We called it pinning on the stripes and it could get brutal. Promotion to corporal included pinning on stripes as well as the knee to the thigh for earning your blood stripe (red stripe down the dress blue trousers of Marine NCOs).
Some guys in my platoon just got foreign jump wings, and the German Jumpmasters SLAMMED those wings into their chests. Good shit. Wish i coulda gotten mine.
Boo Boo -- You know that is a very good question. In my day Women Marines never stood guard mount or for inspection with the men. There were no women in our Marine infantry company. I did see Women Marines standing inspection as a sperate unit. They worked in the headquarters company at the battalion headquarters but you would never see them carrying a rifle or standing inspection with the men. I guess the same kind of pinning ceremony was done at the WM barracks but only by the women. Things are different now and so a Marine who recently served might be a better source
I got my Senior Airman stripes back in 2001, before 9/11, and they got a perfect shot of my supervisor and commander punching my arms in unison. Followed up by all the other punches I got throughout the day, I was bruised by the next morning. Long time ago, now. Things are different. But also the same, love it!
I got promoted to E-7, but the 1st Sgt came into my office and asked me what the hell I had done to get the Col all pissed off. Mind you, I had tested months before and forgot all about the promotions. I was busy as shit getting Logistics stuff done. Scared the living shit out of mne when the Col walked into my office and stared at me and then handed me my new stripes.
Got a Similar situation when i took care of a Dumpsterfire (those realy big Dumpsters.. shit was melting the metal already) in my freetime. Was Instructor for Shipsafety (fire and Leakage prevention in the german navy) at that point. noticed my the Two First Sgt.'s didnt know what to do so i started barking orders to them while taking care of it myself. next day my First Sgt told me the Barracks Commander wants to have a word with me. he played the "im boiling with anger" card so good i almost shat myself. Command played along and showed me the Daylie Order Print for our Barracks, namely honouring me for going managing the situation so well. focking conts got me real good with that one.

That's what the sergeant was for, since I wasn't expected to know much outside of said laptop and my languages. The military was badly funded and hopelessly overstretched with various peacekeeping missions. Other sad examples involve people being told to burn our trash in the burnpits, but nog being given any protective gear while god-knows-what goes up in smoke. He turned around to go back to his chair went passed me again and suddenly turned around and said "Oh yeah, these are for you. The Chief was laughing like crazy. Butthead! :-)
not military but I was in JROTC in high school and in the spring of my senior year at the start of the semester the instructor calls each of us in turn into his office to review our ribbons and ranks. when it was my turn i went into his office. as he is going through the information he gets to my rank and says that i was an E-5 sergeant(my high school has army JROTC). due to a mix-up on my end of who was supposed to be in uniform that week, i had worn my uniform to school that day and had corporal stripes on at that time. so i stopped him and said "sir, there must be a mistake. I'm a corporal. I have it right here(pointing to my insignia.)" he then tells me again. "you're a sergeant. I promoted you." i was completely in shock at that moment. I had taken the promotion test about 1 1/2 months earlier and knew i had passed but usually we had promotions the week after the test was administered and i had not been promoted then, so to be promoted at that time took me completely by surprise.

This brought a tear to my eye. I was never in the military, but my father was a former P51 Mustang pilot in WWII----this was what our interaction was like when I was a kid and was in trouble. The rest of the time it was more of a 'stand at ease' kind of thing... :)
Priceless! I bet he thought the worst. We call them in field promotions (Army). To get one based on integrity and skill to solve a problem that could have endangered his crewmates is sweet. In our Navy we had a case where the Coxwain on the bridge of a frigate passed out in the middle of a very difficult manouvre in 30' seas. He had complained of nausia but did not want to risk the ship. The ship was hit by a large wave and all on the bridge were thrown to the deck. Before anyone could blink an eye a comms rating dived across the bridge and caught his head before it hit the deck. She (yes she) then manned the wheel and applied for more revs to turn the ship along the swell and then into the following sea bow on, this saving the ship and crew from a disaster. The Commander was summoned by the First Officer as he was off watch. He was told what happened and the tape from the CCTV showed it all. The Commander ordered her to stay on the wheel and he placed a sat call to Operations in Melbourne reporting the incident. 10 minutes later he returned and told the rating she was promoted to Leading Seaman (Coxwain) and to stay at the wheel as her norman duty. She was awarded the Navy Bravery Medal back at base.
As anyone who has served in the military will agree, being promoted & gaining that extra bit of respect, is the best feeling ever! This was a great moment in his life that he will remember always. Well done TSgt!
Its far better in the British army where we actually get promoted on hard work and merit. Not every 5 minutes based on time like the US. Just like their medals, they get for farting, we EARN ours.

