  • Robert had terrible pain and cramping in his calf after knee surgery. Very often the trauma of an orthopedic surgery can cause nerve damage. Rober's daughter Deborah had surgery with Dr. Tollestrup so she recommended him to her dad. Dr. Tollestrup has treated many family members. Watch what he did for Robert.

My daughter had come to Dr. Tollestrup with some problems in her leg a year ago. And she suggested that maybe I see him to see if we can do anything.
A lot of orthopedic surgery is done very close to peripheral nerves and orthopedic trauma and even orthopedic surgery. Things like joint replacements are a little bit rough by their nature. If you have to replace a joint or fix a bone or the trauma that goes into causing some of these orthopedic injuries in the first place can often injure the peripheral nerve at the same time.
I hobbled in one morning and walked out immediately after, without any severe after effects at all. No more leg cramps, no more pain in the back of the knee. It was really severe at one time, but that is long since gone. Very satisfied with things.
It's very common actually for me to be in the examination room with a patient who's been brought there by a spouse or a son or a daughter, what have you, and for the person who's just sitting there passively to pipe up and say, "You know, I've got this pain." Or "I know somebody who's got this pain." So my mantra is that everyone either has a peripheral nerve problem or know somebody with a peripheral nerve problem.
And that may be overstated a little bit, but it's not too exaggerated because literally if you think about, who you know, your circle of friends, especially if you're older than 40, the odds are very high that if you have a chronic pain problem that hasn't been solved, you have a peripheral nerve problem. Or, you know somebody who's dealing with a severe chronic pain problem, that's likely to be peripheral nerve.

I had TKR 9 months ago and had a pretty good recovery as I was in pretty good shape physically before this. Compared to others I may be doing great but am not back to where I was...can't completely squat with full knee bend so getting up off the floor (after yoga) is still awkward. Still feeling the odd sensation of having an elastic band around my calf at times, and the biggest issue is the pain behind my knee and to the outside edge that in a certain position is highly and suddenly very painful. If I lay on my back with my legs up 90 degree bend and start to let them fall into a deeper bend as I relax them I am jolted by the pain in this area on the repaired knee. Is this something you can help? Can you recommend anything I can use to guide my current ortho into helping me fix this? Thank you so much!!

I have had multiple surgeries first starting from a severe break also several for infections ending in a total knee replacement. I have had a stabbing pain in the inner part of the knee where there is a nerve cluster and extreme tightness in the calf muscle. I work out in the gym four times a week upper body and some leg training light leg press leg extensions and inner thighs glutes and those back leg muscles not really been doing calf training because of concern of hurting it making it worse I have been on multiple medications with little to no effect I am desperate to find what to do doctors I have seen haven't been very helpful 😢. Losing hope here 💔

I am experiencing the same thing. It’s like a sharp electrical squeeze just beliw the joint like there is a band squeezing and sending electrical shock. Then when I stand up straight from the left side of my groin with activate a nerve bundle that spiders out and up my shin bone that is so hot, sharp and intense I cry out.
