- This is my Land Rover Discovery Series II TD5. It's guzzles diesel like you wouldn't believe and leaves me with no spare cash at the end of every month. Despite that I love it, and in this video I'll tell you why.

Man you are just the best youtuber because you're so authentic, you showcase the things that the people can afford and live accordingly. You're the only youtuber i know that would do a car review and while taking to the camera while driving the car have bird shit on the window right next your face, and i find that fantastic as it happens to everyone. You don't own a Land Rover, they become part of the family, that's why you can't bear to part with it! I have two (mine and the wife's) Mine is 2002 V8 Auto, and remember re: reliability, these things are rarely pampered, more usually abused, and the Discovery 2 can be as old as 20 years old now. How many 1998 model cars are still on the road in the UK without some sort of maintenance? Also, that hook on the passenger transmission tunnel - that is affectionately known as the Chinese Takeaway hook :-) - just watch out for rust in the rear chassis on these if you have to deal with snow and salted roads.

Got one of each model - the wife's Td5 is actually lower spec than yours, 5 seats, cloth, no sunroof, no wheel arch flares - mine is a premium one with all the goodies but rear air bags were converted to coils before I bought it. Plus a few mods: 1drv.ms/u/s!AiSPsJSD7WXnlOsR-GRRoOsF8_ttYw

we use ours for rubbish bags my dad got annoyed with the airbags and switched them to coils hes also spent ages welding the back end as we deal with a lot of salt on roads and travelling to the islands on holiday

I have the 2002 US V8 SE7 (luxury) version. I've had it for going on 10 years now. The thing has cost me an arm and a leg in maintenance over the course of the past decade. I've replaced most of the cooling lines short of the radiator or the heater core. I've replaced 2 front drive shafts, plugs and wires, the coil packs for said wires, a thermostat, 3 AC compressors, and just recently the water pump and the AC compressor again. Even today the valve pan leaks oil to the point that I have to monitor the oil level weekly. Coolant is another fun one, having to top it off at the end of any long commute as the radiator like to leak in a different place every day it seems. The vehicle has been nothing but problem after problem. But I love it - and I will run it until the engine goes. It's hands down some of the most fun I've had in a vehicle and I just cannot bring myself to retire it. It's not been my daily driver for about two years now, but it will always feel like my main vehicle.
In order to be considered a car enthusiast one has to have owned the following two vehicles; an Alfa Romeo, and the other is a Land Rover. Anyone who owns an older Landy is the kind of person who goes down to the animal rescue and takes the dog that's known to have a few issues. They get it home, and using constant positive re-enforcement they love it for what it is, and don't hate it for what it isn't. I own an 08 200 series LC, and if I keep the miles down and look after it, I'm sure it will out last me. The other vehicle I own is a LR4, and its definitely the naughty one out of the two. Even though its been super reliable, occasionally the Solihull sun will shine through, and she'll play a trick on you, like the other day when my programmed satellite radio buttons on the touch screen did not actually co-inside with the channel. E.g. You press the screen for Alt-Nation and Classic Rewind plays haha. This little game was quickly gone when I turned on the ignition to drive home later in the day.

Love my 2004 facelift TD5 manual 7 seat, bought it 11yrs ago with 31,000 miles
on it, now covered just shy of 200,000! Re mapped, and with a better
inter cooler (and completely dump the EGR system, and pipework), pulls
well, and on long runs can return up to 40mpg!!

Great video, as a daily driver of a 1994 Disco I can totally relate to the irrational and wallet-draining joy of getting in one of these things every day. By the way, the little hook is a "curry hook" for hanging takeaway on on the way home. My mother got one in 2001, the US dealer even used that term!
This was a good video, you covered everything about the vehicle very thoroughly without wasting time. You are lucky to own one with a diesel engine. I am glad that you were honest about their reputation that they have for needing repairs, so that buyers know what they are getting into when they purchase one.
The space under the passenger seat houses the CD player for my 2004 HSE Disco in the US.
Your comment about feeling safer in a larger vehicle is one of the reasons why I love my '05 Toyota 4Runner. Sure it's probably overkill for where I'm living currently in southern Ontario, but when I do need it, having 4 wheel drive is super helpful. Good job on the video!

Greetings from South Africa. As a blind person, now 25 years old, great review. I'm not really a huge fan of these newer Discoveries but I love the 300tdi and td5 models, although I haven't experienced the td5 models yet but I do hear them driving around. I would definitely take a manual transmition with both the 300tdi and td5. However, with the defender 110 I love the double cab versions with the 300tdi and 2.4l Puma turbo diesel engines while my 21-year-old brother likes the more traditional Defender 110 station wagon.

