One of the reasons behind colorization of movies was to cater to people like me (at one time, not now) who refused to watch black & white movies; they thought we might watch the classics at least if the films were in color.
I grew up on b&w TV and movies and was just sick of it, especially after most TV shows and movies switched to color. I've since learned more about movie making and movie history, and now love classic movies (thanks TCM).
But back then I skipped anything in b&w, yet would've watched those same movies if they'd been in color.

Another great job on this one Fil.
As a musician, my feelings on this are that the people who are doing all this pitch correction are people who really know their stuff when it comes to digital manipulation. However, they're probably not musicians and couldn't carry a tune if it had a handle on it.
When they hear real music I'm sure they feel like they are having ice picks shoved in their ears because it is not 100% digitally correct.
However it is musically correct because it has the feeling of the original artist who recorded it.
I feel the same way about the old black and white movies that are being colorized. The ones who are doing the colorization have the technical skill and ability to color correct these films. What they don't have are the eyes and technical skill and talent of the original cinematographers who created these films. They knew the subtleties of lighting and contrast and how to make something that had no color become beautiful and vibrant and draw you in.
I agree with you that eventually the original performances and recordings and also the movies are all going to be gone. Replaced by digitally perfect imperfections of whatever they were.
As humans we are not perfect and neither are the types of art and entertainment that we create. That is what makes them enjoyable. By replacing that with digitally perfect copies you are basically taking the humanity out of whatever it is.

Very well said ... and, great classic movie analogy! Yes, the people who are doing the pitch correction really know their stuff but do they know what they are doing? They are seeing music with their eyes instead of listening to music with their ears. The result of the digital manipulation will necessarily mean that the life will be sucked out of modern recordings, rendering 'voices' devoid of artistic expression and emotional storytelling. Do you think there are enough real music lovers and artists left in the world to fight back against pitch correction being the music industry standard? @@elizabethmiller7291 "replaced with computer-generated voices" NO.
The voices are NOT replaced. Just a pitch adjustment.
"pitch correction sucks the life out of modern recordings". Occasionally, only.
BUT Not always! And mostly does not. Do Adele's recordings. No. Are Celine's, Shakira's. No. Their studio albums/songs have some pitch adjustment.
Are many other artists I could mention, where you would say there's no pitch adjusting, but there is. Are also artists where some say have been pitch adjustment when it hasn't been.
Also, pitch adjustment is only done in spots in a song. Most of the song is as recorded with other production, mastering, mixing techniques used for final product. So, as most of the vocal is as was recorded (with those techniques used) & much of the song, in many parts, doesn't have pitch adjustment/correction, there's no "natural voices are replaced with computer-generated voices" like you incorrectly think!
There's no computer generated voices on 98% of songs. And the other 2% aren't even sold or downloaded much as it's AI. And absolutely no music industry nor commercial release of any popular singer & less popular ones uses AI. AI songs is only online, so far, and there's not many.
[*Note, I'm not referring to this specific Willie & Kris video].
(About the commercial/chart only song, ever, where a digital program was used to make a voice sound like computer generated was Cher's Believe. Voice was not "replaced" by any "computer-generated voice"!)
'Pitch Correction' is a horrible, & misunderstood word. Artists mentioned and for many others, pitch adjusting (not "correcting"!!) is done because it is better, for listening & people's ears when in digital format.
Yes, there's some artists where more work is done, but there's many were little has been done and it has been used, but Not for "correcting".
Also youtube audio is a really s**t place to get audio from, as many songs uploaded to youtube have had re-mastering done (which may use pitch adjustment, & decrease in the "top-end" as a lot of 60s-70s-some 80s do sound very pitchy.
The same production, mastering, mixing & other techniques were used in the 60s/70s, & in the 80s synthesisers (moog, etc) were being used, as well as other electronic means were being used. How do you think the effect on Peter Frampton's Show Me The Way was created, which altered his voice to sound like an instrument. People now, who don';t know it's a 1970s song, think it's computer generated. So, with your comments, you'd also have to say that vocal was "replaced" with "something else".
So it has only changed from using analogue & physical means, to digital means.
While the person said "over-dubbing" was used before pitch correction, it is not perhaps the best word for it. Multi-tracking is better description.
It is Impossible for vocalists to sing a vocal at exact same pitch every time (except a few singers can do it), so when multi-tracking (with old gear), one or more of the tracks will be speed pitch adjusted slightly. Adjusting speed affects vocal pitch, so effectively 'pitch correction' has been done.
On many Carpenters songs & quite a number of Beatles songs there's been 16 channels/tracks used to create the studio song. With 4 to 6 tracks used for the lead vocal/s. Do you think each recording of the same vocal would be sung at exact same speed pitch, and exact same vocal pitch everytime.
Particularly after doing many takes, & it's getting late, & everyone will slow slightly. So each channel/track recording is adjusted to match the lead track/channels 1&2. In analogue. So therefore "overdubbing" /multi - tracking is more or less the same end result as pitch adjusting.
There's websites where can listen to each individual channel/track, in a multi-tracked song. There's also many videos on youtube that show what was done, for a number of old songs.
No voices, at all, are "being erased and replaced with something else" like you think. When using Pitch Adjustment. (or if insist on the using extremely misunderstood term 'pitch correction' which I hate Phil saying/using).
All digital pitch adjusting/correction does is shift some segments only, of existing vocal to slightly different spot on or between the staffs/staves.
If you say current 21st songs, voices on youtube & elsewhere online are "replaced" vocals "with something else", then you have to also say same for many 60s/70s/80s, & particularly 40s 50s songs that are online.
Since many of those uploaded to the web (for & before the upload) had 're-mastering' which often includes pitch adjustments/correcting (if must use the lousy word "correcting" since was nothing wrong with the singing & mostly never was /isn't

