    A few things: The original macross show came out in 1982, Harmony Gold tried to sell Macross as a TV show in 84 but at 36 episodes it wasn't long enough for syndication, so they merged it with Southern Cross and MOSPEDA into Robotech, which came out in 1985.
    By the time Robotech came around, Takatoku, the company that was making the Macross toys had gone bankrupt and was bought by Bandai. After Transformers was a smash hit in 1984, Hasbro were looking for toys to add to the line and licensed a chunk of Takatoku's back catalogue from Bandai, which became Jetfire (the VF-1S Valkyrie from Macross), the Deluxe Autobots (both from Dorvack - the Mugen Calibur became Whirl and the Ovelon Gazzette became Roadbuster)and Deluxe Insecticons (all from Beetras. Beet-Gadoll became Barrage, Beet-Gugal became Chop Shop, Beet-Vadum became Ransack and Beet-Zeguna became Venom). As a result, Matchbox, who had the rights to make Robotech toys couldn't release a transforming VF-1 Valkyrie, even though they did reissue some of the Takatoku toys which Hasbro did not license, most notably the Destroids and a pair of SDF-1 toys. In order to avoid legal issues, Jetfire was redesigned for the comics and animation to look less like a VF-1 (his original character design showed up in the ads for the toy and can be found online) and was renamed Skyfire in the cartoon quite late in the show's production, to the point that his series 1 appearances were originally recorded with his original name and were re-recorded before they came out.
    The Macross video advertised in the back of the comic had the first three episodes of the show on them, but the comic only adapted episode 1. The Robotech: The Macross Saga comic started with issue 2 which adapted episode 2 and switched to the names and terminology which changed in Robotech from the Macross adaptation (Hikaru ichijyo was renamed Rick Yamada for the Macross translation and became Rick Hunter in Robotech, for example)

      Fascinating. I always did wonder why there was a change from jet fire to Skyfire, even though it was obvious that it was the vf1 from macross.
      Personally I was very disappointed with the Matchbox toys overall, especially since we did have a volume Liquidator that had honest to goodness Macross figures brought over from Japan.
      Great information though, spoken like a true protoculture addict!

      @@philipburnette7315 There is a great moment from a Matchbox presentation of the toys...the guy attempts to show an Invid vehicle transformation, and breaks in two in his hands. At that point, all you can really do is just move on LOL

      @@philipburnette7315 There's some interesting legal wrangling back and forth around Jetfire later on. Harmony Gold actually tried to sue Hasbro in 2013 when they released a SDCC-exclusive GI Joe Skystriker toy in Jetfire colours and a module that clipped onto the back that looked a bit like the VF-1's FAST Packs. They demanded the toys be recalled and either be destroyed or handed over to them, plus the revenue from the sales, and an undetermined amount of damages. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the courts found in favour of Hasbro, dismissing the case with prejudice.
      And yeah, the Matchbox toys are... well, you can see which toys came from Japan and which didn't. There's an infamous clip of someone demonstrating the Veritech Hovertank toy and it breaks in his hands. As a kid my mum visited Hiroshima and came back with a Bandai VF-1S as a present for me and I swapped it with another kid for a pile of GI Joe figures, thinking it was just a Jetfire variant. And then Robotech came on TV over here the next year and I was raging. Much later in life I'd get into collecting the modern fancy Macross toys and they're just fantastic.

    I grew up with Robotech and I absolutely loved it... It's one of those shows that I remember running home to watch everyday. It still pulled no punches in killing off some main characters which was a shock to me as a kid. I remember GI Joe they always parachuted out at the last second, but in Robotech... characters died and the stakes were high! It was an awesome experience. I still love Robotech and Macross.

    These pages were made with a painted layer as the backgrounds. An animation style cel - a copy of the line work with paints underneath was used for characters and objects. Another layer was used for the word balloons. It was too work intensive to sustain for the rest of the series.

    I never saw that early issue of Macross (your pronunciation killz me, btw). I didn’t see the comics until around ‘87, maybe’88.
    While Superdimension Fortress Macross debuted in Japan in 1982, Robotech as a TV series aired in 1985.
    Hasbro had the license make Jetfire figures, only Tatsunoko had the license to use tge design in animation. If you remember, Jetfire/Skyfire was completely redesigned in the Transformers series

    It Is very likely that this issue was indeed worked from the animation cels. Carl Macek packaged what became Robotech later after he had connected with Harmony Gold via a shop he owned dealing animation cels. HG brought in Macross to show him, and he was already familiar with the series. The artist of this issue was Svea Stauch, later to become Svea Macek, Carl's wife. As @lorcannagle mentions below, I believe the Intention was sell Macross as a series starting with this lone issue as a tie in, before taking a closer look at the current TV landscape and realizing the needed a longer amount of series episodes for syndication. Thus, Carl looked at 2 other series and established the package as a multi-generation story.

    • @lorcannagle
      @lorcannagle Před měsícem

      Good shout on mentioning Carl Macek's gallery. The relationship between Macek and HG began when someone came in to him looking for cels from a few shows to use as part of a presentation to the company to try and get them to buy the rights. When they mentioned Macross Macek said it was a good choice, they recognised his expertise and they looped him into the project.
