He was reading her diary and mistakenly thought that her proclamations of finally finding her true love were about him. He even thought that her proclaimed love "for him" was odd because she never showed him that she loved him that much. As he read more of her diary he realized that the love she had always been waiting for was "someone else not me". He was not the love of her life but he still wished her and them both well.

Remember diaries? Nobody was supposed to read them. Now we put everything on Facebook and get mad if nobody reads it!
I remember diaries, very well. I got a 5-year diary for my 13th birthday. I wrote in it every day till my 18th birthday. My husband & I were both 18 when we got married. I had been 18 for 6 days, when we got married; so, my diary truly tells the story of the young adolescent 13 year old to the 18 year old bride. I'll be 65 next month, & I still have that diary. I also still write down things in journals; not everyday, but when there is something significant to me (both good & bad).

I grew up listening to the soft rock music of Bread in the 70's & had their albums. Love David Gates voice. He has one of the most soothing & mellow voices. They had so many hits such as "If", "Make It With You", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Everything I Own", "Lost Without Your Love", "It Don't Matter To Me", "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender", "Aubrey" etc. In 1978, Gates enjoyed success as a solo artist with the hit singles "Goodbye Girl" (from the movie The Goodbye Girl) & "Took The Last Train".

No, you got it just fine. It's just very sad; he thought she was talking about him, but she was talking about someone else. David Gates was brilliant at putting poignant words to beautiful music. If you ever think you wanna try something that really brings tears, "Everything I Own."

He’s been one of my favorite singers since I was 14 and discovered Bread. I absolutely would have loved to have seen them live.
I would play this over and over and over again when I went through breakups. For some reason it comforted me.
The reason she didn't show it was because it wasn’t for him. She didn't want to hurt him.
I love this song. His lyrics are so honest and vulnerable. I’m not saying it’s a true story, but you can’t write something like this without giving some kind of insight into your own heart. That’s why it resonates, even though most of us have never had this experience. Just the thought of it makes you feel for the narrator. I especially love the last line. Instead of whining about the other guy being a jerk or saying she wasn’t so great after all he graciously accepts that she has chosen someone else. He knows he will think of her throughout his life because he really was in love with her, but he’s decided that he will wish for the best for her and the other guy - who he assumes will be her husband because he can’t imagine any man not wanting to marry her.
I just have to say that for the first time in fifty years I realized that he continued to read the diary after he talked to her about it! What?! Maybe he didn’t have it with him at the time and continued reading it later.
Excellent, even though she didn't realize it, he was a better person than many.

Their song "Everything I Own" is a masterpiece. BTW, Bread was huge in the 70's. Back in the day this was considered Soft Rock, but now it is called Yacht Rock.
They made beautiful and poetic music. Iwould like to suggest that you listen to my favorite of all time, Chris Cornell. He was front man of three different groups plus he has some great solo material on his own. Thanks, R.I.P. SWEET MUSIC MAN.

If the diary was under the tree, he didn't find it. She left it there for him to see the reason she was no longer there. At the end, he wished them the best bc she obviously run away with the other guy. She's been cheating on him all that time that they were together.
