I was one of the first infantry units in basic that went to that uniform. The ds were still wearing the best ones ever made. We were told we did not match and the marched us to a mud puddle and made us do different rigorous exercises through the mud. Hour or so later they formed us back up and said. " now your camouflage."
Probably the biggest favor they could've done you.

Wasn't army, so, most of this goes right past. That said, as someone who used to enjoy hunting, often wondered how that pattern was supposed to be a camouflage pattern.
Hey! I was 22yrs USCG and we weren't wearing that "grins&giggles" stuff the USN was wearing back in 98.
It’s computer generated the camouflage isn’t really meant to blend its to break up your silhouette but the marines and Canada’s digital camo worked army was like fuck it let’s make it grey and tan and call it a day
I believe that the Marine Corps adopted a digital pattern first....except the Marine Corps actually did it right

The digital pattern is better as it breaks up you’re body more. The us army just chose aweful colours that don’t work with any terrain. (The goal of camp is to break up the shape of you body not to make you look like a leaf)

In Iraq, 2005, we were still in our DCUs. About halfway through our deployment, we could see the new units showing up in their gravel-blue ACUs.....from about a klick away as they stood in front of their tan HMMWVs, in the brown terrain surrounded by brown buildings.

All my issued ACU's is fort Jackson 2010 had a tag that stated roughly "these uniformed were handmade and tailored by blind and handicapped people who spend time volunteering to ensure the safety of our soldiers." Kinda made sense.

I know this is an old video, but I just recently discovered your channel. This video had me laughing so hard. The only thing I found the ACUs could half way blend in with was the trunk of a palm tree when I was in Hawaii. I missed having the starched and pressed BDUs with highly polished boots.

No joke, a buddy of mine and I passed each other and bumped shoulders. Little did we know we had actually swapped combat patches without even knowing it. When I finally looked down towards my combat patch for some reason, seeing the 4th ID patch really confused the shit out of me. Funny enough I just walked around until I found my buddy with my 1st ID patch. It was fucking comical. As you imagine we started to rag on the ACUs again.
Remember doing counter-column marches? Freakin platoon patch exchance. All you can hear is velcro ripping off everybody's shoulders and you have one dude with no patches and another dude with 3 American flags

One thing I noticed with the side-facing shoulder pockets on the OCP's; it seems easier to get backpacks on and off as you don't have shoulder straps catching on the top flap as with the old ACU's.

I'm not gonna lie, I hated everything about that uniform. EVERYTHING. The second best thing they ever did with it was letting us sew on rank and name tapes...the first was to get rid of it. But I digress, while an awkward color (idk why angry kept saying it's blue?) It does serve it's purpose. I'll never forget doing land nav in basic and having another platoon's DS sneak up on us from the front. Yes, I said front. That's the only time I've ever seen them work though, in the woods at Fort Jackson with some red phase privates 🤣

As a BDU baby I can wholeheartedly agree with this. When the ACU came into service I was like wtf.
I'm a civilian, and even I agree with this sentiment; I grew up in the 80's & 90's when BDU's were universal across all services, then the Marines got their MARPAT which was cool, as it still did a decent job at what it was supposed to do while also making them look badass, then the Army got the ACU's and I was like "wait, hold up, WTF is this?!"
@@Orca19904 I got out in 2004 so I just missed the ACU debacle. Knowing the way my unit on Bragg functioned they would've made me pay for the things even though they should be considered initial issue. My unit in Panama used unit funds to issue the (then) new light weight BDUs when the Vietnam era jungle fatigues went out of service. A couple of years the banana PT shorts went out of service service and my unit on Sill used unit funds to issue the (then) new gray cotton PT uniform. About two decades later I'm at Bragg we we got we had to purchase the new PT uniform made out of nylon I guess.

Works well in urban environments, well in the Deseret etc after it gets a bit dirty and it looks like “background noise” in the woods it ain’t perfect but it’s actually pretty efficient especially under night vision

i used to think the uniform was useless, but over time i thought it was actually surprisingly effective. i’ve seen it in montana forests during winter or any season, and in Afghanistan, and like most camo’s, it really only becomes visible after movement. also, SF may have been the ones who introduced the velcro thing, but it was for being able to remove name patches and unit ID stuff, so they could put it on for garrison and take it off for field, i believe. The army followed their lead, as far as i can tell.

2. Sit shoulder to shoulder in any situation.
3. Take a knee "my ACU pants were awesome until I took a knee on patrol and the crotch exploded."
4. Needed to be stealthy guaranteed to snag Velcro on something if you were sneaking around.
5. Do any sort of work at all.

Yeah I never understood what the Army was thinking when they switched to this bs. At least the Marines had the sense to still use 2 different types of camo instead of this brain dead idea of trying to make 1 uniform work for all the different environments. To this day I still think the most effective camo patterns were made by the Germans in WW2.

My first Iraq trip was in 2005. That's when ACUs came out. The CG awarding out CAB (2005 Abu Ghraib activity) showed up in it bracing us for what was to come. I instantly knew some CG wanted a claim to fame in Army history.

But yeah, why would anyone issue this? At this point even Urban Camo blends in better to an environment than the digital ACU uniform. I actually received it as a gift from a family friend who knew I loved doing Airsoft and military larp, so he got the full uniform (shirt, pants, backpack and field cap) because he knows I love wearing military surplus in Airsoft (even though it makes me hotter than hell, probably cause my state is so hot). While at first I loved it and wore it, because it looked cool and made me feel like I looked like General Shepherd from MW2, but then I stopped and thought about it, and realized: when would this EVER be good? The desert camo I have is good on a playing field with more sand and nature, and the Urban Camo BDUs are good on more overcast days or when trying to be less noticeable in buildings, but this? It sticks out like a sore thumb. Honestly you all would have more luck using a hot pink Camo than this.
How about the Navy's blueberry camo? ... At least we know it blends in well with the water around us but... it's not a good idea to be blending into the water when there is nothing else but water and a ship in the middle of the ocean...

Camo in the navy, I mean if you want stealth in that, you just nuke everything from BVR anyway with some radar absorbing stealth vessel. Everything else is just a drop in the bucket when non nuclear vessels can be seen from space with the smoke they're bellowing.

I wore OD green fatigues and BDUs during my stint in the USAF, but I've seen photos of the ABU, and it was bad too. While the digital tiger stripe was nice, it to, had too much blue.
Ngl, I love the Navy Digital pattern. Not the best when you're overboard... but at least it looks good.

M81 Woodland mixed with DCU Tricolor still worked better than the UCP pattern. My father was in ST3 and even agreed when he jumped ship to the Army that he liked it better when he was in WOC school wearing the M81’s that it was better than the UCP.

I was in the NG during Desert Shield/Storm but didn’t get deployed. When they came back and could still wear their desert cams it was like a spit in the face to those of us in standard BDUs. It was even worse than not having that second patch.
