As an asian, itâs very frustrating how I work so hard in school - do assignments almost everyday, take rigorous classes, juggle clubs, leadership positions, volunteer, do after school stuff, sports, sleep so little, and all that is discredited because Iâm asian and thatâs how weâre expected to be
Totally agree. People donât see the hours I put in doing extra math lessons and practice outside school. Good work ethic and dedication should receive recognition!
I'm sorry to hear that but affirmative action policies are designed to address historical and ongoing inequalities that have put certain groups of people, including African Americans and other underrepresented minorities, at a disadvantage. The goal of affirmative action is to create a more diverse and inclusive student body that reflects the demographics of society as a whole.
It is important to note that admission decisions at top universities are not solely based on race or ethnicity. Admissions committees take into consideration a wide range of factors, including academic achievement, extracurricular activities, essays, letters of recommendation, and personal qualities. While having a strong academic record is certainly important, it is not the only criterion that is considered. Admissions rates at top universities have been decreasing in recent years. This is due in part to the increasing number of international applicants, particularly from India and East Asia, as well as the growing popularity of these universities among students worldwide, Harvard's admission rate was about 15% in 2003, now it's less than 5%. It is also worth noting that many applicants apply to multiple universities, regardless of their true interest in the programs offered, which further reduces acceptance rates. I recall watching a video of someone reacting to their admission results and saying "Brown doesn't even have my major but I applied incase I don't get into the any other Ivy". The goal of top universities is to select a diverse and talented group of students who will contribute to the intellectual and social life of the campus community. While affirmative action policies play a role in achieving this goal, they are just one factor among many that are considered in the admissions process.

Itâs a bit sad to overhype schools like Stanford when there are plenty of other places where you can get quality education
Right? There are so many amazing public colleges you can go to for a fraction of the cost, get a great education, meet a more diverse body of students, enjoy your college years more having fun and still get a good job at the end of the day lol. These people are killing their mental health for absolutely nothing.
I agree with that but getting into a prestigious school might help you in your future jobs or building a strong network etc
Caltech is a great school and the amount of Asians enrolling there is around 44% because Caltech cares about merit. If Harvard and the other ivy League didn't discriminate against Asians, the enrollment would be around 40% instead of around 20% currently.
really good to know ty
Itâs actually 28% - that is not a low percentage when you take into account that Asian Americans only account for 5.6% of the population. Cal tech is higher but I wouldnât be surprised if that has something to do with its engineering strengths and the popularity of computing science over law medicine generally. Also if Harvard or cal tech accepted only on academic merit they would have only valedictorians (and even then would end up rejecting some). Thatâs what happens when your acceptance rate is 4%. But that would pretty much suck for diversity, so Universities accept in a number of factors - considering how much benefit they get from minorities financial etc your probably more ahead in the stakes than you think.
The reality is itâs all a scam. You get in on a bunch of criteria, race being just one - hell the fact that your not dirt poor can work against and for you depending on the year. Donât make the uni you get into your personality.
You realize the majority of students at Harvard are Asian right? so instead of saying nonsense like this and weaponizing Asians against other minorities why don't you do a quick Google search?
Sorry bro schools need diversity, canât have the entire population just one race lol
Alas, here we are⊠Asian and White enrollment will soar more than before due to the SCOTUS decision.
I also received those comments on my vids and I couldnât agree with you more. If itâs really the case that I had it rougher because Iâm proudly Asian then so be it.
Ah Iâm sorry you experienced something similar! Thereâs something wrong in the system if we are supposed to embrace who we are and diversity, but doing so makes it harder to get a certain education

This just shows you donât need those colleges, and you will find the college that is right for you & will proudly accept all of you. Iâm sorry you had to experience that. Thatâs not fair whatsoever.
I feel all asian kids grew up with some self hate, but with all of the work the asian family communities have been doing, kids growing up now are more and more proud of being asian. That being said, as a high school junior, I don't fault anyone for hiding their background if it means getting ahead. They should first get themselves stable first then they can better be able to make a difference for the next generation
Thatâs not likely why they didnât pick you

