      Exactly! It was a Triumph!
      Their short Tour of Europe was a big success! They were received like conquering heroes over there.
      Which makes me think they were better off moving to Europe and would have had a longer and successful career if they had moved to London or Paris. Maybe even Frankfurt.
      The European audiences were incredibly devoted and appreciated them better that in the US. Here they couldn’t get arrested. There they were playing sold out shows and encores. A big difference!
      Well, at least they finally got a taste of what popular success would be like. Here I never heard any VU song on the radio except Sweet Jane solo Lou Reed.
      In Europe, they probably would have gotten some airplay even. This recording is great and now it’s rock history!

      @written12 Před 3 lety +11

      You’re right and probably because they didn’t try to sound like the records. The songs sounded familiar and fresh.
      But I’m not sure the total rephrasing of Lou’s singing of Venus in Furs. Loved every note of the band’s playing but Lou did too much speech-singing on Venus for my tastes.
      Oh, Television did some solid reunion gigs-- as did Rocket from the Tombs. Check out Rocket Redux if you cotton to David Thomas, Cheetah etc.

      He was performing at the Alternative Nation Festival in Melbourne, Australia.
      I was there to see Primus, NIN, and Bodycount 🤣
      While wandering around I came across this dude with an electric guitar and his incredible songs - I was captivated and had no idea why, but it resonated and I've been listening to him and the band ever since.

      I understand where you are coming from but in 1993 U2 were one of the biggest bands on the planet and they had a helluva lot of respect for Lou and the VU. If you watched U2's Live Aid set in '85 they featured Walk on the Wild Side & Satelite of Love - in truth, U2 were in awe of the VU's. Not sure there was any shame there - total admiration would be kinder.

    This was their triumphant European tour that was sold out everywhere they played and VUs last Hurrah! And it was great to finally see Moe Tucker drumming live. I have always liked and admired her style. I didn’t know she drummed standing up! Cool!
    Looking back in hindsight, the Velvets would’ve been better off staying in Europe and touring there for most of their career. They were practically ignored in the US. No Radio AirPlay and only the critics cared about them but in Europe they had an audience and following that cared! Just listen to the crowds reactions after each song!

    I saw them play Glastonbury festival on this tour. People kept moaning about how the songs didn't sound like the records. Every Velvets fan should know their golden rule, It's 'Never play the song the same twice'. Years later I got to work on Lou's 'Berlin' tour and as much as I have always loved his music I found him an extremely awkward person to work for. It's so sad that he and David are no longer with us. Listening to 'Transformer' where you can hear them both so clearly is very emotional. They are all missed.

Schwartz and A. Warhol), now let them do a 96 hour run on meth till they had to slow down with some smack but they did so much smack they had to do more meth to be able to function, now imagine having to be around that person after they'd been living that sort of lifestyle for months on end, awkward in that way.
