There's no way of knowing if this is a improvement or not, but the training needs to be harder for the soldiers even if it takes more time to train them or get them up to par. But they need to have a incentive or know of the incentive.

Clearly everything and the approach to training recruits has changed, the mindset in my basic infantry training in Queens Division Bassingbourn in 1986 was to" whittle out the weak and unsuitable". They were very good at it, they applied what was necessary to zero on those guys and get rid of them.
I did my basic training the same year at the guards depot and my mate joined the pioneers and I think they trained at Bassenbourne, from what he told me the guards depot was a lot tougher bullshit wise, still hard though.
Did my basic at Bassinbourne in 94. Still remember the airfield and the miles we did around there, wonder if they are allowed to rope climb as high as the old hangers these days? ' Can understand change in training methods but what will it be like when they get to their units when the old heads and RSM are old school?

Sound like the soldier academy is the halfway house between boy's brigade and scouts to the army.

@@CombatReadyHQ I wouldn't know, I went from boy's brigade to the royal green jackets as it was changing to the green jackets, now known as the Rifle's. My problem is I spent 12 years in the bb then wanted to be a career soldier, the main way up the ranks was to be a academic which I am definitely not, getting through the ranks on merit was virtually unheard of.
Things change I agree, of course they do , but in this case not for the better . Basic training shouldn't be easy, it's designed to toughen the soldier to deal with combat not treat them with kids gloves. It's meant to harden the body and mind to be resilient, deal with pressure, and be tired through lack of sleep. Dropping standards to get the numbers up isn't the answer.

I was a recruit as part of the soldier development course. I didn't end up joining in the end as I decided it just wasn't for me, I enjoy my freedom too much. But I must say, the training I recieved was excellent and the corporals were fantastic. They supported you every step of the way and tried all they could to encourage and instill discipline. At the same time, however, when I interacted with other platoons outside of SDC, they quite openly saw us as outcasts. But oh well! I took some serious life lessons from the SDC and I still use them a year later. The mental training was the best as if I'm honest, I don't know if I'd be here today without it.

Completely different way of training to when I served in the 80s and 90s . To make a personal comparison it now seems really soft, basic training is meant to be both mentally and physically hard and tough this seems to pander to a soft weak mindset, looks crap.
Things change, when you went through training 100% your training team thought you had it way easier than they did years when they were recruits
Lol, day one in basic in 1984, meeting the training staff, Gentlemen, two things you need to know as from today, ONE, We are not your friends, TWO, pain is a sensation to be enjoyed, that definitely set the precedent for what was back then 12 weeks basic training. Revellie was 4.30 a.m and rarely got to bed before midnight. Learning to perform to a high standard whilst deprived of sleep, fierce discipline and constant physical and mental stress was what produced real soldiers in my opinion. I actually loved basic, what I see here is an army that is virtually completely civilianised compared to what I went through.
I went through 22 years and it was a different world. Thrashed every minute of every day from day one. It was the making of us all and best memories of my life.

Old school 80's BT was miles away from what they recieve now. You never knew your Mother had had a sex change until she spoke to you in a mans voice first day in Woolwich. Then you learned fast, 'she won't give hugs when you feel down either' lmao,, I remember the FS saying that on line up. That was a serious wake up call. Ironing, washing, cleaning, boots, PT, drill, etc etc, was no walk in the park, more so when you found out the day only had 3 hrs sleep time, if you were lucky lol.. Keep up the good work.
I noticed a change all the way back in 2009 were young soldiers demanded respect straight out of training purely because they past basic training, that went down well with the senior Toms. I also saw a lower standard from LCpls were they clearly couldn't do their job and get a grip with military terminology and tactics, more so from commonwealth NCOs. I had to do one on one on few of my guys on how to understand and give a set of orders, how to make a ground model and field craft.

