You know, a historically inaccurate movie used to make PT Barnum look good and trick people into spending money is exactly the the kind of thing Barnum would do. So, in a way, this movie really does capture his spirit.
in a way, you've got a point
If he was alive, he'd be singing its praises and make money off the success. Love this movie
Sounds like justification of being fooled. Well, that robber captured the spirit of taking all my things.
I mean, he was massively antislavery, so that's a point in his favour.
@@lukasnel4828 Yet he bought a slave and then sold tickets to her autopsy. Guess you missed that part.
From a boy who wants a top hat, to a man who owns all the top hats.
YESSSSSS LOL
*M'Logan*
I laughed at "noted tophat enthusiast"
Stonks
That is what I aspire to one day. Owning all the top hats. All of them.
"Noted top hat enthusiast"
Don't call me out like this man 😳
"Instead of selling kids candy, he's selling kids tickets to laugh at the oompa loompas" omfg😂😂
Road to 666
Had me rolling on the floor 🤣😂
Especially because the Oompa Loompas were originally black skinned.
And still kills fewer kids than Wonka
Why does everyone keep overlooking the fact that the "opera" singer does NOT sing opera?
She sounds more like Florence + the Machine.
I think this is a Moulin Rouge thing where they were going for an updated version of the emotional impact the song would have had to a person from that time.
Thank you!!!
Miriam Cuquerella Because it’s a musical! What we hear her sing in the movie is What she feels, not What she really sings
Literally all the things he pointed out in the video was what I was thinking during the movie. Including your comment. Was I the only one who didn’t like this movie? Plot was too fast and not enough character development. Didn’t even bother learning half the characters names. I only kept watching for the songs
That bothered me SO MUCH! Her awful pop singing totally took me out of the movie!
The greatest showman was just about wolvierine getting the first band of mutants together
callum McDonald the greatest mutans
Lol
callum McDonald *shook*
Oh my god...😱😱😱
callum McDonald trueeee
"The these two people didn't even exist song", Hahahahaha!
Well actually Zac Efron's character might be partly based on a real businness partner Barnum had at some point, correct me if I'm wrong...
@@ELisa-qf2mw He was actually kind of a mix of a bunch of people, mainly Bailey and with a bit of General Tom Thumb (from a Documentary I saw, apparently Tom was an actual friend to Barnum, he made him America's first celebrity and after they went their separate ways he continued to tour America and helped Barnum when his Museum Burned, like Efron does in the last bit of the movie).
Now that I think about it, They probably could have been more historically acurate and still kept Barnum sympathetic had they focused on his relationship with Tom Thumb but I guess there ain't a lot of little people who can sing like Zac Efron.
@Lego Universe that's why it's called a Barnum and Bailey circus

Fun fact: In Barnum’s original “murder” museum. He had a sign that said “This way to the Griffith.” However once you went through that door you were outside the building, and the only way back in was buying another ticket. Basically the first example of clickbait.😂😂😂😂
The sign said "this way to the egress", essentially meaning the exit, which most people didn't know, they thought it was a sign pointing to another exhibit. The reason for this was he noticed people were lingering in the museum for too long, which was diminishing returns due to the fact more people could not fit in... definitely a problem if they're spending the entire day in the museum. That isn't to say it was a nice thing to do, but it technically wasn't false advertising. It was indeed the exit.
Jenna Portenlanger Ah yes I knew it wasn’t the Griffith but it was just my best guess cause I didn’t remember the actual creature.
The first example of clickbait was greenland
Sneaky Ben this way to the egress is what the term above the door was
"There's a sucker born every minute" PT Barnum.
PS: yes I know there's no record to support that quote.
I still dont quite get why they decided to portray P.T. Barnum as mister nice guy instead of just....making up a fictional character and focusing the story around that if they neglected historical accuracy anyway
Because big budget movies only green light stuff that's an adaptation or based on a true stories these days. Original screenplays are often seen as too big of a risk because there isn't a built in fanbase to guarantee ticket sales.
Nathan's Art Project I doubt PT Barnum had a fan base, or at least one big enough to guarantee good ticket sales...
Jacky J Because it's an adaptation of Broadway musical.
Christian Changer Nope
Agreed, but it's still based on something that people have heard of, making it more familiar, which means they don't have to try as hard to sell it. It's the difference between people being like "Oh it's a musical about PT Barnum" and "Circus movie musical." The first generates more recognition in the audience.
