  • I was honored to be commissioned to reproduce the Chi Rho from the Book of Kells. In this first video I talk about the history of the piece-all done in one take without rehearsing, so please excuse the goofs!

very cool, i'm ashamed to say i'm Irish and have lived my whole life on the island and have never seen the book in person, i tried to once or twice but something always seemed to get in the way but i've loved the artwork of the book since the first time i saw it as a child. personal goal of mine to one day do my own large rendition of it, i also want to do a work with this as the first few letters of my name(christopher) and try keep in this celtic style and complete the rest of my name as best i can, i think it would be an interesting thing to attempt, though thinking about the number of hrs that is going to take is very very daunting lol.

I can't tell you how excited I'm am to watch through this process! I am currently taking a medieval art history class and we have spent weeks talking about The Book of Kells.

Wow. You have totally inspired me. Your work is amazing. You are VERY talented. I've been doing small A4 pieces with felt tip so far, but thinking about doing a big design soon.

Thank you! And that’s exciting to hear-I hope you are able to tackle a bigger piece soon, even if you are only used to smaller ones. It’s so worth the challenge! I learned so much through this process!

Oh god you need to brush up on history “Iona “in not the island of Ireland or another word for Ireland it’s actually a place in Scotland where it is said that the book was wrote. When the vikings attacked “Iona “in Scotland they fled to kells in Ireland where the book was finished

Yes this is correct. Iona of course is not synonymous with Ireland, but I misspoke in saying it was an Irish island. The book was begun in Iona and completed in Kells, and now is at Trinity College in Dublin. I’d encourage anyone watching this painting process who is interested in the Book of Kells to look up more information, with their resources as a great starting point!
