Not sure which is more impressive - the Eurocrap actually making it around the course, or Powerful Pensioner's fantastic effort.
And it would be great to see what Phil could do on that course if you actually gave him more time/tips on the aerobars.
Should we do a training challenge with Phil? He could be rapid on a TT bike 💨
@@gtn Phil would be an excellent candidate for “How long does it take to adapt to the TT position?”. You already have his FTP in the road position, test him again now in the TT position, then give him 8-12 weeks to train in the new position, and see how he does.
Phil certainly looked like someone who's never used aero bars. I imagine he'd be more competitive if he could stay aero and race on a less technical course.

Oh who is this Powerful Pensioner? We need more of him (as others are also sayin) and if there is a rematch, will he be included? It's only fair. When training, it is THE most humbling experience to have an ol grey beard on a Rivendell pass ya on the big climb (not that this happened to me, just .. so I have heard). So these two need that extra push!!!

It’s difficult to tell whether Phil didn’t have the power or just that with a deep section time trial bike just struggled to control it in the cross winds and hence had to slow down to control the bike
206W honestly isn't bad for a beginner, great effort.
On one hand i would love to see a race where Phil is more confident on the aerobars, on the other this goes to show that its a bit pointless for a beginner to buy a super bike
Phil is definitely more aero because he's wider and as everyone knows in road biking, Wider is faster!!!

Just shows you don’t need to spend a fortune, unless your confident on TT bars your wasting your time, half decent bike and bit of training goes a long way!
Would have been interesting to see the same test but also including mid level amateur someone who could do an Ironman 70.3 in say 5:45hrs.

I was wondering the height of the individual on the Canyon?...His aero stem seemed really high...that is why I ask...
I'm as big of a fan of Phil as the next guy, and as fun as this video is, can we have some comparisons with some 'enthusiasts' racing pros? Would love to see someone with (for example) an FTP of 4ish with the equipment difference. It's obvious that Phil will get obliterated every time, so it isn't super interesting.
What about the powerful pensioner?
Looking at his performance here I'd guess he's probably around the 4w/kg mark, definitely above 3.

There is a real learning curve on those top end Tri bikes - even going from a road or gravel bike with clip on aerobars, the CFR geometry really stretches you out. It's intimidating enough for a beginner on a clear, dry day. Give him a few hours practice and he'll be flying!
I know, a foot race with Nikes on slow bloke and clogs on the professional, and they should run in a creek.
