Great video Andrew - I particularly like how you included a thermals test and the sound test, which I do not see always included in other reviews. I migrated from an M1Max 64 GB RAM to M3Max 64 GB RAM, and at first, was sort of ehh as it felt snappier, but not a ton of a difference, but after a couple weeks of more intensive use (and gaming!) I've noticed much more of a difference. It's a real beast. She is beautiful with the darker color, however, like you, I'm anecdotally noticing more fan noise, which is to be expected, but not conducive to the best gaming experience. I often run it through my Apple Studio screen so it's a real workhorse set up.

  • @tj1470

    Hi Andrew
I had just ordered the MBP 14 M3 Max (16c CPU 40c GPU). I noticed that you mentioned your reasoning for getting the 14c CPU 30c GPU is to avoid heat issues.
Does the 14c 30c run alot cooler & less noisy? I liked the idea of getting the max spec apple offered but wondering if I'd be better off with M3 Max 14c cpu 30c gpu 94gb rather than 16c cpu 40c gpu 64GB. I don't want my hands and legs burning as previously experienced with other laptops.
I will mainly use the laptop for everyday tasks - Netflix, CZcams, Internet Browsing, Microsoft Word/Excel/One Note. Occasionally, I'll be viewing CAD drawings & rendering of properties.
What would you recommend? Is there really a noticeable difference in heat & fan sound? Considering I won't be pushing the laptop, would I experience heat & fan issues?
My wife has the MBP 16 M2 Max 38c 64GB and it's never even gotten warm. I assumed the higher GPU would run cooler as it was over powered therefore less effort required.
I just want something future proof, to last me the next 5-6 yrs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I'm looking to dive into video editing with Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Adobe After Effects, as well as photo editing with Lightroom and Photoshop, with the goal of starting my own CZcams channel. I need a laptop that will last me 3-4 years and can handle these tasks smoothly. Currently, I'm using a Windows laptop for basic tasks like Word, Excel, and web browsing. Any recommendations on which MacBook model would be the best fit for my needs? Thanks in advance for your help!"

Great review Andrew! If I may ask, was the blooming and low response time (not refresh rate) a noticeable inconvenience? Or was it irrelevant to your day to day usage? I’ve read that the blooming is extremely minimal with those miniLed displays. Not sure about the response times though.
Reason I’m asking is because I’m looking to buy a new 16 inch MacBook Pro however, due to the nature of my job being a developer (scrolling through a lot of code and looking at a lot of static White text on my terminal), I’m afraid that the blooming and low response time is gonna give me a bad/subpar experience.

Don't know about that. There have been many reviews regarding thermal throttling of the 14" form factor in comparison to the 16" form factor. The 16" version may be the way to go for power users these laptops are created for. At least with respect to the Max chips. As for the Pro chips get a refurbished M2 Pro from the Apple store. Some reviewers have shown the M3 Pro's reduced memory bandwidth to reduce performance in certain scenarios.

I think that for most people, the Macbook Pro 16 is the best daily driver. Good battery life, single threaded performance, touchpad, and speakers. The Mini LED is nice too.
Gamers though and workstation users should look elsewhere. Also, those who support repairable laptops should go elsewhere.
For Macs, be sure to buy the specs you need because you cannot upgrade.

Great review. I have 14in M1 Pro (8 core) and I am happy with it. Only thing I would love to upgrade is GPU (just for games). According to upgrade fees, they are insane and sometimes I am thinking about leave Apple ecosystem because of it. But at the end of the day I realise that windows laptop with similar quality isn't much cheaper and I do really like MacOS, iOS and iPadOS.

You’ll have a way wider selection of games on windows. If you’re looking for a windows gaming laptop you can get one for literally half the price of a Mac that will give you similar performance in games. Hell you can get a slimmer efficient windows laptop and build a gaming rig for the same price as a base m3 max MacBook Pro.

M3 max 16/40 will thermal throttle slightly on the 14 in so definitely get an m3 max 14/30 if you’re getting a 14 inch if that’s what you’re asking. If you’re asking if you should spec out an m3 pro or get a base model m3 max it depends on your use case. Like do you need extra storage, ram etc

@andrewmarcdavid The problem is that Apple really limited the display output, RAM choices, and even now the performance of the M3 Pro SoC. I would have to consider the M3 Max because of those limitations, but I certainly wouldn't get the unbinned model.

I had the 14” Max with upgraded CPU 48GB/2TB for a month and returned it.
I liked it, but I didn’t love it for $4500. It was not worth the price - this is saying something as I still have an Apple w/ Intel and I’m due for an upgrade.
The battery life wasn’t great for real world browsing performance (5-6hrs at medium brightness). It also hung (beach ball) even on Apple’s website with one tab open.

    • @passivlyassertive9696

The issue w/ the 14 in is that it will throttle with the full m3 max unbinned. I’m shocked that you didn’t even get 7 hours of battery on it though, what programs were you running? 4500 dollars is also a fuck ton of money to spend on a laptop I won’t lie. I’m considering the binned 14 in m3 max that you can usually find on sale for 3k.
