Matthew McConnaghey is & always has been a class act. We can ALL benefit from both his PSA and his Commencement Speech-I absolutely will, and if all people would keep an open mind, and BE what I call a “real person”, our nation can once again rise above the partisan, self serving place we have BEEN (in & out of politics) & return, at least a little bit, to the place our parents entrusted to us-a kinder, gentler time where reason & logic outweigh this illogical need to win at any cost, with no thought or care to consequence. I pray this with all my heart.
Lastly, I will give MY meaning of a “real person”-I do not care if you are red, white, purple, brown, I do not care if you are gay, straight, or any other sexual orientation, I do not care which side of the political aisle you are on or are not: to me, the “real people” that I have encountered in my 54 years are either nice, or not nice. Nice means being inclusive, being a good friend, being willing to listen to a friend in need, being willing if you are able to HELP anyone you encounter in need in small or big ways, appreciated by it or not-and NOT feel the need to laugh & gossip or brag about it later. Not nice, well-it’s just the opposite-people who are hateful, people who are kind to your face only to talk about you when you turn away, people who use you to get just ahead, people who are (to borrow from the film “Lincoln”) “with cold, hard hearts, impermeable to reason”, people who hate or try to oppress ANYONE simply for their sexual orientation, religion, or race-& please remember that whites are included in the equation who are “hated” upon-these people , to me, are not a “real person” whom I could turn to when I most need it.
Please-we MUST try to see that being RIGHT is not the only, best answer-sometimes, as you all know in your hearts, we have ALL been WRONG, and when we are wrong, own it. Be reasonable. Listen to the “other side’s” point of view-with an open heart-and I beg & pray this especially to our elected leaders in Washington-aren’t you tired of the posturing, the back room deals, the unfairness that exists on every level, the HATE and CONTEMPT for one another, and the fact that you are earning so much money while getting nothing done? I’m not talking about OUR President & the current narrative of his “supposed terrible reaction”-folks-HE HAS DONE A GOOD JOB IN AN UNPRECEDENTED, WORLDWIDE SITUATION. Just. Get. Over. It. PLEASE UNITE. If not for yourselves, for our children and theirs.