As A Naval Aviation Air Wing Veteran. It was always a great and heart moving emotional pleasure, watching an aviator or support crew member advance in rating. I served several tours onboard two of the finest aircraft carriers that are now decommissioned. Pilots were tested hard and the competition was fierce to make rank. It was a great time and moment in those briefing rooms and flight hangar. Roger that! Call the ball!

Today I learned promotion hazing between branches is slightly different. In the Army I had one of the prongs of the insignia break off into my skin when it was pounded into my collar. Had to pull it out with a gerber. Good times.
Got to participate in something like this back in the 80s. Was visiting a Chief that was my buddy's dad while we were on leave in the area. Sitting in his office in civvies, he told us to just sit and look serious. A young enlisted troop was ushered in, and the Chief went through some papers on his desk, without looking up. When he did, he let out a sigh, greeted the airman, and introduced my buddy and me as agents with OSI, that had brought a serious matter to his attention, then proceeded to read the kid his rights. He then asked the kid if he knew what it was about, and the kid, his eyes as big as dinner plated, and by this time confused and scared as hell, quietly said he didn't. The Chief then handed him a piece of paper, telling him to read it and give his response. It was the order promoting the kid to Senior Airman. He looked up, at all three of us smiling at him, and we all busted out laughing.

My dad was Royal Australian Air Force and I remember a number of times when he was promoted. Sergeant to Flight Sergeant. Big party! Then we went to America for a few years, he was sent to the Australian Embassy in Washington D.C and we stayed a few years. Then promoted to Warrant Officer. The highest an enlisted man could achieve. Even bigger party!
After getting promoted to SSgt, I continued to work closely with my crew on whatever we were assigned to for the shift. One day, the Asst. Chief (we were fire dept.) saw me doing whatever it was I wasn't supposed to be doing and he explained how I was now a supervisor and expected to supervise the work, not participate. His quote to me was, "I'll make a lazy basterd out of you yet!"
I remember the 1st Sgt coming into my office while I was a Tsgt. He looked so serious saying the Commander was pissed and I was getting a warning to tell the Commander the truth when he comes into my office. In comes the Commander, grilling me about something. I was sweating bullets and damn near passed out when he handed me the Msgt stripes. I knew I had studied hard for that promotion but I was clueless as to the time of year when the stripes came out. They did that to about 5 of us in the building that day.
I simply LOVE the military! The only downside is that you are unable to see your family that often, especially when you have a long assignment abroad. But then again, you colleagues could be considered your 'family' as well as this video shows. LOVE the bond they all have. I just wanna say thank you to ALL men and women of the military across the globe for their sacrifices and service they provide to protect and keep the peace in their respective countries.
I had a LT. Colonel tell me years ago "Remember, a pat on the back is only 18 inches from a kick in the ass." That was 35 years ago and I've never forgotten his words to me that day.
That's awesome and I don't think he'll ever forget that moment. I once had a civilian boss do something like that to me right before he gave me one of the biggest raises I've received in my entire career.
GEN George Patton liked to tease the soldiers he was field promoting. He would ask their name and rank. After the reply, Patton would say, "You were so scared about meeting me that you forgot your rank. You aren't an X, you are an X+."
It was his Squadron Commander which typically holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. The others in the room would have been the Admin OIC, his Branch OIC, his First Sargent. his Branch NCOIC and his Flight Chief.
One of my Skippers actually had a rug in front of his desk that you stood on. Sometimes for a good talk, often for a one way conversation, (he talks you listen).
This was great! Reading all these comments reminds me of some silly facebook thing saying "what 3 words would you say to your 20 year old self"? My reply....."Join the Military" For 12 years I worked alongside a group that included every branch of the service. That was the best job I ever had. Just amazing folks. Even today, my job is calling them about problems with their badging systems. We supply all the gear for their ID cards. Calling overseas and helping soldiers get their systems running right. It's a privilege to help in even this small capacity. I love our Military, and I humbly thank you all for your service! God bless you, and keep you safe.
Excellent performance by the commander as well as the recipient of the promotion you deserve every bit of the medal pinned on your chest- Hope you grant this form of promotions to many more deserving servicemen and women. That was funny! Made him sweat! Hahahahaha! When I was promoted to SP4 (E-4) in the Army, someone had screwed up and I hadn’t even been promoted to PFC (E-3) yet. So when my promotion finally came through everyone at my Battery HQ was surprised because both sets of orders came at the same time. It turns out that I had been put in for a rapid promotion by my Battalion Commander! So I wasn’t aware of the promotion and showed up to work at a Command Post Exercise we were having. I walked in and my team leader looked at me and said that I was out of uniform and had me drop for push-ups! I did 50 and he had me recover. He handed me the PFC ranks and as I was about to put them on he said that I was still out of uniform! Now I was so happy with the PFC promotion that I thought maybe I was actually missing something of my uniform but before I could check it out he dropped me again! I cranked out about 25 push-ups and he told me to recover. As I got up everyone was laughing, about 50-70 people watching me! I laughed too although I didn’t know why. Then our Battery Commander stepped up and presented me with my SP4 ranks! I was shocked and speechless! Everyone was laughing and congratulating me. Those were my best two promotions ever. Even better than my Sgt (E-5) promotion. Hahahahaha.
Even knowing he was about to be promoted, my heart sank a couple times as if he'd be "fired" /demoted (hey, I'm a civilian). Awesome job sir! And more importantly - thank you for your service.