Not saying it always makes sense, I agree this should've been a completely original story, I'm just saying that's how studio execs think.
"Catchy hits just begging for an overly sincere CZcams cover video!"

@@aloevera3317 you should watch Les Miserables if you want Les Miserables
I knew too much about PT prior to the movie to ever watch. I can’t separate the human from the character. It just made me think of all the animals and people who never recovered from his cruelty.
I fell asleep halfway through but you’re right, SO entertaining
Just like, Braveheart, 300, Gladiator, Anastasia, and Pocahontas.
Hugh Jackman is such a great actor. From Logan to The Greatest Showman and he can pull it off! Mad respect for that man!
Nelson Hobbs he was a singer before acting tho
Kekoa US yeah! I’m just talking about the acting roles because they’re both so different, I just think it’s super impressive that he can pull them both off 😁
My Dad knew him in high school, they were both in debating
Nelson Hobbs ii
Kekoa US He was a PE teacher before that, relevant for Wolverine
First of all this is absolutely the best honest trailer I've seen in years. Second, I loved this movie and I think the choice of musical is a dead giveaway they didn't aim for accuracy, as is the fact they didn't go with "based on true story" or any other claim it was based on real persons. Most people will probably watch it totally unaware that it is based on the life of a real man.
One year late but THANK YOU this movie wasn't meant to be accurate so why complain that it's not?
@@BlueStar4040 Because why do they use real people if they don't want it to be accurate?
I think most people go into it knowing who P.T Barnum is
@@mr.generic5100 No they don't. Maybe about 60% of the English-speaking audience, but the world's a big place you know?
Im one of the "most people"
I was horrified by this honest trailer 😂😂😂💔
The new songs were hilarious!! Just one detail though, Zendaya DID do her own stunts
actually if you google it, it says that the directors wanted her to do AS MANY STUNTS AS POSSIBLE, meaning she did not do all of her own stunts.
i believe she did them all except the spinny one from the ceiling
Lol, ppl just wants to believe desperately.
@@amberm6991 exactly
I’ve watched several interviews and she says they’re her. 🤷♀️ Idk I’d we’ll ever really know for sure.
How you guys changed the songs was hilarious! The lyrics were on point. Great Honest Trailer!
I thought it was too much
Simon James look this is incredible czcams.com/video/rrIuNyOXzbI/video.html
They weren’t on point, they were Family Guy- style mean-spirited slander for a man that, as far as I can tell when I looked him up, was more good than bad.
Thread Bomb
Nope, he later became a politician and argued in congress against slavery of black people, saying that people of all colors, shapes, and varieties are created in the image of God and died for by Christ. You can look this up.
Like every human he had his negative traits too, but I think the “Barnum was evil because he exploited people for gain” is an unrealistically 21st century perspective.
Great Trailer, isnt it?
I think most of us already knew this film is not historical accurate
Lavenia Hewes that’s sad...but it’s funny too lol
I thought it wasn’t very historically accurate because I don’t think people just broke into song in the late 1800s
There are some people that get quite iffy when films don't accurately represent historical events they are based on (Pocahontas is a good example)
rewer True!!
Dan Johnson if you watch The New World it’s almost accurate
Is anyone gonna acknowledge the amazing singing voice of the woman who sang "Never in Love"? No? Okay.
I JUST left a comment about that haha! I know, right?! I just kept going back to that part because damg, you could actually feel that voice doing things with your emotions it was amazing. I agree with you, Saarika. 100% agree.
The actress is not actually singing, that amazing voice is actually from Lauren Allred.
honestly, this was one of the best Honest Trailers I've ever watched...the historical facts over the actual music just brings it home.
I knew this film wasn't historically accurate going into it, but I still loved it.
Zac Efron's character is actually partially based on James Bailey, the "Bailey" in Barnum & Bailey Circus. Zendaya's character is totally fictional though.
So when did Bailey really make an appearance in his circus? (not in the movie)
Bailey actually came into the circus alot after Philip (zac) I mean he was based of Bailey but their not the same character
I don't think a single person over the age of 8 thought this movie was intended to be historically accurate.