Whenever new versions of old music is released we’re told that it’s been remastered and marketed as the superior version.

HI Fil - I knew as soon as I heard Kris sing 3 notes that it wasn't his voice. I bought the vinyl in '71 and have gone through all the different media devices with this album. The reason I loved his voice, and still do is because he did have that story telling voice. The pitch corrected Kris sounds like someone else trying to copy him. This is a tragedy! His timing becomes a distraction without the slides and bends. History will judge this time in music as something akin to the Inquisition. I just read the comments to the original video sorted by date. It's weird how until yesterday everybody was absolutely gushing over that live performance. Nobody commented on the voices except to say things like "Willie has a voice that only makes certain songs beyond beautiful", "4 great singers but willie effort less voice class", "Willie u nailed it what a powerful voice.... Love ittt" (all literal quotations).
In contrast, over the last 8 hours the comments are:
    "this weird robotic sound"
    "it just doesn't sound right."
"They're stealing the soul from these wonderful artists."
    "Why mess with greatness?"
"It's a bloody shame and disgrace"
"the very life sucked out of their natural voices!"
    "How fucked up."
Apparently today everyone magically became able to tell when a voice has been autotuned.

    • @elizabethmiller7291
      @elizabethmiller7291 Před 10 dny +1

I think you are negating the possibility that most people who listened to that original video - pre-Fil's analysis - are not aware of pitch correction being used so widely and many may not really know what Willie's voice sounds like naturally.
And, on top of that, those who are commenting post-Fil's recent analysis are more likely to be able to tell the difference between natural and pitch corrected voices.
But, the real point here is that anyone who listens to the pitch corrected vocals in this video is sadly missing out on all of the artistic expression and emotional storytelling that make up a natural voice. Or, do you think it is just a case of 'what you don't know won't hurt you!'?

    • @elizabethmiller7291
      @elizabethmiller7291 Před 10 dny +1

Also, the reason for those comments post-Fil's analysis is an effort to bring the dreaded practice of using pitch correction on the voices of great singers to the attention of a wider audience of real music lovers. Are you ready for a revolution!? :)

I have been a fan of these guys for nearly 50 years. Part of what I like about them is that neither of them exactly hit the notes they are aiming for. Willie because he is deliberately using his voice and guitar to make interesting sounds and Kris because he didn't have a voice that was good enough to hit the notes. It didn't matter has it was all about the songs and the authenticity of the performance. Seeing him on stage all in black, with just his guitar, was like watching a force of nature.

What I don't understand is, good music is a thing of the past, people don't care for well crafted and quality sung songs. So, why pitch correction? Been engineering and producing albums since the late 80’s….and…the Publison Infernal Machine at Royal Recorders was the first piece of gear that I used to sample and pitch correct vocals. However we could also vari speed the analog machine and bounce an out of pitch track to correct it. the incredible fidelity of the 2” MCI and whatever half track machine we would bounce the audio clip to would not produce audible noise floor for many bounces. Think early Queen albums with the vocal overdubs. By todays standards the noise floor on those individual tracks os stunning!
Folks in pre digital days who were composing and/or editing music on analog tape may have relied on archane tools such as razor blades, and can be sure we thought carefully before doing any edits!
The new tools make me feel slightly guilty, as I do so much more love artists who train, take lessons, rehearse and practice their artistry, over those who rely on tools to “fix it in the mix”. Suprise suprise vocal correction has in practice been absolutly routine since the late 80’s. Try and find a Publison now