When I was promoted to E4 with waver. I had 2 MPs show up and I was handcuffed and told CID was going to talk to me. I was scared as shit. My whole company was waiting behind a building where the MP cars were waiting. Before I got into the MP cars my company came racing out laughing. I then knew something was up. I was promoted and all of the E3 and under were told to stand by. My battalion commmader yelled at all of the E3 for not getting their licenses and working as hard as me. They all got smoked for 20 mins while I got to watch at attention lol
I had something similar to me happen when I was in the Army. I was a fairly new E-5 (Sergeant) and my platoon Sergeant pulled me aside and said I recently pissed hot when we had our unit urine test. I, of course, got really freaked out and told him that wasn't possible. He went on for a couple more minutes while I tried to tell him I was innocent. He then said, I'm just fucking with you. I want you to be our new squad leader which was typically reserved for E-6 (Staff Sergeant).
Congrats. I have been out for years but remember when I got TSgt. Got E6 then got out of the military shortly after. I miss the USMIL but not the pay. Not sure if it’s still the same but I remember singing “Off we go, into the wild blue yonder.....” at 5am every morning during basic.
Must be something new, when I was promoted to Signalman 2nd Class. The word was out that the promotion list was posted, I went to personnel and looked at the list and saw I was promoted, went to ships store and bought my cap badge and new sleeve insignia. Nothing was said by anyone not even the Division Chief or Officer. I do not think they even realized it. This was 1961 aboard ship

I had several officers (including my own) tell me that i worked harder than most of the NCOs in my unit and that i deserved to be one, yet none would put their money where their mouths were and promote me. My section chief handed me my E4 stripes and said have these on your uniform at the one o'clock work formation. You are now a Spec 4, soldier! My reply was aww shit, do I have to? So I crazy glued them on my sleeves.
Serving in the RAF I got a call at home to come in early as the boss wanted to see me. So many thoughts going through my mind even though I's told not to worry. Get into work taken in to the boss's office to be told 'There aren't many perks to my rank (he was a Sqn Ldr, Major is the equivalent in US) But this is the best I've done. You're promoted to sergeant and you deserve it' Walk out in a daze and quietly had a coffee letting the shock set in. I'd only got my corporal up 4 years before and this was unheard of. Admin sergeant came in and said, 'Have you all met the new sergeant then?' opinion split between how the fuck did he get that? to nice one well done'

not military but I was in JROTC in high school and in the spring of my senior year at the start of the semester the instructor calls each of us in turn into his office to review our ribbons and ranks. when it was my turn i went into his office. as he is going through the information he gets to my rank and says that i was an E-5 sergeant(my high school has army JROTC). due to a mix-up on my end of who was supposed to be in uniform that week, i had worn my uniform to school that day and had corporal stripes on at that time. so i stopped him and said "sir, there must be a mistake. I'm a corporal. I have it right here(pointing to my insignia.)" he then tells me again. "you're a sergeant. I promoted you." i was completely in shock at that moment. I had taken the promotion test about 1 1/2 months earlier and knew i had passed but usually we had promotions the week after the test was administered and i had not been promoted then, so to be promoted at that time took me completely by surprise.