You give to much credit to p[eople over the age of 8
Spring tiiiiiime with Hitleeeer in Germannnnnny
Andrew Wood Comparing Barnum to Hitler is kind of silly. Even some of the things in this video are twisted to make him look worse. For instance, when he got into politics, he was actually very outspoken and active against slavery. I'm not saying he was perfect, and I'm not even saying he was good. Neither of us probably know the answer to that question, at least not based on a musical and a comedy CZcams video.

I had no idea it was based on a real person lol
Try the internet. It’s full of information.
Only in the vaguest of ways. Kind of like how Lion King was based on a real lion because there are lions.
It's not. They are using his name, but the real PT Barnum was HORRIBLE. I wish they would have just claimed that they invented a character.
@@jsworpin not everyone is American, Barnum isn't well known AT ALL in a lot of countries
@@user-es7ui5mc1m I’m not American but have heard of PT Barnum, he is very famous. Regardless my suggestion was to use the internet to look him up, lots of information available even to those of us outside of America.
Say what you will, you can't argue with this soundtrack
Great soundtrack, average movie but great soundtrack still
You really can't
@@marielgracerussaneeclavea2865 almost same can be said for the hobbit trilogy. actually i would say in that case the hobbit trilogy itself is below average but the soundtrack for all 3 films were on point.
I can. Generic copy-paste pop music that doesn't move the plot forward, doesn't utilize in world characters singing abilities or any creative inspiration of the time period its "representing". It is soulless cash grab songs. Only one, maybe, two songs are directly connected lyrically. They are placed in awkward spots of the story sometimes. This is Me, should have been a big climactic song towards the end, when they finally stand up for themselves. But literally, the next scene, Barnum is ignoring her. Honestly, this was a cheap cash grab the real P.T. Barnum would've been proud of. And that isn't necessarily a good thing.
I personally loved the visuals, appreciated the music, did my research into the characters, and decided to just enjoy the movie for pure entertainment, because even though it is not historical in any way, I still found a fair bit of entertainment value in it.
same
A Murry all that does is gaslight people to romanticize horrible people for profit and suckers like you people fall for it each and every time.
They never said it was going to be historically accurate. They just wanted to make a fun musical about a circus. And since P.T Barnum was the first person to make the circus they used his name. Wouldn't it be weird if they made this movie but gave Hugh Jackman a random name?
Exactly, this was not advertised as a "historical film" is was entertainment that was loosly based on something that really happend. It's a musical for God's sake...
A Murry I hope you don't mean the visual effects, they were shockingly bad on some points, but who cares, that is not what the movie is about. The cinematography though was nice enough.
Those last songs just cracked me up! 😆😂🤣
Never in a million year I thought that they would pull this off......
I wish they were in the actual movie...
I really wish you guys had full versions of these parody songs. They're amazing
Don’t want to be that guy but Zenedaya actually did most of her stunts😊
Good point. Always like to slag off things that are true about movies, not made up rubbish or false information.
Zendaya does her own stunts in this movie
most, definitely not all
I was looking for someone to say something like that! And yeah, she might not do all of them, but think of how many she does! It’s more than I can do!
Grace Przywara That is the only thing good from the movie
thank you VEERRRYYYY MUCH
No she doesn't. Actors can't do their own stunts for insurance purposes. Only cruise does his owns stunts
Oh my gosh, I stinking died at the new song lyrics LOL! So true!
Luke Pearson Google it, that’s all true
^Joe/Spencer riffed that when recording the singing!
Luke Pearson hil
I knew it was true. That is why it is pure gold!
A+ on the lyrics and singing honest trailers.
A lot of these comments seem to forget the central conceit of Honest Trailers: Its all about being nitpicky and overly-critical for the sake of comedy. That's the point. If you are taking it seriously, you are missing the point. Although this particular one is closer to a real critique than most.
THANK YOU
For the most part though, they are rather accurate
Now I want an elephant revenge action film....
On 'Our lady of the Circus', David Toscana mentions one kind of revenge story for the elephant. But in the end, Barnum throws the elephant out of a boat into the ocean
MackerelSkyLtd Instead of Jurassic Park it would be Elephant Park...
Wasn’t there an episode of Bobs Burgers about this
Just watch or read "Water for Elephants"...Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon are lovers (lol) and there's a lot more elephant coolness
Someone in my screenwriting class adapted that book for her project--I read it, but can't remember much about elephants. At any rate, not the sort of John Wick/Taken, but with Elephants that I now desire! John Tusk? Trunken? Jumbo Unchained?
