  • In this video, hear from Hideo Ueda, lead developer of the original “Red Label” Yamaha FG180 launched in 1966, and Shingo Ekuni, lead developer of the reimagined FG Red Label series launched in 2019.
Experience the exciting challenge faced by Mr. Ueda as he helped lay the foundation and establish the quality standards for Yamaha acoustic guitars. Learn how the philosophy of “Quality First and Foremost” has been passed down and embraced by Mr. Ekuni in the development of today’s FG Red Label series.
The original FG180 quickly became one of the world’s most popular acoustic guitars. Yamaha’s uncompromising commitment to quality construction, exquisite tone, and easy playability prompted millions of players to fall in love with the original FG180 - guitars which are highly sought after even today.
Mr. Ekuni built upon this legacy and led his team to create the modern FG Red Label series, which took the guitars to even greater heights. His team incorporated the latest cutting-edge technology to further refine and enhance the tone, adding a pronounced and resonant bass with clear, warm highs.

My first real guitar was a Yamaha fg-180. It was purchased and given to me by my father in 1971 as a birthday gift. I was sixteen. It was a very nice instrument that I enjoyed for years. In 2016 I was able to acquire a 50th anniversary fg-180. It is indeed an even better guitar. I couldn't resist, so later I bought the fg5 and the fsx5. I have other instruments, but these Yamahas are pretty hard to beat. Thank you gentlemen for your great guitars. Happy birthday to me!

I treasure my FG-340, which I have owned for 35 years, and my more recently acquired FG-300. I am eager to try the new FG guitars, and I am glad to see they have been so true to their history and legacy.
It is a joy to hear these two craftsmen discuss these wonderful instruments--especially Ueda-san. He is humble, but it is good to see him recognized for his role in making music history. His work made quality guitars available to common folk without costing them a fortune. Arigato, Ueda-san, and Arigato, Yamaha!

Got mine few days ago. The bass on that thing...monster. The pickup...very natural sounding, great clarity. One flaw that it has to go on a setup because of the fret buzz on A string. I was planning to send it back on a store but I feel that she wants to stay :) And she will

Not sure if it was brilliance or dumb luck, BUT.... back in the early days of Yamaha, SOMEONE there decided to do 2 things that allowed old Yamaha acoustics to have a great "second life" (what I mean by this is that so many inexpensive acoustics are left in the closet tuned to pitch for 20 years which ultimately damages most of them beyond repair). The first thing they did is minor, which is THEY LACQUERED THE INSIDE OF THE BACK OF THEIR GUITARS, probably just to keep the label down. What this also did is give the back a slightly better reflective quality giving it a more complex tone and made it more resistant to moisture and impact. Now here's the big one... the amount of compensation at the bridge saddle is quite extreme compared to almost every other acoustics out there. What this amount of compensation does is allow for excellent low string intonation as the guitar shrinks, bellies and the neck angle shifts a bit over the decades. Many other guitars from other manufacturers leave the factory with insufficient compensation or just barely enough that as those guitars shift from age, the low E plays way sharp at the 12th b/c the string is no longer the correct length. IMHO, Intonation is everything in a guitar which is what allows it to chime chords well all the way up the neck. If you go the extra step and make a compensated saddle for an old Yamaha acoustic with its already steep saddle slot angle, you get an old player with excellent intonation. Yamahas kick but in this department!!! Not all Yamies can be brought back from the dead, but 8-9 out of 10 can be made to be an awesome player especially if you install a bridge truss. Brilliance or dumb luck, you decide.

I've owned a lot of guitars from entry level to higher end acoustics from Taylor, Martin and Gibson to name a few... but the best sounding acoustic guitar I've had was a 1968 Yamaha FG-180 which I paid $75 for and came with a glued CD as a pick guard. I regret trading it for a mountain bike.
