I know that here in the UK, it has been found that the "organic" labelled food is very often found to contain the same pesticides as non organic. Life is a mine field these days, and those of us who choose to live healthily are made to pay more. It really points to being punished for trying to stand apart from their programs of population control. I can only urge all to grow your own. That way we can step away from our dependency on the system and take sovereignty back into our own hands. Love all. 🙏

I've been using the baking soda trick for a few years now! As a grad student, 100% organic isn't feasible always but I do my best. In the summer almost all my produce is either foraged or from local farms (which even if they aren't certified organic use organic practices) but in the winter its a bit harder. I do always buy organic soy products, but with grains, nuts and legumes less so. This was a good reminder of the importance of organic practices all around. thanks!

There is a lotttttttttttt to be said for companion planting to protect your food & the bottom line is this, time to go to the "old ways", "Grow Your Own Food", know what your eating & grow what you eat. Get involved in community gardens for food, network. The world is already hinting to not depend anymore on stores, nope, depend on yourself, we have become too lazy. Grow sprouts on your window sill use tower pots "normally used for strawberries" but stick lettuce in there, put up green houses & use filtered rain water.... Break the addiction to store bought food, you can grow on a patio or balcony in a block of flats, get permission to grow on the rooves of buildings because dear hearts, life as we knew it is going going so before it's gone, set up growing your own food. Love your channel btw, i don't often comment but this is important & rally farmers to stop destroying top soil. ≧◠‿◠≦✌Peace

Great video Derek. Thank you doing this! I just wanted to add that glyphosate isn’t used in all countries and so isn’t a worry for everyone. I believe its use is banned/limited in some EU countries and Mexico has a plan to phase it out in the next couple of years.
Also - a great way to buy organic produce and support local farmers is to check out CSA options in your area. Can work out a little cheaper than buying from grocery stores, plus it's much fresher.
I've read that glyphosate may be the reason why so many people are celiac or gluten intolerant too. It's not the gluten that is harming people - it's the glyphosate. It's such evil stuff.

The overspray issue is kinda overstated... to get approved as organic, you need to be a certain distance from sprayed crops. It is 8 meters to 3 km depending on the crop and conditions (for Canada.) I'm sure there could still be some contamination from, groundwater or overspray on an extra windy day, but it's gotta be a lot better than direct spray.

Hi Derek! Thank you so much for doing this video - I'm right there with you!! I've been an organic proponent for 30 years. My family thinks I'm a little crazy, but I feel this is extremely important. I have a small, organic vegetable, herb, and flower garden. Glyphosate is so bad. I know someone who sprayed their yard with Roundup. Two days later, he was mowing his yard, in sandals, and he didn't realize he had a tiny cut on his toe. He ended up in the emergency room because his toe started swelling up really badly and he was feeling really sick. When the hospital was trying to figure out what might be wrong, they initially felt he had been poisoned with something (which he really was), this was the only thing he could remember that might be relevant. And, it was! Thank you for all you do. Love your channel, and thank you, again, for this important video.

Also worth considering which foods are cleaned more easily, removing more pesticides. Like an apple is easier to remove pest. residue compared to kale regardless of amount applied during growth. And I don’t see it as bashing farmers but more showing care for them too since they actually get higher doses of these chemicals than any consumers would. Cost does factor into choosing which foods to buy organic so it’s nice you talk about which ones can have the biggest impact to our health. Although even if the organic produce is prohibitively expensive it’s probably still better to get the regular kale over skipping entirely!

i had a question about this, i’ve seen some videos on tiktok about some farmers saying that the pesticides are fine and people are dumb for buying organic etc etc. since you’ve worked in the fields, why would you think some farmers are opposed to organic? i’ve done my fair share of research and i’d rather still buy organic since it’s better for the soil, better for the people since i would hate to be smelling and being around pesticides all day, and i know organic carries more phytonutrients than conventional.

@@Mylkygoddess but that’s on tik tok…..not very reliable but I think farmers would think that because they feel like they need to be prideful of using pesticides because it’s old school or maybe they can’t afford to go organic or they just deny the effects straight up or they are sponsored by round up/mansantos

If I had to guess farming organically would be much more complex, costly, and time consuming. We are harvesting wheat right now. Truck after truck we haul to the elevators where it is sold as a commodity. Easy for the farmers because that's the traditional system. Subsidies could also be a concern. These are all just guesses as I am talking above my pay grade.

Thanks for doing this video. My family / friends always bring up the fact that organic foods cost so much more, however the health benefits outweigh the cost. While I spend a bit more for organic, they are spending substantially more than that on medical bills.
Not only did I appreciate the information, but also the humor. It is quite alarming what is allowed to enter our food chain.

yes, especially in the US. So many foods and ingredients are banned in other countries but not here. Even though a lot of foods that we eat, think red 40 and titanium dioxide, are in our food yet banned in others.

I definitely support organics. Compared to civilized areas of the usa, they are not nearly as plentiful in the UK, France Croatia.... where I've been so far lately. I was in S. France in an ag area. Smog hung over the entire area and we were aware of air quality thru apps. When neighboring fields were sprayed my right lung that has some damage actually ached and my digestion changed. I left the area and everything improved. That said I've found my way and really appreciating experiencing new places.

I so agree with you derick,we all survived many years ago when no pestering was being used,it's greed that promotes pestering use and the gmo they do now which hate but we will never truly get rid of it, because if an organic 20 acre farm is next to a farm that sprays then the organic farm will get the rain run off so will it truly be organic,I love your vids keep them coming

funny how things/perceptions change over time, about a decade or so ago my view of organic food was of it being pretentiously trendy & elitist but now it's an absolute necessity for good health. The impact of pesticide exposure on gut & microbiome health is now an obvious root cause on all sorts of auto-immune disorders that plague ever increasing amounts of the population nowadays.... Great video 🙏

We have a modest sized urban backyard and we are growing our own vegetables and fruit…it’s work, but it’s definitely a safer alternative. One suggestion though. Some small scale farmers at your local farmers markets likely doesn’t have the ability to certify their products as organic. Ask them and they’ll let you know if they spray their product. Many don’t.

I usually try to buy as much organic as possible but since the huge increase in inflation & cost of living here in the UK it is getting more and more difficult. I often wonder if I am just wasting my money on expensive foods I can’t really afford, but reading your comment (and others like it) bolsters me to carry on and reassures me that I’m doing the right thing. :)

I came from a third generation local Farm family. And a lot of times farmers were so busy they couldn't do heavy research into organic methods plus the banks oftentimes only gave us the option of keeping up with the Joneses who were out producing us temporarily at least with heavily pesticided herbicided and fertilized crops. One neighbor of ours said if he was more profitable with the benefit of a million dollar loan to use industrialized methods while we couldn't get a loan to do organic techniques. I know in the Southeast a lot of pork producers are enslaved because of contracts they signed to pork corporations. Your voting with your dollars is desperately more important than you appreciate.

Prefacing what I'm about to say, I'm a long time fan, but I'm also in the STEM field. I'm going to look like a bad guy here and I'm not calling him out, but it's really important to differentiate correlation versus causation, even when the evidence looks really convincing. I also saw that he wore that tin hat, but I still think this is worth addressing directly for people who don't keep this "top of mind".
EDIT: Regardless, I couldn't agree more that organic is usually better. There is so much garbage on and in the food we eat on a daily basis.
