  • So SNK has finally shown off how the elusive Garou 2 will look and in a torrent of conflicting thoughts I tried to pin some down and vomit out a coherent script. I'm honestly not sure how accurate these thoughts still are to my current feelings after having a day to sit with the teaser, but I feel like I should upload it regardless.

    I would have focused more on what made the original Garou stand out so much, the beautiful and expressive animations and visual effects where every detail mattered. Maybe we just haven’t seen enough and that true Garou goodness will come out once we actually see a few more interactions and moves.
    I think that if the character animation looks good enough to show the true charisma of the cast, then it can stand out and attract new players, just like the original game still does 24 years later.
    I also really dig the MVC3 style shading, the comic book style is SO fitting for a new Fatal Fury. Wish Terry’s jacket looked a little less orange tho 😬 but that’s just a nitpick.

    What I’m really hoping for (even though I doubt we’ll get it) is more than just the same three modes. I don’t want to turn on the game and just see Arcade, Online, Training, and that’s it. Like, I’m not asking for a full on Story Mode or something like that (because I really doubt they’ll do something like that), but I’m tired of SNK games having less content in it than Tekken 3 on the PS1.
    Like, jeeze, don’t charge me 60 to 70 dollars plus DLC on a game that only offers Arcade and that’s that. I love SNK, I really do, but they make games like they’re still arcade ports instead of full on games.

    While I think it's fine, I'm also the type that doesn't really love the hyper realistic direction half the fighting game genre is going nor do I love the super ridiculous exaggerated anime designs of the other half. My core feelings are that I'm not really worried about the graphics as long as SNK can actually prioritize giving us a cool story mode that explores the characters in ways we haven't seen since the 90s. Fatal Fury characters have been frozen in time since 1995 and this game should take advantage of that instead of just shitting out another competitive-focused fightan like with SamSho, a series that only got away with it because it wasn't featured in KOF. I can forgive the game not being Tekken 8 graphically if they at least can pull off something like World Tour, but actually interesting and not just an OC filler arc that's clearly waiting for Season 1 to be finished before adding something substantial.
    SNK already has KOF for the raw fightan experience. Fatal Fury needs to be more than just the same as it ever was otherwise I really don't see a good future for the company.

    • @JohnSexDD
      @JohnSexDD  Před 11 měsíci

      Yeah, now that the graphics have been revealed, my primary concern is now what exactly the single player content will be and how these characters are going to be depicted. If that side of the game kicked ass I would be a lot more forgiving of the visuals not being mindblowing.

  • @hyogaiceheart
    @hyogaiceheart Před 11 měsíci +21

    I think it's totally fine to be critical, the thing I don't get is why SNK gets so much criticism on graphics and "asset flips" much more than other companies who do the exact same thing (not signaling you out btw.)
    But the very games you mention do it too (Tekken has been doing it for god knows how long, SF, Guilty Gear, etc.) My guess is that you hold SNK to a higher standard, which is fine, nothing wrong with that.
    Also, its nothing new for them specifically, they've been doing it since the 90s (KOF 94-2003, KOF 12-13, FF3 to RB2, etc.)
    Unfortunately, Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu has never been a game "normies" turned to look at and play. Mark of the Wolves was the pinnacle of 2d animation, and yet still is the nichest of the niche, I know this because I was around when it came out. I remember playing it at the break room of a game company I worked for around the year 2003 and people were asking me if it was a sega genesis game lol.
    I do however agree with you that hey, if SNK wants to be a top AAA company, this game probably wont turn the heads of the mainstream. They cant even outsell their rival fighting games with established names, much less AAA games like what Activision, Square, Sony or whatever other billion-dollar company puts out.
    As a side note I think so far it looks much better than SF6 (I don't know why people think SF6 looks good, I guess because 5 was so bad). Sf6 looks like they couldn't decide whether they wanted to be realistic or stylized, so its some ugly weird mix of both that makes it look clay-like and washed out. The name alone sells that franchise and if you don't believe me check SF5. At least this game has a clear vision on the style they want to implement, whether people dig the style it or not is a different conversation. But hey, its just my opinion, I'm clearly in the minority lol.
    The question for me is do I wish this game to not exist at all and leave Mark of the Wolves as the legacy it left us. At this point I dont know, I guess I'll reserve judgement until the game comes out. Great video and keep the faith! 🙂

    • @JohnSexDD
      @JohnSexDD  Před 11 měsíci +4

      The thing is, I'm fine with "asset flips" (I probably should've used a different term since that one has such a negative connotation" if they're in service to the game. But COTW's models are built off of XV's which are in turn built off of XIV's. Reusing models that have their origins in 2016 just seems cheap after a certain point and denies Fatal Fury it's own identity. Even back in the 90s when they were running concurrently, FF and KOF never shared sprite art. Already a lot of people are pointing out similarities in how KOF XV and COTW look which is not good when SNK needs to sell this as a different series that can stand on it's own. I believe Fatal Fury is an amazing franchise with the potential to at the very least reach the heights of GG Strive but I can't help but feel they're falling at the first hurdle here.
      Gotta disagree on SF6 though, I think the game looks fantastic lol Not perfect by any means, but closer than any other modern FG in my opinion