My training is terrible. Section commanders just see it as something they have to do and take no notice of how the soldiers are feeling. Another box ticking exercise. The PT sessions all come in a big cluster you'll have 3 all in quick succession increasing injury then not not have a PT session for over 10 days 😂

Basic was all about break you down then build you up squaddies share respect because they have all suffered a tough basic training. I joined in the 80s, bad kit and bad accommodation but felt great once I'd passed basic

@@CombatReadyHQ I did my phase 1 over 35 years ago now,& I still rember the PTI & his first comment in meeting us"im going to melt you lot like a cornetto in a oven" interesting tho is what the cpl who trained us in them days thought,we were infantry like them and would be going to their regiment or one within the div other cpls were cap badged and not allowing them to do the recruits full training Litchfield, the ITC Catterick, diff training team and really seemed to piss them off.

My question comes from something I heard you mention, with regards to Phase 1 training is that the same no matter where you go, etc Harrogate, Pirbright or Winchester and what regiment/corps you decide you want to join?
I joined Royal Navy 1998, HMS Raleigh. Now that was a shock to the system. They didn’t piss about when it came to hurting feelings. Humiliation was mandatory, and absolutely no sleep (hardly) whatsoever. Half my intake were failed bootnecks, left Lympstone around 22 weeks in, most of them. This looks soft but makes sense for today’s society I guess? My intake was like they let half of them out of borstal. There were lots of scrapping in the block, as everyone was so stressed. Instructors just let us sort out problems ourselves.
I don't know what program you use for editing, but I think you'd benefit from a bit more gain on your mic track. Keep it up, enjoying your videos immensely!

Great video mucker. For me, this reeks of recruitment desperation. Agree with the tech updates, and recalling my own experience, the lads and I hated the idea of being back-trooped to Sword, which was motivation enough to dig in (so I don't agree with the fluffy side sqn/troop thing).

But doesn't every generation look back on the next and think its a chance too far? As long as they managed to turn out people that will follow orders and be in a position to close in the kill the enemy then thats what matters..... but in all honesty I have a feeling once they get to unit they might have a fair about of shock!
To be honest im completely shocked at the drop in the level of standards . I joined in 98 the standard's were very different back then. If it had been any softer i wouldn't be alive today . I will say this to any one looking to join . Train hard fight easy ! Believe me you wont appreciate what those words truly mean until you come under enemy contact .
I joined 78 at depot Para, gradual wasn’t in the vocabulary we were run ragged to knock the civilian out of you. I never understood why we had to run at the fastest runners pace I always had problems keeping up distance not a problem, when i hit my mid 50s my marathon pace was 3.30.

My almost 5 years service in the Royal Engineers from 88-93 were some of the most traumatic and unhappy years of my life, particularly because of the abuse of authority, and still affects me to this day. That said it was part of the path of my life and lessons were learned and some good was instilled in me.
I'm currently in the recruitment process and they've must of done something right as they stated for my 4 month medical records return, "a high number of applicants at the moment" this slow return rate is due to them being unable to filter a large volume of applications at a time. However, even as a new solider going in I disagree with some of the methods the army is taking which almost "relaxes" the initial training experience which I believe deserves to be difficult and potentially unejoyable at moments as it acts as a shock of capture and can build a recruits mental resilience and capability to act under stress.
The problem is it went too far with the horrendous treatment dished out at Deepcut and the “suicides” so the army over corrected in the other direction .
It looks shambolic bring back the 21 weeks at itc or the walloping the jocks got at glencourse for 21 weeks.
In an ideal world, recruits should do map reading and navigation but realistically how much navigation would they be required to do in combat, that is the Section IC & 2IC’s job
I don't think its so. You ever look at US Rangers training where there sergants scream at their men right in their faces mental health or deafness. That is totally over the top.
The British army for centuries was based on the short sharp shock treatment, treating recruits like convicts from day one, this immediately got rid of snowflakes and lads who couldn't hack discipline, the only problem was a lot of recruits left because of the bullshit factor. When I did my basic training in the 80, s at the guards depot Pirbright you never had a minute to yourself and the instructors didn't care if you passed or failed. They started with large platoons because they knew they would get whittled down to maybe a dozen after the training finished. From day one you doubled or were drilled everywhere which made you a tight cohesive unit. The year after I passed out they brought in training shoes instead of boots, quilts and generally made it easier, it was noticeable back then that the standards had dropped because the new draft joining battalion were unfit, not up to standard in drill, weapons etc so had to be brought up to standard to fit in, many went straight onto remedial PT. That was over thirty years ago so I dread to think how soft it is today. There was generally a 75%failure rate at the guards depot about the same as the paras and marines at the time. Lowering the standards does not create better soldiers it creates weaker ones but I can understand why they've done it because nobody wants to join up now. 😢
Presume Harrogate is today's equivalent of jnr ldrs regt which I did as royal engineer in 76 ! As we were thrashed from the get go !

