My Chinese friend got accepted to Ga. Tech but couldn't understand what the letter said. He said it started with "greetings" and figured that that was good. I told him that when I got drafted into the military during the Vietnam war that the letter started with "greetings" from the president.

The problem is for ivies is that every single person applying has a near perfect sat, perfect gpa, athlete and a bunch of extracurriculars. The bigger issues it that theyre all the same extracurriculars so theres nothing particularly eye opening to the ao since they've seen so many applicants that have the exact same stats. You need to think outside the box and put activities on your resume that reflect to the real world and real accomplishments that match with your major.

If you’re a senior reading this: the reason you shouldn’t tie your self esteem to college admissions isn’t for your mental health, IT’S BECAUSE IT DOESNT MEAN SHIT. As an intl student, I was accepted everywhere I couldn’t ask for finaid (including UC Berkeley), and rejected at every other school, including some ranked much worse. Some things are unfair, or random: it sucks but no matter where you go, I trust you’ll make the most of it and prove these colleges wrong.

This bro did everything on hard mode. Mad respect tho cuz he not *ONLY* got into some amazing schools, but he had the cajones to post his Ls and not take himself too serious.
Still, Easy Mode would have been to select the least impacted STEM majors and then change your major your freshman year. This strategy helped me get into 3/5 UCs I applied and my stats were no where near impressive as his. For context, I applied under Applied Mathematics and then switched to Financial Mathematics.
I believe the same thing can be done for Comp Sci, just go under Informatics or Information Systems. These majors are usually under the same school (e.g., of Engineering or Letters & Science). For some schools if it’s under the same department, you may even be able to keep the same advisor.
The problem with public universities these days is that they require you to know the ins and outs. Even in university, you’ll have to be strategic about courses and time management to get the best GPA. I found myself not risking my GPA for more interesting/relevant classes in the fear of getting a B+. I wish the system would allow for some more intellectual curiosity and make courses hard-but not so that you have to weed through them to get to the finish line.

hey man, just my two cents as a fellow applicant this year.
heard a lot of research and data to point out that during this year, almost every single college has received near double the amount of applicants they would have had under normal circumstances, and I can only assume that this can be attributed to the entire world moving out of lockdown. this surge forced a lot of universities into really tough decisions - which they kept postponing (considerably more deferrals and waitlists)
so if anybody didnt get into some universities that they really wanted to this year, dont worry about it dude. dont downplay yourself.
side note congratulations to you, Stanley on some great admits!
hope everyone has fun in whatever endeavour they pursue!

Congrats bro, although from what I’ve seen the best thing to do is try your best to get into only a couple of schools.
You were obviously smart enough for all these schools you applied to, but so is the majority of people applying. What gets you in is showing a lot of interest in a University and writing a good essay, etc. Especially with many schools going test optional, the best bet for anyone looking to go to college is to invest a lot into a school you really love and theoretically have the grades to get into.
Schools don’t want to accept people who are just trying to get into any top-level university, they want people who are interested in them specifically.

the engineering acceptance rate is low for UIUC, and I wouldn't be surprised if CE was a little lower (given that CS is like 6%). Other non-engineering related majors are far easier to get accepted to UIUC for, so I would guess that the people from your school might mark other intended majors

I'm going to UIUC out of state for engineering (actually typing this from my dorm right now!), engineering school is surprisingly pretty competitive! I'm not sure if out of state vs in state makes a difference, I'm guessing it does because it's a state school

Great college reaction video! I noticed that none of the UC's you applied to accepted you. From what I've known, they favor more students from California(not entirely sure if you are from there). For example from my school, UCLA and UCB both accepted 30+ students. Top 10 basically guaranteed admission, and for others they have a well rounded background. Rumor has it that the UC System in general is a coin flip system. I know this info doesn't mean anything to you anymore, so what matters is to keep that rhythm going at NYU!