    I'm of the opinion that it's because it's an 8th gen game. If it was a 9th gen game like Tekken 8 then yeah, I think it would have been on that level. I wouldn't be surprised that when CotW was greenlit it was just before the Saudi buyout and the ten year plan agreement. A 9th gen Psycho Soldier reboot in the next five years would be a turning point for the company (as it took DMC5 around that amount of time to be developed which I imagine a Psycho Soldier game to be like).

If people did what youre doing and just voice how you arent a fan of it or felt it couldve been pushed further with the visuals, than dope I fuck with it and Im all for the criticism. My biggest gripe is that there are people really voicing how much they like the look of the game but then youll have people come outta nowhere and shit on them for liking it or discredit them for liking it as if they dont know any better. Truth be told I dont think even if it had an even better art style/graphic that it would matter with getting non-snk fans to look at it or be itching to play. It just not SF, Tekkem or MK. Is what it is. Do I want SNK games to become more main stream and have more eyes outside of the concentrated fandom? Of course, but I'm keeping it a stack, thats an EXTREMELY difficult uphill battle. • @Rationalific
    @Rationalific Před 11 měsíci +1

    I do agree that there is nothing particularly special about the new Fatal Fury graphics. With that said, although you focused on times when SNK was near the top of fighting game graphics design, do remember that from KOF '94 - 2003 (10 games and 10 years), the graphics in each installment were almost completely the same. While you may have been blown away in '94 or in 2009 with XII and XIII, I think about 2000 and later and wonder how the graphics could have changed so little even that late. Also, that was back during the period when video game graphics were changing immensely, whereas now, graphics have pretty much settled down and don't change nearly as quickly.
    So in my opinion, we should not really expect huge graphical overhauls over a period of 3 years from game to game by the same company and in the same genre. These days, true graphical improvements in sequels generally take more like 7 years or so (around the time it takes for a console generation, and also the time from SFV to SF6), and feel that time may even lengthen in the future.
    The good thing is that I do really like the graphics of KOF XV. So it's not a bad thing to me that Fatal Fury looks pretty similar, just with some new filters. However, I also do get your point, and I think that while technologies haven't really made a huge leap over the past 3 years, there are other styles out there. I'd honestly rather Fatal Fury not be as "gritty / semi-grotesque" as SF6. ArcSys-style anime would work better in my opinion, but maybe that's going too far in that direction. More than anime, I like their looks of the KOF XV character portraits and hope SNK creates styles that reflect that even better. The current "regular" 3D rendered semi-anime style does kind of work for me for SNK fighting games in general. But that's me, and I do think that KOF XV is the best looking KOF (sprites or no sprites) in existence even if it's not mind-blowing.

      Sure, it happens. It's dependant on the studios making the game. Recent Pokemon games recieved maybe the biggest backlashes of all time for their shit graphics in trailers, and looked exactly the same at launch. And if we're talking fighting games, most recent announcement trailers represent the final product fairly accurately outside of subtle touches that you'd have to look out for to notice. Strive, SF6, Samsho 2019 and KOF XV are all examples of this. There's no reason to believe COTW will be different.

    It's all about tone. You can tell by SNK's marketing even for this game that yet again they lack ambition. Look at the track record so far. Putting a current gen 120fps Samurai Shodown only on Xbox Series to the tune of no one.
    Since Samurai Shodown, none of there games have World Premiered at big events i.e. State of Play, Showcase, Summer Game Fest, Gamescom, Tokyo Game Show, The Game Awards. They still small simply because (unlike back then) they think small. EVO is NOT the place to World Premiere games. Just teasers at best. They think bozos like Maximillian giving his reaction to their trailer is more important. You already have your base at EVO. They gotta go big or go home and right now it seems likely they already on the way back to the driveway.

    SNK clearly cares more about thier unique artstyle, rather than looking realistic. Street fighter and tekken were always meant to look realistic from jump street since that's clearly where they wanted to go. Only certain SNK games such as IKARI and Dragon & Tiger's Fist actually seem to want something that's realistic in terms of artstyle. If official art and in game sprites are any indication.

    • @JohnSexDD
      @JohnSexDD  Před 11 měsíci +2

      You can't seriously be implying that Street Fighter was supposed to be realistic and KOF wasn't. Both franchises original spritework was rooted in realism (or as close as you could get with sprites) but SF branched off into cartoon territory way faster than KOF did with the Alpha series. KOF only stopped having realistic visuals with XII, and that's just because nona was in the steering wheel.
      FF and AOF have pretty much identical artstyles as well so if you're saying AOF wanted a realistic artstyle then the same is true for FF.

