environment for the entire family, and constantly ensuring that things would be taken care of
