    LOVED our trip to Iceland. We’ll definitely be back! There is a lot to do, the natural world around the towns is beautiful and the people were very nice. Just because it’s cold and often snowy in Iceland doesn’t stop anyone from outdoor activities like swimming. I found the country and the people welcoming and am sure to tell others that it’s somewhere that they should explore. BTW - the getting clean under your swimsuit is a practice that should be used in every country!🙂

    Here in the US some of the first public pool facilities in the modern sense were in NYC, specifically Jones Beach. The architect Robert Moses deliberately designed the transition from the changing areas to the pools to include a walk through a stream in which a disinfecting solution was run. There was no way around it and the distance was too far to jump, so everyone had to have their feet cleaned whether they want to do so.

    You totally forgot one thing (to ease the minds of the most nervous ones). That in most pools in the capital area there are a few showers with curtains for those who feel uncomfortable cleaning themselves infront of others.

    I went to the town pool in Stykkishólmur and what you say is the gospel truth!!! I am so glad we went. While sitting and soaking our sore muscles from all the hiking and climbing we had been doing, we met some very nice locals who were eager to give us travel tips and advice. When we arrived, I was nervous because I had i go in the shower room by myself since I went with a male travel companion. The woman at the front desk was very intimidating, almost threatening, when instructing us to check out all the rules posted on the walls and not to break any. There were no shower police to watch the actual showering, but when I carried my wet suit wrapped in my quick dry towel after drying myself, one of the straps was not tucked all the way inside the towel and it dripped on the floor in the dry area where the lockers are located. Some girls who were leaving the locker room right as I was nakedly walking to my locker in the “dry area” ratted me out, because in less than two minutes, the woman entered the locker room with a mop. She shamed and berated me in front of everyone for missing a sign saying “dry area”. I thought she was going to hand me the mop and make me mop up my little “mess”. It was certainly embarrassing! Now it is just a funny story I love to tell friends. The rest of our 8 days went smoothly and it was a surreal experience. I do understand the pride the Icelandic people have for their country. I witnessed some rude acting Americans in certain situations and I was embarrassed. The Icelandic people are so welcoming. We need to respect their customs and their beautiful country! Just read about everything before you go! I read about the shower rules of the naked group showers in two of my travel guides, but I didn’t read about the dry areas. It surely cuts down on falls! This could be an isolated rule from town to town. I’m planning a trip for next September and I will surely not break that rule again!

    Just some additional info about the swimming culture of Iceland. Learning to swim in Iceland is mandatory for children 12-16 years old since 1939 but was first implemented in the Westman islands in the late 1880´s and then made a community law in the West.Is in 1925... so that is one of the reasons for being a swimming facility in most towns in Iceland, many people had to travel to the next town or city that had a pool at that time until more where built .. I have lived in Iceland since I was 10 years old back in 1977 and the swimming all year round was a new thing for me but have grown to love it... and yes we do have staff looking on to see if you have showered but not in a police matter but they can easily see if your hair or body is dry or wet before you go out into the pool area i i think this is a good thing as our swimming pools are not a bath tub for people / mostly tourist as Icelanders know this rule already since childhood.. I have seen some people get into the pool without showering and have full makeup on a dry hair then dip their heads underwater with dirty hair and face nd who knows what else eewww ..

      There is literally a legal position for this job as a pool guard... Pool guard / bath attendant makes sure that the rules in the pool area are followed, that the risk of accidents and safety of guests is taken into account, as well as solving problems that arise around swimming pools, hot tubs and outdoor areas. Indoors, pool guards monitor the condition of pools with the help of surveillance screens and intercom systems.
      As a pool guard / bath attendant, you could work in a public or school pool. The job involves a lot of communication with pool guests.
      Main projects
      monitor pool area and guest activities
      identify imminent hazards and prevent breaches of safety rules
      monitor the quality of pool water and take samples
      assist those in difficulty in the pool area

    In Germany, as well as in many Scandinavian countries, you have to get naked in order to go to the sauna. It's expected that you take a shower, too, but there is no police.They don't let a single person in if they are wearing any piece of clothing. Since everybody is equally naked, nobody feels ashamed. Why feel ashamed anyway, it's just a human body.

    I'm going to give you guys an insight from someone who was literally just in Iceland... There is no one guarding the showers to make sure that you are completely naked while showering. Went to the Blue Lagoon, there are privacy stalls. Went to Laugavartn Fontana, they have privacy curtains, and finally, the Gamla Laugin, no one is watching to make sure you shower naked. This is an experience of going three different days. So... either I got lucky, or they were just having off days. Lol. Either way, thanks for the advice Jeannie! Your videos gave such great insight before we went to Iceland.

    Love the segment. I live in Minnesota (say that like a Finlander) and grew up with a sauna, and we were naked. You could use a towel, but no one in my family did. We had to were flip-flops in the winter for sure (so your feet don't freeze on the outdoor cement). When I travel with US friends, they are much more conservative (prudish).

    Haha yes, my Finn friends love their saunas. My first time in a Finnish sauna was at my friend's parents' house, and even though it was just me and my two friends, I wore swimsuit bottoms (one of said friends is American, and she did the same). On my most recent trip the same friends and I stayed at a cabin that has a sauna, and that time the two of us were more comfortable. I haven't gone to a public sauna in Finland yet, though, so we'll see if I'm comfortable enough for that. 😅 (Luckily I think the Finns would be understanding if I wanted to wear a swimsuit or towel...)

    Thank you for de-mystifying. I assume that the changing areas are single-gender so really is not a big deal. Modesty has evolved here even in America and, as a competitive swimmer, I heard in the 1950’s that there was single-gender nude swimming in school/university pools for the same reasons as avoiding chlorine, and baths/saunas in other cultures somewhat shun wearing a swimsuit.

    • @IcelandwithaView
      @IcelandwithaView  Před rokem +5

    • @HB-hs1nr
      @HB-hs1nr Před 11 měsíci +2

      Modesty has definitely evolved in the US, though I'm not sure in a positive direction. We swam nude during boys' gym class in high school in the 1970s. On those days swimming was scheduled we were required to report to class at the pool nude. Everyone went to the locker room first, stripped bare, showered and then went to the pool deck naked. No one thought anything of it. It was just the way it was. Swimsuits were deemed unnecessary in a same-gender environment. I think there was a practical aspect as well: avoiding having to bring a swimsuit to school and then walking around with it wet after class before bringing it home, or having the school provide swimsuits and take on a laundry function.

Once we got the car parked, I automatically ducked behind nearby bushes to change into my swimming trunks. But as I was changing I realized all the Germans, men and women, had simply stripped and changed together, near the car! Yes, there are people in the locker rooms generally keeping an eye on things to make sure no one goes out to the pool without showering, but they are not sitting there watching individual people shower. And no one else around you is any more interested in looking at your body than you are in looking at theirs. It’s a simple 2 minute rinse in order to keep the pools clean without using chlorine. The trade-off of a more natural bathing experience is totally worth it. I highly recommend you reconsider visiting the pools, one of the most enjoyable and iconic features of Iceland. :)
