Commercial archaeology (which is most of current UK archaeology) is where archaeologists, find and record any archaeology where construction in planned to take place. Usually this is done in a small time frame, but you do find exceptions. Any construction (at least in the UK) requires a archaeologist/heritage consultant to determine the archaeology that may be there and need excavating. However, they often also cover 'salvage archaeology' projects such as seahenge too. Where some event has uncovered archaeology suddenly and the archaeology needs to be recorded, excavated and thus preserved as quickly as possible.
This contrasts research archaeology, which usually takes places over various field seasons and often is not having to fit a deadline of construction. Thus more time allows for intensive methods of recording/excavation.
