Mini Motorways Part 1 - a "new" game from the makers of Mini Metro! This just released on Steam, and boy is it a blast. The skill cap for this game seems much higher than Mini Metro, so I will enjoy improving at it! Stay tuned for future episodes.

In the previous version on iPhone, motorways cost an amount of road tiles equal to their length. The fact that they no longer cost road tiles is a huge change and a welcome one. Steam users will never know the struggle of “motorway cannot be that long”.

This actually seems way more polished than mini metros.
The point of mini metro is that it looks like a metro map and the point of this one is that it looks like a roadway map

then is used to connect things in time, "x happened then y happened"

It was an apple arcade exclusive for nearly two years. The game's exclusivity expired recently so it released on Steam, but it continues to be exclusive on mobile and will be for probably a few more years. Unfortunately it'll be some time before it releases on Android.
Actually scratch that, it looks like it will _never_ be releasing on Android. Shame

Btw, you don’t need to connect every house to your roadway like you did with shapes in mini metro. If there are houses that are way out of the way that will only cause traffic you can just leave them unconnected to maximize roadway efficiency.
I tried that today but I felt bad for them and connected them to… dead end road 😂
One important hint:
If you can build diagonals, do it, it's more road efficient

I feel like putting the ends of highways on intersections contributes to congestion a lot. You go from 4 roads to an intersection to 5.

One tip is to avoid 4-way intersections including with houses as cars will come to a stop at these, lengthening the time it takes for a car to reach its destination. Is is also faster for a car to leave its house at an angle towards its destination than a house making a T intersection

Roundabouts are really good. You can connect roads to them diagonally too, so you can have an 8-way intersection that’s still more efficient than a normal 4-way one. Saves a lot of merging streets together.

This is the only reason I watch him, I find it entertaining that he understands complicated stuff that I don’t.
Color go to color and alarm bad
Can you have some kind of indicator to alert us to the specific area you're talking about when you say "this one"? It's hard to see where your mouse is. Maybe a big cursor? In some OS's you can shake the mouse a bunch to make the cursor larger.
Windows has a setting where pressing Ctrl causes a circle to home into the cursor
I feel like traffic lights might be usefull in certain situation. Ex. You could use it as a kind of switch between 2 neighborhoods of different colors. You'd have a couple blue cars, then a couple red cars all going to the same place. In a more chaotic scenarios, you'd be just better with roundabouts or simple intersection
Unfortunately the consensus from the high score mini motorway community is that traffic lights are literally useless. An open intersection will do a better job at flowing traffic than traffic lights do. Traffic lights can stop large quantities of cars even when no other cars are coming.
Roundabouts on the other hand are quite good
@@CodedGames Yeah, the car AI is better at traversing roads than actual drivers who can't communicate with one another so the point of traffic lights ends up being quite moot in the game.

@@ThaGamingMisfit It's not truly useless. The traffic lights are not the most "efficient," but they help when you have an intersection with crossing flows.
Going for pure efficiency, you do not let flows cross, you have bypasses, loops, and motorways to keep all the lines of flow mostly separate. Especially for newer players, it can be difficult to sperate the major flows, and this can make congestion that can be helped with a light.
I've seen that if you get about 10 cars on all sides of an intersection all backed-up, a traffic light will drop the lines down by half. This will also help free up more space on the road, opening other intersections or just space for speed.

Ive really got to be honest, Aliensrock is one of the only CZcamsrs that seems both professional and really new at the same time, I'm not sure how, but he just is.
You can use 1 2 3 keys to quickly set your speed, and Space to toggle pause!
Just finished the video, and holy crap! I could see this being big! I really really enjoyed this video. Watching you optimize something is very satisfying, as you see lots of optimizations I didn't notice, and I, as a viewer, can see things that I would have done differently. It provides an interesting gameplay-commentary-viewer experience that feels very connected and involved on my end, as I try to find optimizations before you. It feels like watching an older sibling play a game, and they see things you don't, and you see things they don't. Ben did a great job on the editing, as usual, and you, Tyler, did a great job playing, and commentating. This game feels perfect for streaming, due to that older sibling type deal. Good stuff:):) 10/10 video

Ok I might be wrong but the traffic lights do slow down the roads but if you put them at a intersection that is congested it actually slightly speeds it up
I feel like there could be a high level strat where you never keep any roads banked. You could deploy all your roads in certain places to try and control the spawn locations of new buildings
I watched a good few videos on mini motorway and this guy somehow got the best score despite only have one roundabout for traffic control
Traffic lights are super good, but super hard to use. Every piece has their quirks, it just depends where you put them. Having 2 on hand is super handy, especially for busy crossroads. Your light was poorly placed, like a blunder, but on your layout deleting it was smart. I enjoyed the video c:

this was the best game on apple arcade. i remember there was a strategy where you strategically place roads in order to block bad spawning positons.
ha I was wondering if that could be done while watching the video, but it seems like you'd need a huge brain to pull it off without screwing yourself by making things spawn farther away
@@L4Vo5 I think the main strat was to create roads bordering your buildings so that buildings didn’t spawn right next to each other. Giving room for the roads to go in between them.

Traffic lights plus intersections are good
You can also put roads around the entrance to the workplaces to prevent more from spawning right next to each other
Trust me: having an interconnected road network makes the game a lot easier than making separate networks for different colors.
We need more of this
You can put little diagonal road dashes (not attached to anything) in open areas to keep thing from spawning in places you don't want

so tyler, a tip from someone who played this a lot on apple arcade before a lot of the QoL stuff was added (roundabouts, motorways not using roads, 10 roads per week, etc.), grids are your friend
the more squares, the easier it is to use traffic lights to manage traffic since they do follow stopping rules. where they stop before turning if they see another car coming (also squares tend to just be optimal for traffic)

12:23 Instead of connecting the highway to the intersection, it'd probably be better to hook it onto the roundabout right below it, instead of the road coming from the left. Should help keep the traffic flowing better.

A nice reference to this game's New Zealander creators, the motorway symbol looks quite similar to the Kiwi one, apart from the fact that the NZ version is completely red.
This is such a good game
Small tip from a bad player: I find that creating neighborhoods help ease traffic, a bunch of driveways on critical roads slows traffic down, even when cars are not coming and going. Even if it costs more roads, having neighborhoods with one intersection to access the main road is better than a bunch of single-point connections.

i feel like this game, in changing how you delete paths, really changes the gameplay
in mini metro, you can easily delete every metro line at once so it's really easy to redo everything and make it all better
but here, by making it so that you can only delete one road at a time, it forces you to be more additive than subtractive (but the road limit adds a good road optimization incentive)
It is worse than that, in mini metro you can re-assign stuff immediately. here the ghost placements still cost resources till nothing is on them and they are either made redundant or the last vehicle planning to use them has done so. So you will lose before you manage any complete restructuring, unless you miraculously have enough resources in the bank to rebuild from scratch. This game has way more inertia.
Fun fact: Connecting houses to businesses are not required. If you have enough people to occupy a building, you can ignore newly spawned houses.
It was a bit hard to follow your thoughts since I couldn’t see the mouse very well on the bright play area. Otherwise, good video!
