Lake Tekapo - New Zealand

- Lake Tekapo is an incredible place to visit. It's located on the South Island of New Zealand, and is surrounded by amazing mountainous landscapes. It's also part of the gold level status Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, which means it has some of the darkest night skies in the world, and is a perfect place for stargazing and to see our own Milky Way Galaxy.
Each year I travel to Lake Tekapo to explore the area and find new and interesting locations to photograph and time-lapse, and this short film is a collection of some of my favourite time-lapses from the area.
A big thanks goes out to Earth and Sky and the University of Canterbury Mt John Observatory for allowing me access to Mount John at night.
New zealand is heaven.
River new zealand’s a different planet

Unreal😵
i cant believe such a night sky like that really exist omg..
Sure does. It’s everywhere, the only thing stopping you from seeing it is.. light pollution.
I met with a friend of yours during our company's Christmas party here in Auckland - he told me all about you and my word; you're shots/videos are stunning. I hope to meet you personally when I come to Wellington! Teach me your ways Mark!
Awesome Kevin - do you know his name?
Mark Gee Ian Bowyer :) dunno if you remember him
Heaven
I wish i'll be there
太美了!天气好时 能否 肉眼看到 银河?
So this is what bts saw 😭😭😭🧍🏻♀️i bet im not the only one searched this
Wow! So do you suggest spending one night in lake tekapo ?
May be fly drone whole day for the nice footages and then night for milky way timelapse
Soumendra Jena worth spending a night there but unfortunately there’s not many places you can fly a drone there due to the proximity of the airport and lots of doc and private land. Check www.airshare.co.nz for details of flying in New Zealand 😊
Mark Gee ok cool..I hope no issues flying during the road trip, of course not the national parks. And about the dark sky milky way timelapses, you suggest tekapo ?
Soumendra Jena Tekapo or Mount Cook which is about 50 minutes drive from Tekapo.
Mark Gee ok great. I'm staying 1 night in tekapo and 2 nights in cook village
Im at Mt.Cook today. I dont see anything. Its all dark sky.
Hi! Really love your video. Can you please share what’s the BGM’s name?
the sky looks amazing! is it okay for you if I use a few seconds of your footage in my own video? I would also mention you.
Ok, I'm so confised
Is this an edit or we can still see the sky like this at night in some places?
The camera does capture more colour and detail than the human eye can see, however you can still clearly see the details in the Milky Way at these locations.
@@MarkGee wooow that's awesome!! I dont think i have ever seen more than five stars in the sky. I'm adding that place to my list of places to visit
Hi, if you're still reading comments, when did you go and which guide service did you choose?
Thank you for your hard work in making the video. I enjoyed the good video. Have a happy day.
Hey Mark this looks absolutely amazing. Would it be okay if I use a few snippets of your footage in a video? Ill give you credit?
He never said yes haha
너무 그립다ㅠㅠ
I’m half newzealend half Hungarian half Australian I’m mostly newzeland I love newzeland
hello is it me youre looking for ty :D
Clearly not very good at maths though ;-)
Lofoten island Norway and New Zealand the best place for me :( wish I could travel there before I die but yeah I guess I can't
Mark Gee Does it again
Hey there! I'm going to the Dark Sky Reserve in about a month. Can I pretty much drive wherever, pull off to the side of the road, and then get a good view for stargazing?
machajohn yes you’re not restricted to any specific locations, I just wouldn’t pull off on the actual highway, but there are plenty of roads you can go down off that and find great locations.
@@MarkGee Ah yes, I suspect being on the highway isn't ideal if people are going to be traveling down it. Would you say the roads that lead to great, quieter locations are easy to find or would I need more local knowledge?
machajohn not too hard to find - the road that goes down the eastern side of Lake Tekapo is great with miles of potential locations. Just follow the round hill ski field signs. And if you head into Mount Cook, the road that takes you to the Tasman Valley is amazing at night. Just do your location scouting in the daytime, as it’s really dark out there at night.
@@MarkGee Duly noted and much appreciated! Thank you!
saw bts visiting it in bv season 4 i wanna visit this place too
Breathtaking. I'm visiting New Zealand for the first time in May and plan to close out with a stay under the Dark Sky Reserve. Would you recommend staying at the Lake?
hazeej yes Lake Tekapo is an iconic location in the Dark Sky Reserve so I totally recommend it.
Dark sky reserve is a specific place or basically whole lake tekapo area is called as dark sky area ?
The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve encompasses Lake Tekapo--Lake Tekapo is sort of in the middle of it. Here's an image showing a map of it: s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/constellationonline.net/media/UrbanAstronomer/Dark-Sky-Map_AorakiMackenzieIDSR.jpg
hazeej so do I need to contact someone to get me access or I can simply stay at some motel in lake tekapo and then go out in night and film the stars ?
Yup, you can just go. It's just an area designated for low-light pollution--no fences or anything. There are little towns throughout the area, or you can rent a camper van and camp out, which I hear is common for tourists traveling through New Zealand.
do u see all this with the naked eye or just through camera?
Mesut Ramsey it's visible to the naked eye, but just not with the clarity that you see here as the camera does capture more detail.
Is it for real or camera effects?
All real, just a time-lapse sped up.
Keren
thanks for that mark I have been watching CZcams and the sightings of ufos and following the flat earth stuff and alien contacts and cover ups very interesting to see what Antarctic is hiding and the the middle earth theory has to unravel you have amazing stories and pictures of stars in the sky thanks for your work and sharing, much appreciated...
What is the Name of the Song?
Hi there, I emailed you about using about 15 seconds of this footage in a video I'm making. Hoping to hear from you so I can post it.Thanks
Could I post this video on my SNS(Korea's kakao story app)?
Julia Baek sure go for it.
Do you know bts?? I mean are you a fan of them?
does this happen every night?
As long as it's not cloudy yes.
And is best on a moonless night.
what is the music title?
I just saw a satellite travel by Orion s shoulder down to his front leg then a bright blue flash of light appeared for a second then disappeared not sure what it was but surely those watching it would have seen it not that we would be told what it was...
Jack Smith you most likely saw an iridium flare: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite_flare#Iridium_flares
1:10 is there a reason why everyone was using those flashlights? do they help to see the stars more clearly?
No it was an astrophotography workshop, so people were using their lights to see what they were doing with their cameras. They were only on momentarily and the red light doesn't cause you to loose your night vision.
@@MarkGee oh cool. Nice shots btw
Is it true?

The stars and milky-way are photoshoped, impossible to see that far object from Earth so clearly and bright.
Nordmarian you obviously have no idea what a modern day camera with a long exposure can capture. And besides you can’t photoshop video...

I'd be happy to license the video to you - you can contact me on info@theartofnight dot com if interested.
I just wish that I could find a film about New Zealand without awful background "music". What possible purpose does it serve? I can think only that the posters are so embarrassed with the film content that they have to add something to draw the viewers attention away from the film itself.