This brought a tear to my eye. I was never in the military, but my father was a former P51 Mustang pilot in WWII----this was what our interaction was like when I was a kid and was in trouble. The rest of the time it was more of a 'stand at ease' kind of thing... :)

Priceless! I bet he thought the worst. We call them in field promotions (Army). To get one based on integrity and skill to solve a problem that could have endangered his crewmates is sweet. In our Navy we had a case where the Coxwain on the bridge of a frigate passed out in the middle of a very difficult manouvre in 30' seas. He had complained of nausia but did not want to risk the ship. The ship was hit by a large wave and all on the bridge were thrown to the deck. Before anyone could blink an eye a comms rating dived across the bridge and caught his head before it hit the deck. She (yes she) then manned the wheel and applied for more revs to turn the ship along the swell and then into the following sea bow on, this saving the ship and crew from a disaster. The Commander was summoned by the First Officer as he was off watch. He was told what happened and the tape from the CCTV showed it all. The Commander ordered her to stay on the wheel and he placed a sat call to Operations in Melbourne reporting the incident. 10 minutes later he returned and told the rating she was promoted to Leading Seaman (Coxwain) and to stay at the wheel as her norman duty. She was awarded the Navy Bravery Medal back at base.

As A Naval Aviation Air Wing Veteran. It was always a great and heart moving emotional pleasure, watching an aviator or support crew member advance in rating. I served several tours onboard two of the finest aircraft carriers that are now decommissioned. Pilots were tested hard and the competition was fierce to make rank. It was a great time and moment in those briefing rooms and flight hangar.

Today I learned promotion hazing between branches is slightly different. In the Army I had one of the prongs of the insignia break off into my skin when it was pounded into my collar. Had to pull it out with a gerber. Good times.
Tom LaRose Navy enlisted tradition is to punch the rank or "tack the crow" I was purple for a month each time.
I had to pry my Sargent rank out of my collar bone, but the blood stain was worth and pain for a week. I worked hard to get/earn my stripes 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Got to participate in something like this back in the 80s. Was visiting a Chief that was my buddy's dad while we were on leave in the area. Sitting in his office in civvies, he told us to just sit and look serious. A young enlisted troop was ushered in, and the Chief went through some papers on his desk, without looking up. When he did, he let out a sigh, greeted the airman, and introduced my buddy and me as agents with OSI, that had brought a serious matter to his attention, then proceeded to read the kid his rights. He then asked the kid if he knew what it was about, and the kid, his eyes as big as dinner plated, and by this time confused and scared as hell, quietly said he didn't. The Chief then handed him a piece of paper, telling him to read it and give his response. It was the order promoting the kid to Senior Airman.
He looked up, at all three of us smiling at him, and we all busted out laughing.

...promoted to Ssgt, after being accused of stealing a weapon from the armoury, which I had access to. The MP's, RSM ( highest ranking NCO in a Commonwealth country) and the CO, were all in on it. When my conduct sheet was produced, presto, a Ssgt brassard fell out. Kiwi tankies have a sense of humour too..!

My dad was Royal Australian Air Force and I remember a number of times when he was promoted. Sergeant to Flight Sergeant. Big party! Then we went to America for a few years, he was sent to the Australian Embassy in Washington D.C and we stayed a few years. Then promoted to Warrant Officer. The highest an enlisted man could achieve. Even bigger party!

After getting promoted to SSgt, I continued to work closely with my crew on whatever we were assigned to for the shift. One day, the Asst. Chief (we were fire dept.) saw me doing whatever it was I wasn't supposed to be doing and he explained how I was now a supervisor and expected to supervise the work, not participate. His quote to me was, "I'll make a lazy basterd out of you yet!"

I remember the 1st Sgt coming into my office while I was a Tsgt. He looked so serious saying the Commander was pissed and I was getting a warning to tell the Commander the truth when he comes into my office. In comes the Commander, grilling me about something. I was sweating bullets and damn near passed out when he handed me the Msgt stripes. I knew I had studied hard for that promotion but I was clueless as to the time of year when the stripes came out. They did that to about 5 of us in the building that day.

