Why does the world remember this match as Beckham's free kick ? This was one of his best performance for England. One man show it was.
Having watched that game live on TV, I would have never remembered Beckham had taken not one, or two, or three but nine (9!) free kicks from the edge of our box. Most of them awarded for simple nudges. He was bound to score one of them.

Beckham was dreadful. He was meant to be the right winger and went AWOL. He was never where he was meant to be. If he'd stuck to his role, England could have won this by a cricket score.
I agree with you I was just watching the game, the final one was a joke that was called against the Greek player!! I do not know what the reff seen but I guess it was important for England to get through huge Market!!!

You're right, we were crap that day, but how many times have we been unlucky or been victims of a poor official? So we'll take the good results but poor performances at times, and what a free kick from Beckham to clinch our qualification.
Greece's only away point in this qualifying stage, we were awful but the papers were going on like we'd just won the world cup 😂
I remember watching this live, but only now watching these highlights do I realise how many free-kicks Beckham missed before netting in injury time.

One of Martin Tyler's best moments IMO, and arguably the game where Beckham's redemption arc (regarding the St. Etienne incident) was complete.
Actually the last full match I ever watched with my dad… even though he was jamaican, my brother and I being English, he was willing England on for the equaliser. When Beckham scored that goal, he was proud, to say the least. I’ll never forget this game and what it meant outside of football. Thanks, Beckham… RIP Pops

Why not? Back then Greece had a decent team as much strong as Croatia or Switzerland, that even that England couldn't beat at their ground for a very crucial game for them? 3 years later that Greek players proved that they were a really strong team.

The only picture that i want to keep from this game is this tiny girl before the game. We played much better & the ref whistled 9 fouls(only 2 were fouls from 40 meters distance) in 20 minutes out of penalty area.I was so pissed after the match.

Nearly 20 years ago, this game was so frustrating. Typical England qualification nonsense, I was revising for me GCSE's and my parents were watching the game in the Living Room, I was popping in and out. I'll never forget being in my room and Mum saying "Gav, I know you're angry but Beckham has got a free kick in a good position, probably the last kick of the game!" I was being a sulky teenager and ignored her lmfao.

I've never really understood why England make such a big deal of this game? They were already guaranteed a play-off before kick off. In Germany the attitude going into the Finland game was very laid back and they knew there was only a slim chance of meeting a team capable of beating them over a two leg play-off.
