Wow. Brings back memories. My late father, who retired USAF as a CMsgt, told us a story many years ago, when he was promoted from master to Sr. master sergeant during his first tour of VN. His commanding officer did a similar sort of thing at an NCO briefing, calling him up, and pretty much insinuating he was "not worthy of his rank", and while at attention, his CO proceeded to cut off his master stripes. He told us that after Korea, and being in Nam, it was the closest he ever came to ....
    well, making a mess.
And then his CO turned back, and said basically, you are " not worthy of a master sergeant rank, because you have just been promoted to Senior Master sergeant", and presented him with his new stripes.
3 years later, during his 2nd tour of Nam, he received his Chief stripes, and retired in 72 as top sergeant, as well as being a bronze star recipient.
Proud of what he was, what he did, and we all miss him, and my mom as well, very much.

I remembered getting step promoted. The General visited me in my cubicle and told me to go home because I am out uniform, then he slapped a one rank higher stripes on both upper arms. I went home and told my wife to replace the stripes on my uniform because it is worn out (I purposely ripped it a little bit). She was sewing it and suddenly, she told me "You bought the wrong stripes". Then, I told her I am step-promoted that day.

Good for him! It's nice to see that the Air Force STEP program is being used in the manner for which it was designed. I was active duty Air Force when the STEP program came out, and my base had ONE stripe authorized - and it went to the Base Commander's female secretary. I lost all respect for the program at that moment, and it took a very long time for me to get it back. But I did. At my last duty station before I retired, our Security Police Kennelmaster was a TSgt who had been running the Kennels for about six months after the previous Kennelmaster had retired, and that billet was for a Master Sergeant. He did a fantastic job, and one day when we had Commander's Call the Wing Commander showed up and presented him with a set of Master Sergeant stripes. And they were well deserved, too!

A “step promotion” is a very big deal. A great honor and takes years of hard work. Something I never could have done in my career in the GREAT USAF!!!! As an Airmen in active duty, I was always just shy of standing in the First Sgt’s office. With the direction of great leadership and NCOs, at the end of my career I was the First Sgt. It’s never too late to stand behind a Airmen who needs it. Whether in trouble or in recognition, always stand behind your Airmen.

I put in a STEP promotion package for one of my SSgt's. The day we found out...the wing queen flew in and had the whole group (about 400+) in the maintenance bay. She didn't call him up...she called me up and chewed my ass (in fun) about not keeping my troop in proper uniform. Then she called him up and stepped him to TSgt. The roar and cheers were deafening. And we all did pushups with the added ones for the SECDEF, CASF, and President. Good times. Getting STEP'ed is a huge deal.

As a six year enlistee, I was given E-3 at the end of basic training, at Lackland. At my tech school, I was offered rope school, and a green rope. They liked giving A1C's ropes back then. This was 46 years ago. I turned them down. 12 years later, I was an instructor at Chanute AFB, as a Master Sergeant, and it was my turn to monitor a massive dorm for a week, on the overnight shift. The requirement was for an E-6, or higher, to be in the building at all times. There was one red rope, A1C Steele, prior Army, and in his late 20's, was just ... savage in how he treated his fellow airmen. I ran across him, and he disrespected me. Big mistake. I had six stripes, he had two. I got him fired the next day, when I spoke to the Captain in charge of the student squadron. For the rest of that week, it was free pizza for MSgt Svitak! ... and a lesson learned in how to treat people.

Look at that, sitting down at a promotion ceremony rather than having people fall out from heat stroke or locking knees. What a novel idea...

It's called "tacking 'em on". While in the AF, I witnessed three STEP promotions -- including one where the honoree refused.

"Tacking on a crow" is no longer allowed in the Navy. Considered "hazing," don't ya know. Another time-honored tradition down the shitter....

People commenting about the “what do you mean”. Crew chiefs are some of the bluntest peeps in the AF. Personally I would’ve thrown a “ma’am” on there.

Golden Point - All can wear anything they like and no need for a uniform as long as they identify themselves in some way so that they can be easily approached for help or assistance ie serves the intended purpose of the uniform and all at Emmy's Expense ( IMF ) ( Azp )

Like many, “whadda ya mean?” To an O-6 was never ever, ever a valid reply when I was in. However, given the circumstances, the Colonel let it slide. In the normal line of duty, I don’t know if she would be as lenient. But, congrats on your advancement!

I did as well...and as a six year enlistee, got two stripes in basic...and sewed on SrA in 21 months. Made SSgt the first year I tested, on B cycle, and sewed on SSgt before my 21st birthday. I may well have been the youngest SSgt in the Air Force at that time. Took me four shots to make TSgt though. Sewed that on at age 26.

I think the TSgt was shocked to be called out by his CO, but good point. Was thinking, hang on, where's the excuse me "Mam"? He was replying to his CO who is top brass.

Everyone in the comments getting on him about the "what do you mean" line, this is why you never got props like this before. Being so quick to attack someone else's success is an obvious sign you're lacking in the success department.