      @@JohnSexDD Well, D&TF clearly was better than Hungry Wolf Legend in that regard. Assuming what you say is true, then I think the thing that soured the realistic look for SNK was how negatively KoF 14 was percived to be in the graphics department.
      Even though I think SNK should know that it wasn't the fact that models looked more real, but because the poor fidelity of said models.
      So I really don't think we'll see anything like KoF 14 model wise ever again unfortunately.

    The thing about SNK's art style is it stays true to it's anime roots. Saying COTW's art looks weak also means Guilty Gear and DNF Duel's also isn't good.
    If you look at the history of SNK's fighting games the art style really never changes. All they did was take the 2D anime version and make an exact copy of them in 3D.
    If you want ultra realistic, play Mortal Kombat where all they care about is graphics for Fatalities and give no shits about gameplay, because its fight engine sucks.
    SF6's graphics aren't that good. It's hit or miss based on the character. Guile's face looks perfect, but Chun Li and Ryu don't look anything like their previous versions. One problem SF has unlike KOF is the graphics aren't consistent. It doesn't know if it wants to be realistic or anime.
    The only other game series that is like SNK is Tekken. It evolved based on the technology at the time. You can take Jin from TK3 and compare him to TK8 and they resemble each other, which can't be done with Ryu.

      I don’t think it’s 100% true that all of SNK’s fighting games had the same anime art style. Of course they all had some amount of anime influence, but I’d argue that the early KOF games (like, up until XII or even 99) had a slightly more grounded and realistic art style. Early KOF sprites tended to have really detailed texturing and more realistic proportions (especially compared to capcom stuff or even earlier fatal fury games), and if I imagined what an HD 3D version of KOF94 would look like, I’d honestly picture something that more so resembles modern Mortal Kombat than KOFXV.
      I think XV does a pretty decent job at translating XII/XIII’s style into 3D, but to say all SNK fighting games are strictly anime styled feels a bit wrong to me.
      Now, MOTW (and fatal fury in general) is definitely more anime inspired, so I think the art direction that COTW has shown so far makes sense and looks pretty alright, but when compared to Strive or DNF, it can feel a little underwhelming. It’s good, but not unique or stylized enough to feel groundbreaking (cel shading reminds me of mvc3, and obviously the models look straight out of XV).

      @000mjd Před 11 měsíci +2

      It depends original Fatal Fury series was more western based, specially if you look games like Fatal Fury 3/Real Bout then they inclined to more anime style with Real Bout Special/ RB2 but the western roots still were there
      Only to Garou they decided to incline to a fully anime style

  • @Daryom
    @Daryom Před 11 měsíci +3

    i think they should tweak the colors and try to go all in with the cell shading american-comic style, but overall i feel the same, i think it looks good and way better than XV, but fuck, i dont like how on XV and apparently this game too, colors are just too fucking sharp and on your face. i really dislike how effects look on XV too, like fire and wind, it just looks so weird and saturated, and when i think about Fatal Fury and SPECIALLY Garou, i think of more washed out colors, even grungy or getting that 90's vibe, not orange Terry.
    Gameplay wise, i just think it also separates a lot from XV, i sound like a XV hater but there are just too many things in there that i didnt liked, and gameplay kinda is one of them, you only get combos if you spend your meter chaining EX moves, i hope SNK makes CoTW go back a bit on the traditional side, im just a novice scum on FGs, but i always felt like strong and weak specials on XV were the exact same thing but with different damage (combo-wise).

    Graphics aside, one thing SNK needs to do better is the marketing. This for me is not good enough as a first teaser for the game (zoomed in and cropped unfinished gameplay footage). It doesn't help with the graphics talks, and most probably does nothing for the 'normies'. Compare to what SF6 and Tekken 8 put out as first trailers... this in comparison is way less exciting, and it is not all to do with the graphics.

    I was greatly disappointed with what I saw. After all that talk about wanting to be among the top 10 gaming companies, after finally gaining the budget to get into AAA development, after Oda stating the game would look different from what we've seen in the past, all we got was KOFXV with a cel-shade filter. Now the best case scenario is that they had no Saudi money to utilize due to the game being in development before the buyout. But if that's not the case, WTH happened? Are the higher ups at SNK not allowing Oda to utilize the new budget due to it being a fighting game? Or are Oda and his team fools?

    • @JohnSexDD
      @JohnSexDD  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Pretty sure the buyout was before COTW was even greenlit, so no reason this isn't the first game they start pumping that money into. What's more likely is that the Saudi shit was just regular business stuff and the funding they talked about was just a bunch of fluff.
