  • In the second episode of Season 2, Gary Gunas and Billy Rosenfield turn their attention to a handful of legendary performers: Judy Garland, Carol Channing, Jerry Lewis, Barbra Streisand, and… Madonna. Watch to see what Channing gifted Rosenfield, why Lewis insisted on a clarinet player, and more.
A general manager and producer (who worked on shows including Woman of the Year, La Cage aux Folles, and The Who’s Tommy) and a playwright and executive producer of cast albums (including Ragtime, Caroline, or Change, and The Last Five Years), Gunas and Rosenfield recently sat down with Andrew Hawkins and Jeff Marx in their London home to share their memories of the end of the Golden Age of Broadway.

I worked with Ms Channing in the 90s when she was promoting a jazz cd, Jazz Baby. Believe it or not it was hard to "book her on shows," but she was such a pro and such a good sport, that she allowed David Letterman writers to create a sketch in which she played ping pong with David in a very chic beaded dress that played up her gams! Hands down, during my Publicist career, she was my favorite! Funny, warm, a pro and had respect for people who "got her!" I prize my photo or two with her as much as anything!

You almost had a second Streisand story. Joe Layton conceived her first 3 tv specials on CBS (1965-66-67). Loved your anecdotes! PS: 4th story? Barbra took a struggling Madonna out to dinner in late 1986 after Madonna visited Barbra on the set of "Nuts" and Madonna was filming, "Who's That Girl," both for Warner Bros. It's been verified thru Streisand's assistant, who attended the dinner, that Madonna asked, "Who's paying for this?" When Barbra said, "I am," Madonna ordered lobster. True story. They later met on the SNL set in Feb. 1991 when Madonna was in a Coffee Talk skit and Barbra made a cameo appearance.

Judy singing Battle Hymn of The Republic was right after JFK died...and that's why she sang it. We "know" from the movie that she was a friend of his.

@peterdurkin1499 and charleswtriplett: Why do you believe these guys are a**holes? They are sharing stories about their lives, careers and the people and problems they encountered. But yes, why did you watch it if you hate it?? You’re both the a**holes and boring, not these two!!
