This video im talking all about the New Ranger Regiment, these are my own thoughts and opinions based on experience serving in the Infantry.

    @scaleyback217 Před 2 lety +3

    Okay...... thanks, that's the first description I've witnessed which has given a clear picture of the role of these units. Can see the requirement for such and indeed think it should be expanded. There are a couple of other places on the map which may be ripe for this sort of development not just for local theatre use/training but also (from the Commonwealth countries) recruitment into a Commonewealth Inf Bde (not a totally new concept just an alteration of the original) for rapid deployment where and when required. Perfect home for them Cyprus - enough vacant buildings there and nice and centrally located for deployment.
    My biggest question is an old and often asked one - will the recruitment into these.... I'll say company strength units, they are hardly Bns, have a tendency to take the best and most motivated from the existing Inf/Arty/Armd/Engr/Sigs units to their detriment or will there be circulation for these Rangers ie after X years they return to their parent units? That would seem to make more long term sense than just creaming off the top and would then inject these soldiers with their enhanced skills back into the parent units or training units for the benefit of all and possibly motivating the next generation of soldier to follow in their footsteps. Just sharing an idea which may turn to shite once others have looked at it - willing to see both ends of the problem/solution though. Thanks for making it clearer in my old Herforder/Dortmunder befuddled brain.

    "Tabbing until you fall over...you need a brain as well". I wonder who you have in mind?! I trained as an Army officer in the late seventies (but entered a different profession) and it strikes me that the developments you describe are all good. Back then there was a general assumption that everyone knew everything and, therefore didn't need to be told. You were expected to pick it up as you went along. Also, it was usual to get tapped up, rather than apply for a particular regiment or course etc. It was all too opaque; almost secretive. Much healthier for the army and the individual, now. In defence of the Parachute Regiment, we don't mind you having a pop; aspiration is healthy! I'm sure your insightful videos are very helpful to army recruitment. They are likely to attract suitable applicants. Well done.

    • @Rangermedia
      @Rangermedia  Před 3 lety +3

      I’m not referring to any unit so you’ve unfortunately just made the assumption I’m referring to the Parachute Regiment. When Actually I’m just referring to in the past specifically in the Infantry, just being fit was what it was all about. Where as now there is a lot more emphasis and consideration on the conceptual piece as well as being fit enough. From my experience on junior Brecon around 2011 guys would be failing orders or estimates were very questionable but if they HCd their physical tests 2,3,5 miler they would still finish with a high grade. So no pop at specific units just taking on my experiences how I’ve seen a mindset shift.

    To join the 75th Ranger Regiment, U.S Army a candidate completes Basic Combat Training 22 weeks long, then Airborne School 3 weeks, next is RASP(Ranger Assessment & Selection Program) which is 8 weeks. If you you complete the above you get the right to don the tan beret of the 75th Ranger Regiment, U.S Army. Ready to kick ass and take names. It’s a training pipeline called 11X Option 40. Why doesn’t the British Army introduce a similar program to the Americans? Having experience usually means serving a few years in an infantry battalion before showing up for selection. In America the process is much simpler where some 18 year old kid can walk into a Recruiting Centre sign up for the 11X Option 40 and in less than a year he can be a U.S Army Ranger.

      Just 8 weeks of advancing current skills with the first 2 weeks being the selected phase. Fitness events and other bits and pieces, achievable if you put the work in. These battalions were already reduced in numbers 3/4 years ago. All their privates/lcpls etc where pushed out the the wider infantry. Leaving a rough minimum rank of Cpl. If the Army wants to recruit and keep smarter soldiers, they'll have to dramatically up their game in terms of pay, benefits, accommodation, leave, medical and support after serving. Plus, get rid of bullying NCOs. So the Army will have to revamp how it selects and develops NCOs and ensures that only the very best get anywhere near recruits. Recruit training is tough enough, without being abused or otherwise mistreated. I would never let any kids I knew join the Army, until I was as sure as I could be, that Deepcut could never happen again.

    right now is a great time to join the private sector. they will take you if you know your shit, even if you're not ex military.
    and by good time, i just mean easier to get your foot in lol. the job won't be easy. soldiers in ukraine have like a 2 week life expectancy and they're desperate for bodys. you can make about 1k a day but you'll need to survive lmao
    but if you do then you can contract to go sit on an oil refinery off the coast of east africa for a ton of money, or do some easy but boring babysitting as a psd operator
    but if you don't want to go the private sector route and want to join a military... idk what UK is up to but here in the US we've been hard focusing on forest jungle and trench warfare for the last couple years. it's starting to look like there's a decent chance we'll be deployed to eastern europe. at the very least, we're preparing for it.
    the marines are actually removing heavy armor from their units and focusing on small platoons that will unit out 6-8 man teams to be inbedded in areas like taiwan. highly mobile with land to air ordinance within their units instead of big convoys and armor
    all this to say... i don't know if we're going to war with china and russia, but we're sure as fuck getting ready for it. i would NOT want to serve in either of these possible conflicts. these aren't ak wielding hajis. these are nuclear powers with their own air and sea support who have transitioned flawlessly to drone warfare. i hope to god these wars don't pop off because if they do it'll be fucking gruesome. imagine ww2 with todays technology. we have automated combat technology right now... and that shit will 100% be utilized. the friendly fire casualties alone will be horrific