Great vid thanks!. Nice clear audio as well! I had my TD5 Disco for a few years. had to totally rebuild the engine after a run away caused by a cracked head, so always check your oil level, in fact check it every day if you can! Dont dis the "Curry hook" at 6:10. Apparently it really was designed to hold a takeaway food bag! Worked great, i really miss it! Mine averaged 30 MPG, a manual and mainly sticking to 60 MPH max. Copart sell lots of written off Discos, just breaking the facelift headlights and cracking a bumper is enough to write them off these days! Happy motoring!

I had the adventure for 5 years and when I bought it there was 120k on the clock and I sold it with 180k on it, it was a brilliant vehicle and never let me or the wife down...
I only sold it as my father gave us his discovery td5 es which he owned from new, it's now 18 years old and apart from the original fuel pump packing up the other day it's been 100% reliable, in fact it's about to take me and my family and a Sankey Trailer down to Corfu in Greece...
I've always serviced them when they needed it and looked after them and that's the secret to owning any vehicle..
Next time your starter goes just look on eBay for td5 starting motor kit!!!
I'm not saying we haven't had any problems but they've never let us down, well apart from the 18 year old fuel pump!

Arthur Stein-Tarnowski I actually decided to go the other way as we were struggling to find campsites on the way down!
We went north with the Land Rover and Trailer with my roof tent mounted on top, we decided on Scandinavia and managed to get up inside of the artic circle with my wife and 2 boys!
We covered 4700miles in 13 days and visited 9 countries and lots of cities on the journey, the Land Rover performed brilliantly apart from a fault with a 3 month old alternator which packed up near Stockholm!
I managed to find a second hand alternator which got us home.
Yes we live in the southwest of England and the countries we visited are as follows...
France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Denmark, into Sweden across the Oresund Bridge, Norway up to the Artic circle centre, then back into Sweden and across to Finland.. back to the south of Sweden and the ferry to Rostock in Germany and then stayed in Berlin, then into Poland to fill up with cheap Diesel before heading back to the UK...
Lots of driving but a truly wonderful trip...

Arthur Stein-Tarnowski yes it’s worth a go, we loved Norway and the top part of Sweden but had a couple of nasty experiences near Stockholm and Malmo... anyway because of this I’d never go back to Sweden’s unless I was staying in the northern part!
We also had some trouble near the Finland boarder on a campsite, none of our problems were caused by Swedish people!
Up the north we wild camped and found the country truly beautiful when out in the wilderness so pack the car and head of mate, you won’t be disappointed even if you do encounter a few nasty bastards on the way!

Agreed! What an all round good vehicle, quirks and all, great drive and a good 4x4... The Disco 2 Td5 still a firm favorite here in sunny South Africa and still many on the roads, I will not easily sell mine!

Aug '18, really neat Boyo, you need to do more of these. Own a Td5 Man & had it 17 years in South Africa, had very little trouble with it. It's only done 200, 000kms as I am fortunate enough to drive other Landys as well. One of the folks in the 'replies' said these things become part of the Family. That is so right! Mine has been all over southern Africa & had some great adventures. Enjoy yours! Come to Africa some time.....I think you would enjoy the adventure. Great video I have a D2 in the uk td5 awesome vehicle I use it to commute to London doing about 500 miles a week spent a heap of time doing bits to it it has 2" lift so coils all round terra ferma shox cooper 265/70/16 boots and I love it however also living in the south of Australia I own a Toyota 105 land cruiser now that's a beast 4.2 it has an aftermarket Garrett turbo twin tanks 4" lift draw system I could go on. My dad used to have an R-reg td5 like yours, but it had the 3 litre Buick V8. That car was amazing, we loved it to bits

Nice review. I keep looking at the older disco and thinking of getting one. I already have a d3 and d4, both of which are used daily. Running costs are about 90 fuel a week for about 400 miles of travel. Around 500 road tax a year for each. I found a brilliant Land Rover independent garage which has cut my servicing costs significantly against dealer prices. I also found that learning to do small jobs like interim services myself then hopefully it helps to keep the bigger bills at bay. I take the d3 off road and it is great fun. I took it across the Pyrenees for 10 days, using as many off road tracks a possible from the Mediterranean side to the Atlantic coast as an overland trip, one of the best holidays I have had. Land Rovers are expensive to run and maintain, but they pay back by giving you a very safe car, a workhorse for towing things, old size for my four kids and Saint Bernard dog, and awesome off road ability. Oh, and finally, as a motorway cruiser, the discovery is very comfortable, which makes up for the fact you see the fuel gauge dropping🤪. I really like the look of the discovery 2 and see a couple regularly that have been maintained very well. I may sell the d3, buy a d2 and get a smaller car for daily drives and keep the d2 for off roaring trips. Finding a club is also a good thing to do, torque 4x4 accessories is on Facebook, based down south but hold regular events across the country. A group of good guys with bags of experience and only charge 5 per trip to help with buying new maps which then result in new trips. Thanks for the review, it’s refreshing to see such a honest one.