To be honest, I saw this movie through the eyes of Hugh Jackman and not the real P.T. To me Hugh was the greatest showman, not P.T.
Pradeep Gurung I agree! The film’s director never claims to be historically accurate so critics don’t have a leg to stand on.
kevin willems The same could be said about Pocahontas, A Beautiful Mind, The Patriot, Gladiator, Shakespeare in Love, 300, etc. etc. etc. They took inspiration from real life and made fun entertainment out of it. Nothing wrong with that.
So with the Amadeus example, you agree that a movie can be historically inaccurate for entertainment and writing purposes.
kevin willems they couldn’t ... selling wise
Lindsey Michelle Not very surprising. Movies always lie by calling it artistic licence.
"Cause Zac is a hunk and we are both super fine" xDD
Is it just me that would watch a historical accurate P. T movie
screen junkies should have called it "PT:the extra industrial"
"Zac Efron is rich and white but Zendaya is poor and usually a body double."
I can't stop crying from laughter over that one, especially the body double part.
Will C pretty sure its actually her, said it in an interview.
Zendaya actually did all her own trapeze stunts
Will C usually a body double slayed me
I nearly choked on my dinner at that one, roflmao XD
Then she's full of shit because the movie credits two body doubles.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! This made my night after watching the film. That is so good, lolololololololol!!!
I never understood why everybody liked this movie so much. Catchy songs, sure, but even with them included it was meh at best
It's the songs and the cast, at least for me. Mostly Hugh, Zac, Zendaya, and *especially* Keala.
Also, I learned more about the *good* side of the historical Barnum after doing research following a viewing of this film. Still not a saint, and the movie glosses over a lot, but he wasn't *absolute* slime.
@@ingonyama70 after just what i heard from this video, I would consider him an absolute slime. No good that he has ever done could ever make up for all the horrendous things he is guilty of.
story was fairly good, not the best but enjoyable. Great messages and amazing songs
I was like 5 seconds into the first song of the trailer until I realised that they were parodies
This whole movie is BS. That's why it's genius! It's not a movie about the real P.T. Barnum. It's the movie Barnum would have made about himself
Actually if you see the movie that way it is better.
Holy Crap I never thought of it that way
....kinda makes me wanna see a Mein Kopf musical version now
Mein Kampf...?
Alejandro Frangini I dreamed a dream of Reichs gone by.....
I absolutely love this movie!
however I do agree that it'd have been simpler to give the characters different names and have it be merely "inspired" by P.T.Barnum instead of claiming it was somewhat of a biography.
It actually does say inspired in the trailers
Eli N.S. and Snowwulf78, I kinda get what you mean, but the main character is still named P. T. Barnam in the movie, so it's going to be viewed as biographical. What Benzaiten was getting at is that if they had just renamed Hugh Jackman's character, people wouldn't be giving the movie so much flack for romanticizing the real life P. T. Barnam, who by all accounts was a sucktastic excuse for a human being.
Honest Trailer musical numbers are simply the best. Outstanding vocal talent, lyrical genius, plot relevance, catchy humour. And let's not forget the Epic Voice Guy.
What makes a character interesting is when they have nuance to them, when they are both good and bad the way humans actually are in real life. Also, the best part about this movie is showing how you can take a trait that has caused you misery and turn it into something you profit from by working hard yourself, accepting that the world is the way it is and carving a place for yourself none the less. It is a perfect message to be sent out in an age where people are coddled into emotional fragility and outrage runs amok.
I actually never heard of P.T. Barnum until this movie, I thought everything in this movie was fictional!
It pretty much is. This trailer was much more accurate than the actual movie. P.T. Barnum was a terrible man. He had a partner Bailey, also a man, that they completely cut from storyline because he was worse than Barnum. Bailey tortured and dehumanizing the "freaks" so much that they couldn't make him appear like a decent character.
it is fictional, almost none of this movie it true and you can almost feel it go out of its way to paint him in a good light. P.T Barnum was not a good dude. That being said I did really enjoy the movie and watched it several times
I thought the same. Then I googled his name on the way home from the cinema.
James Lawner lol same
James Lawner same
Zendaya actually did most of her stunts herself, so she wasn't "mostly a body double".....
Faith//Florid Sword
So did Keanu Reeves in John Wick, only difference being that John Wick is a good movie.
The parody songs had me dying. My favourite honest trailer so far 😂
This is the funniest Honest Trailer I’ve ever seen!