I simply LOVE the military! The only downside is that you are unable to see your family that often, especially when you have a long assignment abroad. But then again, you colleagues could be considered your 'family' as well as this video shows. LOVE the bond they all have. I just wanna say thank you to ALL men and women of the military across the globe for their sacrifices and service they provide to protect and keep the peace in their respective countries.
I had a LT. Colonel tell me years ago "Remember, a pat on the back is only 18 inches from a kick in the ass." That was 35 years ago and I've never forgotten his words to me that day.
That's awesome and I don't think he'll ever forget that moment. I once had a civilian boss do something like that to me right before he gave me one of the biggest raises I've received in my entire career.

It was his Squadron Commander which typically holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. The others in the room would have been the Admin OIC, his Branch OIC, his First Sargent. his Branch NCOIC and his Flight Chief.

For 12 years I worked alongside a group that included every branch of the service. That was the best job I ever had. Just amazing folks. Even today, my job is calling them about problems with their badging systems. We supply all the gear for their ID cards. Calling overseas and helping soldiers get their systems running right. It's a privilege to help in even this small capacity.
I love our Military, and I humbly thank you all for your service! God bless you, and keep you safe.
Excellent performance by the commander as well as the recipient of the promotion you deserve every bit of the medal pinned on your chest- Hope you grant this form of promotions to many more deserving servicemen and women. That was funny! Made him sweat! Hahahahaha! When I was promoted to SP4 (E-4) in the Army, someone had screwed up and I hadn’t even been promoted to PFC (E-3) yet. So when my promotion finally came through everyone at my Battery HQ was surprised because both sets of orders came at the same time. It turns out that I had been put in for a rapid promotion by my Battalion Commander! So I wasn’t aware of the promotion and showed up to work at a Command Post Exercise we were having. I walked in and my team leader looked at me and said that I was out of uniform and had me drop for push-ups! I did 50 and he had me recover. He handed me the PFC ranks and as I was about to put them on he said that I was still out of uniform! Now I was so happy with the PFC promotion that I thought maybe I was actually missing something of my uniform but before I could check it out he dropped me again! I cranked out about 25 push-ups and he told me to recover. As I got up everyone was laughing, about 50-70 people watching me! I laughed too although I didn’t know why. Then our Battery Commander stepped up and presented me with my SP4 ranks! I was shocked and speechless! Everyone was laughing and congratulating me. Those were my best two promotions ever. Even better than my Sgt (E-5) promotion. Hahahahaha.

Great promo. I particularly liked the CO being so tough, and commanding respect, then changing to excellent humour and laughing with his people.
When I was promoted to E4 with waver. I had 2 MPs show up and I was handcuffed and told CID was going to talk to me. I was scared as shit. My whole company was waiting behind a building where the MP cars were waiting. Before I got into the MP cars my company came racing out laughing. I then knew something was up. I was promoted and all of the E3 and under were told to stand by. My battalion commmader yelled at all of the E3 for not getting their licenses and working as hard as me. They all got smoked for 20 mins while I got to watch at attention lol
I had something similar to me happen when I was in the Army. I was a fairly new E-5 (Sergeant) and my platoon Sergeant pulled me aside and said I recently pissed hot when we had our unit urine test. I, of course, got really freaked out and told him that wasn't possible. He went on for a couple more minutes while I tried to tell him I was innocent. He then said, I'm just fucking with you. I want you to be our new squad leader which was typically reserved for E-6 (Staff Sergeant).

Must be something new, when I was promoted to Signalman 2nd Class. The word was out that the promotion list was posted, I went to personnel and looked at the list and saw I was promoted, went to ships store and bought my cap badge and new sleeve insignia. Nothing was said by anyone not even the Division Chief or Officer. I do not think they even realized it. This was 1961 aboard ship

I had several officers (including my own) tell me that i worked harder than most of the NCOs in my unit and that i deserved to be one, yet none would put their money where their mouths were and promote me. Really aggravated me because it would have saved my career instead of separating 14yrs earlier than i planned

Serving in the RAF I got a call at home to come in early as the boss wanted to see me. So many thoughts going through my mind even though I's told not to worry. Get into work taken in to the boss's office to be told 'There aren't many perks to my rank (he was a Sqn Ldr, Major is the equivalent in US) But this is the best I've done. You're promoted to sergeant and you deserve it' Walk out in a daze and quietly had a coffee letting the shock set in. I'd only got my corporal up 4 years before and this was unheard of. Admin sergeant came in and said, 'Have you all met the new sergeant then?' opinion split between how the fuck did he get that? to nice one well done'