    Would like to see them try something completely different with a new regiment, completely new thinking, SF tends to have volunteers who put themselves forward so you get guys who will crawl over broken glass and will go to the ends of the earth, which is one virtue, alternatively you could cherry pick from the existing infantry units seeking who their peers think are the best - perhaps people who have been instructors at Catterick, that way you would get something that was differentiated from the existing special forces. You could also try a completely different style of leadership, bring in US Officers and in isolation trial that. From a variety of designs you can then see which performs best - kind of like Darwinism. : )

    With the information I've read, they seem to be planned to do the exact same job as Specialised Infantry Group are/were already doing, so why not just do a recruitment drive to increase numbers of SIG? Is it just a rebranding to raise interest and give the impression that the Defence review is making things better rather than worse or is there going to be actual, practical differences?

Rangers are looking likely to deploy often as advisors, trainers and similarly 'soft' roles in support of local forces, unbeknownst to adversaries, whilst maintaining the deployabilty to react in whatever region it is placed in for QRF style rescues, hostages, recces etc. FCF is a more direct warfighting unit, designed to meet the needs for following in Tier One units in high kinetic operations in extreme environments and conditions.

    It won't last, the army changes constantly, I was in 1 Rifles when we joined 3 commando brigade, army commandos we were known as, we all did the all arms commando course and a few years later it was canned, the army comes up with these weird and wonderful units and sub units and then sack it and change roles etc. I loved my 13 years in the army but after I left it seem to just go to shit, I have mates who stayed in for the full 22 and some of them are still there coming to the end of their careers and they all day the last 5 years or so it's got worse, no deployments, crap exercises etc.

    Ok so just to be very clear, this is really an infantry and advisory brigade. Not special forces, not rangers. The “ranger” role in the form as depicted in the US and many armies already exists in the UK, called the SFSG. There is a lot of silly semantics here and before you know it the whole British army will be called special forces.
    Also, this term ‘commando’ that gets banded about it the uk forces is also silly. Let’s just be clear, it’s a brand name but they’re not actually commandos. The Royal Marines are infantry battalions. Amphibious infantry but infantry nonetheless. Now I know there are changes afoot whereby some of them will actually operate as commandos, for the first time in decades if ever. And the army attached arms with those “army commando” flashes. It’s utterly cringe as they’re technically not even soldiers by which I mean they’re not even infanteers so to call yourself a commando is just ridiculous.
    Respect to all who serve but feet firmly on the ground with some perspective

      An Advisory unit will exist and continue to train, advise and assist. This new Ranger regiment will be special forces and open to everyone, they will have the ability to go into situations with the units they are training. Where as train, advise assist. Do not have the capability to move into hostile areas with the people they are mentoring.
      This is early days and will take time just like any other capability/unit formed.

      @@lade_edal - you're way off the mark with your commando-are-not-commandos comments.
      I have an utterly biased view here having served decades in the RM but in that time I've done dozens of true 'commando' operations.
      From cliff assaults and survival training in Norway to live compound raids in Afghanistan. I've operated in the Artic, Deserts, tundra, mountains, jungle, cities and water. What could be more commando than that?
      Additionally, to suggest only Infanteers are soldiers is facile, we literally couldn't do anything without our support elements to deliver and sustain us in theatre, saying so undermines and devalues whatever sensible things you might have been trying to say.

      @@JammyDodger45 if that’s what qualifies one as a commando then most all of the infantry are commandos. Not one thing you mentioned is not done by all infantry at some point.
      I did not say attached arms are dispensable or not valuable. Of course they’re critical to the mission. But even so, being critical to a mission does not make you a ‘soldier’.

    Sorry this is going to come off as ignorant but why should anyone join the British Army now that it's gone all PC because according the ex members they weren't allowed to swear, yell, insult and had to use pronouns so not to hurt anyone's feelings not to mention the unrealistic adverts that portray the Army as all touchy feel with tags it's okay to cry showing the Army to be a safe space apparently it also cuased alot of soldiers to quit?
    Hell I even heard one ex soldier who left because according to him the Army had become more concerned with being woke than proper training he said there where rumours circulating that recruits where being given red and yellow cards to hand in to their Commanding officers to rate whether they were being shouted at to much by their corporals.
    I don't know if any of this is true though maybe you could shine a light because right now I know for many people the British military looks like a joke with all this feelings first campaign in advertising when they should be showing what the job intails training and combat.