Loved it!! “Old School Musical” 😂👏🏼 (but 1:58 Zendaya actually did her own trapeze stunts!)
Joshua Simpson she did all of them but the star one where she was falling into zac
She didn’t. Check the Graham Norton interview. She didn’t dare touch the ring, but I don’t blame her tho. That’s what stunt doubles are for. They know how to that
I watched an interview where she said they used the stunt double as little as possible and she had to learn a lot of trapeze-ing.
If you watch the behind the scenes feature and her on jimmy fallon almost all of rewrite the stars etc is all them no doubles
She didn’t do all the stunts lol
I noticed a lot of people complaining that the story shouldn’t be criticized for not being historically accurate, but imo I think it should be criticized for this because if they’re going to use real life people to tell a story it should at least be accurate , and if it wanted to tell it’s own story fine, just name the characters something that isn’t tied to real life people
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Ever hear of historical.fiction
It doesn't have to be spot on accurate (although I find dedication to those details much more admirable) but it also shouldn't be grossly misrepresenting the truth either.
Lol that movie is a great example of a stupid ass idea being ridiculously well executed.
But Abraham Lincoln hunting vampires is a masterpiece, and totally accurate for sure!
This is my favorite HT review. Well done and thank you HT, was apprehensive because it was a great movie but you knocked it out of the park!

Yes it is.
Not even the best one in the past month tho, the Wes Anderson one was amazing
For me their best work is always directly proportional to the egregiousness of the subject matter. So the 'Fifty Shades' and 'Twilight' franchises inspired my favorite Honest Trailers.
I LOVE those songs you guys made, wish you'd do that for more honest trailers. That was really funny.
This has to be one of my favorite honest trailers ever.
As historically inaccurate as this movie is, I still love the soundtrack
The Soundtrack is complete garbage if you compare it to iconic musicals like Chicago, Funny Girl, Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Miserables, etc.
Who cares if it is accurate. It’s a musical not a history special.
Hidden Figures was just as inaccurate, as are most "based on a true story" films, when will people realize this? I thought it was a great film on its own. Yes, the soundtrack was generic pop nonsense but as a whole the movie was far more enjoyable to watch than La La Land.
As boring and soulless as the story is, I still love (most of) the soundtrack too. Not enough to save the movie itself though. Thankfully I don't need to watch it to listen to the songs.
Sir Johnny imagine if any of the songs in this movie were remotely similar to chicago! Half of Barnum’s songs would sound like Razzle Dazzle and not Oscar bait lol
Who else has been waiting for this since it came out

Songs = good, film = bad. The marketing department for TGS deserve all the awards - I swear it was on every social media channel everywhere I looked in the month or two running up to its release. Anyway, thanks for making this Honest Trailer properly honest and informative! PT was not a nice guy.
I saw it because I loved La La Land, but it didn't sit well with me, and I'm bored stiff of Marvel now. I was bored quite a few years ago and I still don't quite understand why people still flock to them. I like sci fi and action, but Marvel films are for the most part bland and forgettable (though exceptions exist). I'll fully concede that TGS was a refreshing change.
Semantic Samuel, it's called differing tastes. Some people, including me, actually enjoy the Marvel movies. Every movie ever made no matter how "bland and forgettable" will have people who enjoy them, people who hate them and people who are somewhere in between. Why can't we just let people enjoy what they like.
PS, I fucking hate musicals.
Semantic Samuel yeah I was the same, I absolutely loved La La Land so I was hyped for this and it just didn't quite live up, I think in comparison it'd just not as cleverly written, it doesn't have the same complexity to it as la la land and the story line is all very cheesy and predictable. Saying all that, surprisingly perhaps I did like TGS a lot, but I'd comfortably choose la la land any day of the week
I would never have seen La La Land if it wasn't for my sister. I was back at my parents' house over the weekend and my sister was desperate to see it, so I went with her. Not the sort of film I'd ever have picked out to go and see myself, but I'm glad I did! I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy TGS in terms of a cinematic experience - it's a brilliantly made film. I just found the treatment of Barnum a bit unsavoury.
Nope. That's not accurate. It did well on WOM not marketing.
This is as brutal as I needed it to be 😂
this has to be one of your best ones yet
Zendaya didnt usa a double, she actually trained and learnt trapeze to do her own stunts in the movie.