Have now watched your video a couple of times and always enjoy your overview of this vehicle although i may have some slightly different opinions on some of the aspects to this amazing vehicle.
My first Disco was the Disco 1 V8 and what a piece of machinery was that ! besides the thirst of it 3.9lt V8 it was quite something to drive . I acquired my Disco II TD5 manual basically from new in 2002 and still have it today in 2021and will never part with it. I will never replace the air suspension for coils as I have never had any issues with them other than I think they are another engineering marvel with some incredible benefits. Yes have replaced the air bellows once after 180,000Km and will do the same in the near future as I have now done 320.000Km and with no sagging.
I have a remote (fob) for the suspension (which comes as a standard accessory ) whereby i can lower the hight from its normal position till it bottoms out and this is extremely valuable for me (at 72 years old) to hitching up my caravan yes no lifting no pulling no pushing all at a press of a button thanks to the air suspension. My caravan has movers fitted so there is no effort in hitching or unhitching anywhere i go. I regularly service my TD5 and change oil every 10,000Km irrespective and running costs are not that exorbitant in todays terms. Even here at the tip of Africa we are still able to get spares at reasonable prices for land Rovers.
If its looked after and well maintained there is no reason for it to be a high maintenance cost vehicle. Show me a vehicle that has not had its starter motor/alternator or what ever replaced/repaired that is almost 20 years old !

Haha, I know exactly what you mean about the saggy air suspension... Our one (almost identical spec to yours) kept sagging down overnight and failing to raise up again when it started. I can honestly recommend the swap to coil springs, as it meant we no longer had to worry about the sagging, and handling and comfort was drastically improved. Plus, its just one less thing to worry about breaking. If you have any more issues with the air, don't keep hoping it'll fix itself like we did for so long, just do the swap and save yourself the trouble!
The way you described the sensation of driving a larger vehicle is my experience driving a truck. People are always surprised I drive a truck; I don't seem like a "truck guy" (though, like yourself, they're grateful for it when they need furniture or their old stove hauled off). But I like the visibility; I like the structural strength; I like knowing that if someone blindsides me in their sports car because they ran a red light, I probably won't even notice and they'll probably realize they should get a bigger vehicle.

I owned a once rusty chassis early 3 door manual 200TDi Disco for 10 happy years, It done everything I asked of it but did keep it mechanically In very good order. It ran quite happily on a mixture of fresh new cooking oil plus diesel and when cold outside a splash of unleaded, and never needed heater plugs to start it when cold out.. It was very basic but less to go wrong, and was a sad day when it went to a collector.... Now a few years later I have its baby brother, a high spec Freelander diesel auto, in HSE version, but you cant run it on cooking oil - lol

Ah the Land Rover Discovery… it’s a car, van, school bus, tow truck, shopping cart. It’s cheap and easy to repair. The ones I have owned (3tdi’s) have had reasonable fuel economy and of course they are awesome off road…and they are the coolest car in the car park!
I had a 1999 discovery II great car. If it were up to me I would still have it. Where your extra seats are in the rear I had storage. Which perfectly fit a 24 pack of beers in the US. I’ve got a 2018 discovery but my old one still holds a special place in my heart.
Everything u say about owning an SUV is so true! My family car is a dark green 1993 Nissan Safari/Patrol with a manual and . Through the years it has acquired some cosmetic damage and wear but man it's very comfortable very pleasant to drive on... Shifts and steers nicely, suspension's got some nice damping as well. Even on rough terrain and high-incline slopes it plows through like no other. Can also hit up to 100+kph on the highways as well. Quite a beast of a car and I'd love to own one for myself someday
The excessive noise could be due to previous owner removing the silencer and mid box front the exhaust system. I actually did same job myself on my TD5 and it gives you a little bit extra umph from the turbo. It also sounds cool.
I've still got my '97 4.6L P38, LPG dual-fuel, now on 320,000KM/ 200,000miles. Broken sunroof and recirculation flaps - everything else still works. :)
Hey, we're five cylinder buddies! I drive an old Volvo. My only regret with upgrading my desktop is that I can no longer say I have an i5 in my car and my computer.
That odd space under the passenger seat is for the optional 6 disc CD player, which you could control from your steering controls. You load the CD play via that slot.
My 2004 HSE has the CD player, and I purchased the Disco new in 2004.

Great review, I am looking to buy one. Your video touched on a lot of topics. A real person talking about a real vehicle. I live in New England and they do have a tendency to rust out the frame :( so far looked at 19 with either rusted out boxes or rusted out rears, the two with a good frame both had engine issues :( going to keep looking... Thinking of buying one in CA and driving back to Massachusetts. Wish me luck...

have had a 2003 since '09, has 240000 aussie kms on it..missus drives it everyday...
Starter same brand as Hilux.. fixed it as its a contact issue for $40Au..has Performance chip..egr delete...Elect rust protector.. straight exhaust no muffs sounds like old school Audi quattro..Some Td5s punching 220bhp....Great trucks for diy as the landrover community online is awesome!!
