I grew up listening to the soft rock music of Bread in the 70's & had their albums. Love David Gates voice. He has one of the most soothing & mellow voices. They had so many hits such as "If", "Make It with You", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Everything I Own", "Diary" "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender" & "Aubrey". In 1978, Gates enjoyed success as a solo artist with the hit singles "Goodbye Girl" (from the movie The Goodbye Girl) & "Took The Last Train".

In my book. GUITAR man is Bread's best song. This song is one of those fantastic songs that does not get played on the radio anymore and yet in my book it has held up over the years unlike other songs that where hits years ago and now sound outdated and faded away. This is a solid Gold song. I have been waiting for someone to react to this song. Glad you liked it. You would have loved growing up in the 60's, 70's and early 80's. The music was special in its own way.

I’ve never hit play so quickly on one of your reactions! This is my favorite song by Bread. I love the haunting tone and the paradox implied by the lyrics, suggesting intense loneliness punctuated by momentary pleasure found on stage. I love everything about it. For some reason Glen Campbell always comes to mind when I hear this song. One of the greatest videos I’ve ever watched on CZcams is a clip of Bread singer David Gates performing a medley of Bread songs with Glen Campbell on Campbell’s variety show in the ‘70s. The combined talent of them both was just spellbinding. Also on CZcams is a clip of Glen Campbell performing the Bread song “If” on The Tonight Show. It’s so good it will bring you to tears.

A friend of mine, who is a fantastic chef, is carving the steaks now. Her brownies, which I already ate 1/2 the pan, are the best I have ever eaten. She just told me, less then 2 minutes ago, they are "Blue Ribbon", 1st place award winners for 5 straight years in some contest, in some European city, in some European country. I forgot where she said that was. My memory always takes a few hours break, on its own, after I eat her brownies. Can't figure out why. And my eyes also go instantaneously "bloodshot" after digesting them. Bring some Visine too.... and 2 bags of Doritos, some doughnuts, say 2 dozen assorted, a large box of Cap'n Crunch, 6 no make that a dozen Cadbury Caromellows, 6 Milky Ways, one of those round containers of pretzel rods made by Utz, or Snyders of Hanover, on second thought 1 of each, at least 4 containers of Häagen-Dazs ice-cream, and whatever else you think I would like. Get something for yourself too bro. OOOOH, maybe get a party pizza, oh no that's right she's making steak. She had to whack me over the head with a 3 inch Ribeye to jog my memory. I didn't even feel it, my entire body is numb. Maybe too much sugar or something.
Why do I eat, non-stop, anything within arms reach when I eat her brownies?

I appreciate Mr. Wilburn's reaction and comment with respect to drummers not being able to invoke the same emotions as some other instruments (guitar, piano, saxophone), but when you listen to this song (Guitar Man), the drums are crucial to the impact of the song. So, it's not just the guitar, or piano, or saxophone that invokes the emotions, but the combination of instruments.

So, it may not evoke emotion in the same way as the other instruments, yet the drums are capable of doing so much.
At a 'minimum' the drums are the heartbeat that flows through and joins us together (at least for that moment). Though some drums are created simply out of materials at hand, the complexity is created by the drummer(s).
A bit less philosophically, the drums get us moving together and play on emotions in unique ways. It can be exciting, transporting, melancholy, euphoric, and reminiscing. They are the backbone of the song. Many tunes can be played with just a guitar, but lose something without the drums. The interesting thing is that many instruments can evoke sadness, but drums almost always are uplifting, make you want to move, and provides the punctuation to the guitar's phrasing that drives home what mood was intended.

Allow me to "pile on" to my last comment. I served in the United States Air Force (USAF) for 30 years. I was not an aviator, i.e., a pilot, navigator, weapon systems officer, air combat controller, or flight surgeon. I was an engineer. In the USAF it's the aviators who engage the enemy directly, i.e., drop the bombs and shoot the bad guys out of the skies, not the engineers. The engineers are the ones who establish and sustain a platform that enables the aviators to do their job. The Air Force is a team, and it takes all parts of the team to accomplish the mission. Even though I was not an aviator, in every cell in my body and every aspect of my soul I am an airman, one dedicated to bringing airpower to bear for the defense of our nation and freedom. I bleed Air Force blue.

Did you hear about the guitarist who locked his keys in his car? It took him two hours to get the drummer out! Just kidding man (as a guitarist we're required to give drummers crap). But seriously, Great Reaction, man!

Larry Knechtel played the guitar solo on this and is the same guy that played the piano on Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water

Thanks for this. A companion piece to this might be "Guitar Man" by the great Jerry Reed. Entirely different kind of song, genre-wise, but a great, great example of country/rockabilly singing and guitar playing. Jerry was a legend as a musical entertainer (AMAZING guitar player) and a fun performer in several 1970s Burt Reynolds movies later on in his career! Consider checking him out. Thanks!

You need to check out Bread's "Our Lady Of Sorrow". Not one of their hits, but an album cut that is just haunting about a woman fighting addiction.

If you have ever watched mr Neil Pearts legendary drum solo video you will know drummers can touch people with the art they create with the craft. It’s a must watch! RIP Neil P of Rush

many drummers pick up piano. Then you got yourself and arsenal just with 2 instruments.

I would go with either "It Don't Matter to Me" or "Baby I'm-a Want You" for your next Bread reaction.
