Kathryn Bigelow made history in 2009 when she became the first woman in film history to win an Academy Award for Best Director for The Hurt Locker. At the time Point Break was made, she was dating James Cameron, who produced three of her earlier genre classics: Near Dark (1987), this, and Strange Days (1995).
It was Bigelow who fought for Keanu, who in 1991 was still considered more of a comedy actor and teen heartthrob type thanks to stuff like Bill & Ted. This gave him some action cred and he also made My Own Private Idaho in the same year, a landmark LGBTQ film from Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting). It still wouldn't be until 1994, however, that he would fully be considered an action star with Speed, which is pretty funny given now he is hugely respected in the action filmmaking community. Also, Bigelow deserves credit for understanding the cross-audience appeal of Reeves and Swayze, as actors who are widely appealing to both men and women.
When Harp gets upset about the surfing, it's because all Johnny is doing up until that point is learning to surf, which doesn't actively get them any closer to catching the Ex-Presidents. He's mad that Johnny is basically becoming a beach bum on the FBI payroll.
The skydiving scenes were done in an extremely clever manner. Real skydivers completed the footage where the camera is above the skydivers and you can see the ground. For scenes showing the actors' faces, a gigantic fan was erected and the actors floated in the wind above it while being shot from below, and then the footage was combined. The one exception was Swayze, who had skydiving experience and completed at least one shot in the film where you actually see him leap out of the plane on camera with no cuts. He wanted to do more but the studio insisted he stop for insurance reasons. Later it was discovered that he then often went skydiving after shooting ended for the day anyway.
The Ex-Presidents tell Johnny point blank that he's going in without a mask on purpose, it's part of the kidnapping and hostage of Tyler, so he can't say no to that either.
They apparently had a sequel written in 1993 and almost started filming, but it fell apart. They were talking about it again in the mid-2000s, but the project went away and turned into a remake when Swayze died in 2009. (I've never heard anyone say anything about the remake, released in 2015.)
Patrick Swayze was so good villain in this. You couldn't but love his character, even you know he was the bad guy. This film really launched Keanu Reeves the action star. I'd say Point Break and Speed are some of the best early 90's action films. Point Break still had that 80's vibes but Speed was full on 90's action. I am missing both kinds of films.
As someone who has skydived when I was 24, I can confirm it does NOT feel like you're falling. It feels like you're floating on air. It is the biggest rush in the world and you'll feel like you can conquer the world afterwards. 😎

20:43 blew my mind when I found out first time that the guy who shot his own foot was Anthony for Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Also Flea had an appearance in the Back to the Future trilogy. RHCP appeared randomly in really great movies.

The whole final scene was about Johnny realizing that he didn't believe in any of the BS he was suppose to stand for. By the time they meet on the beach Johnny is past believing in the law, which is why he confronts Bodhi with 'People trusted you and they died' and not 'You broke the law'. It's a moral accusation not a legal one. After they fight Bohdi confronts Johnny with what's really driving Johnny. He says "I'll go to jail, and I'll pay, and Johnny Utah gets his guy... Big Hero, gonna be a big hero." What Bodhi is saying is 'This isn't about law or even morality, this is about you beating me. You just want to win. Are you gonna send me to prison to satisfy that desire?' Johnny thinks about it for a moment, realizes Bodhi is right, and let's him go.

If you want to see the film that put Keanu Reeves on the map, watch River's Edge. It's a cool film and I still think of Keanu as that character more than any other character since it was the first film I saw him in.

I am 53. In 1988 I was 18 and started going to early raves (pre-internet, meet the dude at a location to get the map to the party, etc). I was there at the dawn of house and techno and it changed my life forever. And I've been making electronic music ever since (mostly soundtracky breakbeat these days).

To my knowledge, this was the first action film directed by a female director. It was kind of big deal then and now. Kudos to Kathryn Bigelow for delivering the goods. Then she went on to direct The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty:)

For about 99 % this is an action popcorn movie, but I have to admit the final scene is deep.
Notice at 35:35, the off-duty police officer Boddie shot noticeably moves his head to the right, indicating he is at least still alive at that point, but Happ lists him as one of the three dead bank victims 🤔
The beach at the end wasn't Australia it was the north west coast of America (the same beach that's in Twilight)

I personally can not bring myself to jump out of a perfectly operating airplane.
I'm not a surfer so I don't know about moon-light surfing, but I have done a couple of midnight runs as a whitewater raft guide. If you know what you are doing and where you are, you can see fine, the moonlight lights up the white water.
