Heater Matrix Removal with dash in place

  • How to remove the heater matrix in a Peugeot 406, without having to remove the whole dash.
The heater matrix uses the engines coolant to heat up the interior of the car, when the coolant is warm it passes through the heater matrix, essentially a small radiator, the blower passes air through the heater matrix which then leaves the air vents as warm air.
Unfortunately in some cases the heater matrix can leak or become blocked, if it leaks then you will notice a loss of engine coolant, soggy carpets, misting windows, and a smell of coolant in the cabin. In this case its important that you change the heater matrix as soon as possible to avoid damage to the engine by overheating.
In some cars you need to remove the whole dash, but here i show that it is not necessary with the 406. Its not the easiest job due to limited access for some of the fixings, but it is possible with ordinary tools, one thing i would recommend is torx allen keys which would avoid the need to drill into the dash.
I dont flush out the coolant before doing this job because the car used here is for the scrapyard, if your car is a good car then drain the coolant, and have a container ready to catch any coolant when removing the pipes to the heater matrix.
When reinstalling the heater matrix use new O ring seals, there would be no point in going to all this effort to have another leak because of something as simple as O rings.
I have no idea why a heater matrix would develop a leak, perhaps if your pollen filter is damaged and letting in particles that may puncture it, or if you don't change you coolant frequently then it might start to corrode the matrix from the inside out.

Thanks for the interesting video, now I understand what the heater matrix is.
Anyone who is changing coolant ect please please clean it all up. Cats and Dogs are attracted to it (due to its sweet smell amd taste) and the antifreeze in coolant is highly toxic leading to death very quickly. Ethylene glycol has a very narrow margin of safety - which means only a tiny amount can result in severe poisoning. As little as one eighth of a teaspoon per pound of body weight in a cat of undiluted antifreeze can result in fatality.
    Thanks for the video..

Thanks for the important safety note. As i have a very hyperactive collie pup i find the best thing to do with antifreeze is when draining any is to keep the pup away until it is all cleared away.

Hey! Does this matrix have anything to do with the AC syste?
I've changed the compressor, ac radiator (in front of the main radiator), changed 1 pipe and made sure all seals are fine. It still leaks refrigerant somewhere?!! Could it be from this one little radiator under the dashboard? Or it holds only engine coolant?
    Please advice.
    Cheers!

very impressive and informative! So does this technique work on all older peugeots (306, 206 etc) or just the 406?

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  Před 10 lety

Im not sure about the other peugeots, they might possibly use the same heater matrix unit but weather or not the dash sits in the way i am not sure.

It isnt too bad a job on these, some of the other PSA cars you need to remove the dash to get access to the heater matrix.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV

I'm not too sure, i think the heater matrix is still installed the same way around so the steering column may need moved.

To be honest i dont know, i have never done this on a 306, but a mate has left one of this week ill take a look and see, although i know its not possible on the xsara hatch i have and it shares most of its bits with the 306.

Never worked on one myself, is this one of the older ones that shared the platform with the vw and seat equivilants?
A quick google for "ford galaxy heater matrix removal" brought up this
      www.forum.fordmpv.com/smf2/ford-galaxy-reference-library/heater-matrix-replacement/?PHPSESSID=0713ca1faf5b34c723e954db65eba7a0
May also be worth trying the same but for vw sharan and seat alhambra.