Soldier development course is a good idea for people that missed fitness by a small small margin but its worrying at the same time
Back in the 80's training was considered weaker than previous, this has been happening since forever. Training needs to be getting stronger however there's been a couple of concerns since the days of Waterloo I know because we have had family during and ever since, straight after Peterloo happened. Yes a war economy is needed but the economy needs to be kept strong after, the military have no incentive to employ exmilitary straight after their service is one and if you want to be a career soldier you have to have money or become a academic, many people are good enough but have neither money or academically minded this needs to change. Soldiers going up through the ranks needs to be done on merits but this is only ever done during war's, battles and conflicts. Yes more people needed in the military, don't lower the standards give incentives and encourage them more, use the carrot and stick, give them a incentive and if they look like they are dragging give them a boot up the arse.

Infantry aswell SDC 1 month pirbright then to ITC once u reach the standard

The diary idea goes back to ww1 the Germans highest command more than encouraged this it was a necessity. Further more communications should be encouraged not just from the top down but back up to the top. This in itself needs a outside observer to make sure this is happening up and down and up the chain of command.

I'm very old school, and 'back in my day' it was hard graft, aggressiveness and perseverance. My initial reaction to all of this new era shit was pretty negative, however, having seen it in action, I do think it's a better and more effective way of training soldiers. The new generations coming in are generally much better educated and have the brain power to apply if allowed. The traditional screaming-and-no-thinking training mentality was for a bygone generation who were generally less academically proficient. I hate to say it, but this new approach is better.
Yes I get what you are saying and some of it works and is good but I only left the army a couple years back and I’ve seen how it is and the discipline of soldiers is gone, probate soldiers don’t listen, have an attitude and can’t handle being told they are wrong it’s gone completely the wrong way and we now have a bunch of undisciplined soldiers who think they can do what they want and speak to seniors how ever they like
There is line between stress that stimulates growth on one hand, and hazing on the other. Soldier trainees need continuous high stress and a psychologically challenging game in order to begin to get used to the demands of actual warfare. If it is too easy, the shock they will get the first time they get shot at and everyone around them has a short fuze all the time, may result in them being ineffective. At the extreme end of hard training is deliberate hazing, which is just ritualistic abuse, and is corrosive to the trust and morale of the military, and it's very closet homo. None of that. But deliberately elevated levels of stress throughout must be maintained, or we risk losing the combat edge. Iron sharpens iron. If anything, the objective performance demands of the training program should provide most of the stress, and the personalities of the instructors shouldn't. A good instructor is tough and demanding, but cares also whether you succeed or not, and will not deliberately try to break a recruit.
At the end of the day if the shit hits the fan these individuals will be expected to go into combat, and when I look at the way they are being trained I can't help but wonder if they will be up to it, compare this with an 18 year old in world war 1 going over the top when the whistle blows, " sorry sarge can I miss this one out I didn't get my 8 hours last night".
Train a soldier to winge when uncomfortable,. Try and winge when tthe fan is getting turded.
I think they should have something where if you want to be in the army but can't pass the medical because how fat you are I think they should put them in a camp and they go through a fitness camp and food is controlled but if you drop out early you got pay them back x amount

I'd rather have a solid section of 'can do' & robust soldiers than two mediocre sections filling boots.

I would implement a new UK wide initiative to get more young people, to develop an adventurous spirit and a love for the outdoors - Camping 🏕 Bushcraft 🔥 Fishing, etc, like in Norway & Sweden.
Let's develop the Cubs, Scouts, and our Cadet Force, as most go into civi street...
Set up drone clubs in STEM school's/ college's, to design & build etc...

Re developing how children grow up; play outside etc is great too as it’s this generation that will be our future army, stop the technology, and get everyone back outdoors and fit again