Iâve met a former Vietnamese American Harvard student. She got in due to being well rounded and was able to show more than good grades. She did mention the helping the poor people in Vietnam with various projects. A few of her Asian friends lacked extra curricular so they didnât get in according to her.
most of the time this is exactly what it is đ you didnât get in not bc youâre asian, but bc you have no personality other than being a 4.0 gpa student. they refuse to acknowledge this though and blame affirmative action when in reality itâs rich white legacy students that are taking their spots

Iâm part of the South African Indian population, and Iâve had some people say to me (not anyone in SA, more when I was living abroad with my mother) - âOh youâre so lucky! Youâre going to get into a good university because youâre Asian AND African!â
Like EXCUSE ME ITâS HARD WORK NOT THAT-
Iâm desi, so Iâm not the same type of Asian you are. But I completely understand the frustration that ensues with working as hard as you can but still being denied a chance due to your heritage, something you have no control over. I really donât understand why colleges limit acceptances for Asian applicants because we are some of the most hardworking and successful people out there, and no doubt contribute greatly to society. And you are absolutely right that you should never hide something that is integral to who you are and to your lived experience. If a college acts in such a sense, then they donât deserve amazing people like you on their campus anyway. Encouraging diversity is great and all, but not at the expense of students solely due to their immutable traits.
Interestingly, I know a family who actually spoke with a Harvard admissions consultant. They apparently said that if you are brown and want to go into premed, donât even bother applying to Harvard because your chances are already exponentially low. Iâm not sure if the same applies to East Asians, but all I know was that it was a tragically unsurprising attitude. Donât lose faith in yourself though, you will have a fantastic time and shine at any college you choose to go to!!
Off-topic, but I hate that you have to specify ânot the same type of Asianâ because you donât need to. Desis ARE Asians. If anything, East Asians should begin adding that âEastâ as a prefix and save us all the stereotypes cause Iâm so so so tired of them acting like they represent the whole continent of 48 COUNTRIES!! Ik thatâs the term perhaps Americans use but they need to change that; so cringe.

I think many students try to rationalize rejection of their application from top school, because we tend to believe that there is some kind of rational formula behind admission process and that we can calculate our chance. However, it is not true, there is no solid rationale why some students are accepted while others are rejected.

Chin up and be exceptional for the sake of being exceptional. Like Jewish kids. Be proud of your heritage and donât allow anyone to hold you down. In America, anything is possible if you work for it.
It's not for black ppl. White parents don't want their kids to compete with asians. When you get rid of affirmative action you don't get more qualified acceptance but more White children of legacy.

As an Asian myself, Stop victimising yourself, there are lots of asians at the top schools thereâs no shame in admitting that you didnât make it but you need to move on and focus on doing the best you can
You donât need to go to an ivy to be successful in life. Itâs not like they teach you any better at an ivy, the only difference is the prestige which only matters to the worst types of people. The only career path I can think of that require an Ivy League education is like a Supreme Court judge and thatâs for law school not even undergrad.
Getting into Ivy leagues is mostly about status and connections these days
Iâm Asian and itâs something about me that I sometimes wish I could change. At my school, there are so many white kids who still donât know my name and get me mixed up with other Asian students. I thought that winning awards would make them recognise me but all they see me as is a typical Asian girl. It is really triggering and makes me feel like all my work is for nothing.
I love this. I couldn't imagine trying to suppress my culture for a college admissions just because of a stereotype.
my competitions, my achievements, my grades, my intelligence and work habits are all something I work for MYSELF. But instead of the credit going to me as a person, they think itâs because of my race. âOh! Sheâs the only one who got a 100 on her test out of the whole school!â âYeah, itâs because sheâs Asian.â My race has NOTHING to do with my IQ! Itâs so frustrating.

