    i love that there was two fancy mowers cutting and then a fancy machine tedding(?) then a old tractor windrowing....even though im what would be considered young to some people i like seeing the older equipment getting use still

    Wow, I just cannot get over the modern specialized design which actually picks up the bales and neatly stacks them in the wagon. That's what I get for being an old gal who used to throw bales by hand up off the baler!!!

  • @larrylund2682
    @larrylund2682 Před 3 lety +7

    Way back when I was young and dirt was new, us young farm boys rode a hay rack and stacked the hay up to 120 per rack. Ten per day was the average. 3 crops per year and an eager baling machine owner greedy for money could line up 7 - 10 neighbors to custom bale for. Didn't matter to me because those farm wifes were the best cooks around. A penny per bale, a day in the dust and sun was the life I preferred. Much better choice over pulling weeds, picking rocks or fencing. None of those tasks came with a paycheck either. These days the only developed farm boy muscles are extraordinary thumb speed while typing on a mobile device. There will always be a few remaining traditionalists. But, that era has pretty much gone with the wind.

    Very nice video! Growing up on the farm my Dad had a 316 New Holland small square baler. I used to be a mechanic at a New Holland dealership and worked on piles of small square balers and of course the bale wagons! Almost everyone around around these parts have changed over to round bales or the large square bales.

    Neat video!! I'm in Northwest Ohio as well and just started farming a couple years ago. I actually grew up on a farm and spent my summers on a hay wagon. I always wanted my dad to buy a new Holland bale cart. I guess it was cheaper to have me on a wagon. LOL This will be my first year for hay on the farm. Nothing at all like your operation.

    • @beejaynz4285
      @beejaynz4285 Před 6 lety +1

      It is more of a "fluffer" than a tedder, as it keeps the rows intact, to me there is a lot of wasted drying area , but then again the weather they get there it would still dry very quick

    • @Jdrussellhay
      @Jdrussellhay  Před 6 lety +3

      We built the fluffer to keep the swaths intact intentionally. Typically our ground is wet when we cut hay. By simply fluffing the swaths and not covering the space between the swaths with a rotary tedder, we have dry ground to rake the hay onto the next day. If you rake hay onto damp or wet ground, you can't get the bottom of the windrow dry nearly as soon. We typically have very short windows of opportunity, and often a four day window becomes a three day window.
      We typically cut in the morning, we fluff the next day and we rake and bale on the third day. As any hay man knows, this can drag out days longer, depending on weather and time of year.

    • @huwbishop6995
      @huwbishop6995 Před 6 lety

      John Russell I hear you on that one. I live in West Wales and the weather has become so unpredictable that nobody does hay anymore. Most have gone to wrapped haylage as we typically only get two to three days between heavy rain. Very nice operation you have. Keep up the good work.
