  • The Story from the newspaper
    Kerryman
    Sat 28 Feb 2015
Human remains are lying exposed in one of Kerry's oldest graveyards but there are question marks over just who is responsible for covering up a tomb which has become exposed to the elements.
The macabre discovery was made by Castlemaine resident Peter Hill who was out for a casual stroll at White Church Cemetery with his dog on Saturday. The cemetery is just off the Killorglin road out of Milltown and Mr Hill sent a picture of the remains to The Kerryman, asking if more could be done to respect the dead.
Kerry County Council said that the graveyard is owned by the Church of Ireland and is therefore not their responsibility, while council officials have reported the matter to gardaí.
Kilderry-based Church of Ireland Reverend James Stephens, though, has questioned the council's declaration, stating that the graveyard actually dates back to before the Reformation.
"I don't think that this is completely in Church of Ireland care as it dates to before the Reformation and there are people of all traditions buried there, so ownership is unclear," he stated, adding that he was unaware of any Church of Ireland burials at the cemetery in recent years and there had been no parish clean ups organised.
"Of course I would be very upset if there are bones exposed in a local cemetery and so I would be interested in investigating the matter further,"

One can only imagine how lovely this graveyard was when new,it over grown.disgusted how some beings can desecrate a church whether in ruins or not.Dunno maybe it’s a blessing that Mother Nature is reclaiming the land and perhaps providing protection to those who rest here.

Your tours of these beautiful old graveyards and ancient ruins are so interesting. It's sad that so much is deteriorated, but there is beauty in the plant growth too. The ancient church ruins are gorgeous. Such a lovely setting...peaceful and Mother Nature overtaking all. Thank you for such an interesting tour! @zombiemom6701, every time I watch one of Serenity Sue's videos, I wonder whether my ancestors' graves have been preserved. I have some ancestors in Pennsylvania as well. The first of my ancestors who came to America (pre-revolution) purchased Poor Island in the Delaware River from William Penn. Our family genealogy buff has a copy of the deed. The island, I understand, is now the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. I don't know where those ancestors might be buried, though. Sadly, I live far away, so I've never done any exploring there.

It's a shame that when a person dies and their intered in a vault that over time that vault is going to deteriorate.
And if there are no descendants to take care of it then you can be sure it's not going to last.
As for those who desecrate cementaries they should be prosecuted.

It's to bad they couldn't have been restored when it first started. I was saddened to see the bones lying in there. You are Amazing and I was happy to see your husband there with you. I found this information: The mostly protestant graveyard was in use from the mid-18th century. The current ruined church was probably built on the foundations of an earlier one. The church was rebuilt around 1770, but quickly fell into disrepair with the bankruptcy of the local landlord in 1793 and was abandoned in 1810.

According to what I read in irish law the holder of the land, which is a cemetery or burrial ground, is to maintain it in good order. It even has provisions for fencing. It doesn't mention deconsecration as an abrogation of responsibility. Human skeletal remains are not really a health hazard. Mainly disconcerting to some people. This site as noted by you has a serious structural safety issues. In fact I wonder why the area has not been fenced off. By the looks of some they should be demolished and filled in. Then any found markers placed back on top. That would also secure the remains. The trouble is money and will. However when the wild flowers come out that place must be pretty.

They keep all the grounds cut and weeded and edged out they keep the sidewalks clean and maintain the grounds greatly. If there is something wrong or out of place with a grave the family is immediately called and arrangements have to be made to fix the issue. Therefore, The cemetery is always kept up and cleaned.

My father was from LA, my great grandparents were traders and owned two trading posts. I see both my fathers and my Moms maiden name here and there, I was only 9 years old when I started loosing the stories of my father's grandparents. Their early death's made it difficult to know all the stories, we know allot about my Moms family through DNA searching the history. So I find your efforts interesting. Keep up the great work! A new fan,
    Angie

I have seen this type of thing on my graveyard walks. I always carry a bag of plain whits flour to rub onto any inscriptions that are difficult to read, it does no harm and can be washed off with water. I keep all of my info stored, as I have had a few people contact me to see if I can help them with any family names, and where the graves are. Another little gem of footage.

I retired as a Police Sergeant 29 yrs ago and on two separate occasions in my service have known of vaults being vandalised and on one occasion a human skull was left in a shop doorway. Th only thing we could do was hand it to the local vicar of the identified graveyard who returned it to the vault. As for the maintenance and repairs of private tombs it is down to the deceased's family and not the church. There are so many abandoned graveyards that exceed the scope of local volunteer groups who willingly try to tidy them up. If only we had an organisation like the war graves commission who make such a wonderful job of maintaining war graves throughout the world.

There is something about old overgrown graveyards that I like beauty and decay, I find it very sad that someone can desecrate the place just why they do it? no respect for the dead. Thank you Sue 👏👏💜💜

Hi Sue! Another beautiful Church and Graveyard! So beautiful a country!
It is a sad situation, but we must remember that the body is only a vessel we occupy while we are alive, and it is empty after we are gone.
There are many ways to deal with the remains, and we need to let them return naturally to the earth. Cremation is one of the quickest ways to return to the earth, and coffins in concrete vaults are the slowest way.
Whatever you decide to use, remember, the longer your remains are intact, the easier it is for them to be disturbed.