I see you girly, Iâm still young and everybody treats me like an outcast. My school doesnât even celebrate Asian/Pacific Islanders month (or heritage). And whenever I mention it, thereâs this African American kid who thinks heâs better than me (you guys I live every race but I'm just saying him) who laughs every-time. Growing up Asian is beautiful and wonderful, and I'm going to write a book about it. I don't think any Asian kid should face this when they are growing up in America. Yeah not only asian but also being from the middle eastđȘ
Yes listen to people on CZcams telling you why you didnât get into Ivy League. Convince yourself youâre a victim.
that's true tho.
but still, Ivy admissions are very subjective. I say this as an IITian in India who is considering applying for MS in US. We have a very tough objective type exam, and admissions are strictly based on its results. Of course this has its drawbacks, as it disincentivises high schoolers from working on research, and they instead just focus on rote learning and practice;
But no one can argue with the fairness of this system.
I think middle ground should be found.
Iâm filipina, so although I am asian, people often think Iâm spanish. This is something that I always hated as a child. It felt like I had to fight to be seen as who I was. Well, as soon as I got to high school and started applying for lab internships for research I got rejected because I was asian. My friends were brainstorming ways on how to appear less asian so they could get into programs and internships. Suddenly, my appearance and last name was something I could use to my advantage. But it still stung just as much. Iâm not spanish, Iâve never been spanish. I was proud to be Filipina. But when being Asian put me at a disadvantage, I guess I just had to adapt to succeed.
If it makes you feel better. If you go into industry in the mid/long run (with exception of a couple industries) no one will care what school you go to. You can also just get into a high ranking schools masters programs later on if the prestige matters a lot to you.

Shut up. Her stats are near perfect, so an extra point isn't statistically significant enough to matter. She is a hard working, very smart person.
Exactly đ
As a black person, this is super insulting. I have a 4.4 and 10 college classes with 11 scores. I have a 36 ACT, etc. And thats ONLY academic.
Is the only reason I would get in affirmative action? I have all these people essentially telling me Iâm worth less than an Asian no matter what. Why do yâall think you should automatically be accepted? Why do you think everybody else didnât work hard? And why arent you more angered by all the rich, private school, trust fund baby legacies?
Iâm so happy for you and congratulate your academic success, but it is important that we look at the general picture being that without affirmative action processes we would a much lower percentage of Hispanic/African American students accepted into high level universities. It is a fact that what college you attend can dictate your chances at economic mobility, and fact is that PoC are statistically more likely to live in lower economic conditions than white/Asians who have generally a higher economic condition due to decades of prior discrimination.
I am glad to see you succeed, but it is important for universities to at least offer a proportional slots based on what percent of the population is what, itâs isnât racism, itâs fixing decades of discrimination and hold backs that is caused by underfunded minority majority communities.
Iâm from souther Texas atm, a Majority Hispanic Community, but grew up in south Florida in a much wealthier county. I see the difference of how smart students are and what environments they come from and it is a fact that statistically students from higher income areas over preform students in low income usually majority-minority communities, with Affirmative Action we are giving good students in those areas who may not be able to reach the same number as those in higher end areas a chance to attend a better school and have higher upwards mobility. That doesnât mean some Hispanic Kid with a 1.4 and all Fâs will take the spot of a 4.4 GPA black person, much more that a 3.5 Hispanic with A/ABâs will have a better chance of attending a school where they can improve their standing
You can blame the asian people for that.
Unfortunately it was like that when affirmative action was in place. You definitely worked hard. Be proud of yourself. She is just saying that it is unfair that she has to hide her culture in order to be accepted into a school

Actually black people are far more likely to get accepted into college
The people from that region also experienced a LOT of discrimination.
I was watching a British show a few years back that was based in Oxford. The dean was telling two of the kids, âdo you really think youâre special? Everyone here was the top of their class. You are just like everyone else, you are not special.â The AA action was kept in place to keep the Asian enrollment lower. It started to give Black Americans a chance for upward mobility. Asians were duped into thinking they were POC.
Ivy League kids achieve great accolades in their youth of whatever they are interested in. This often times comes in the form of of competitive arts which takes decades to groom. And this takes coaches and countless hours of private lessons discipline and mastery think of raising a young prince. This is the legacy lifestyle these schools expect. A royal type of upbringing and since youâre in a whole nother country you first had to survive then thrive there wasnât enough time for your parents to learn the royal customs of another nation

No schoolclubs, sports teams, or other similar activities are available. What should I do ?
Great job embracing your culture.I'd say it's not your college that defines you, it's what you do that defines your college. You worked hard and if that's the case Harvard and Stanford should be ashamed.I do believe giving souch weightage to essays along with standardized tests is stupid though cause there's so much that defines you as a person even communication wise and that narrows the spectrum of deserving students that get in due to cultural differences as well.
Ahh this is when our stress of trying to make our parents proud doubles many times
