  • The Detroit Lions were so bad in 1979 that they lost a game that they didn't even play in. Seriously. In week 14 of the 1979 NFL season, thanks to quarterback Jeff Komlo, they ended up losing the game between the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots due to one of the dumbest controversies in Monday Night Football history

The last time I thought about Jeff Komlo was when he was featured on "America's Most Wanted" as he was in Europe scrambling from US law enforcement. He died in Greece in 2009.

The coin landing on it's side is a major plot point in the classic 1939 film "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" starring Jimmy Stewart. Komlo was later convicted on 2 drunk driving charges, fled the country and was featured on "America's Most Wanted". He died in Greece in 2009 in circumstances that initially made authorities briefly think he was trying to fake his own death. Wow.

Incidentally, I worked with a guy in 2015 that broke his ankle playing ping pong. I know that he really did break it that way because I was the guy he was playing against. He went running to chase after a loose ball, stepped down wrong, and ended up in the hospital lol

As a Lions fan, I can certainly confirm that they have always found creative ways to lose.

Looks like he had trouble learning the playbook if he was throwing to players that badly.

First of all another PHENOMENAL video! I have a question not related to the video but it is about the Lions. On December 17,1977 ABC had a special edition of Monday Night Football on Saturday night. This game was the last game of the regular season and it was the Minnesota Vikings at the Detroit Lions at the Silverdome. Kickoff was at 10:00pm eastern time. I'm just wondering why did they make such a late time for Kickoff? Detroit is in the eastern time zone so that's a late start, but it was a Saturday night so that made it a little better with no school on Sunday and most people off on Sunday, but it's still a late time to start, and I was wondering if you know why they had a late start time? Keep up the AWESOME WORK!

The really sad part is, Komlo's 23 INTs didn't even lead the league that season! A whopping FIVE QBs actually managed to throw more including Bradshaw, Fouts and Brian Sipe.

The 39.6 passer rating is to NFL quarterbacks what the Mendoza line is to baseball.

Let’s see how good your football knowledge is. This would be the last time someone from the University of Delaware would fill in for an injured quarterback who later became a top football announcer for CBS.

During the video, you talked about trying to find resources to determine the outcome, if any, of the lawsuit that Fatheringham filed against Jeff Komlo. I haven't used it myself, but the only such resource I know of is called Westlaw. I became aware of it when I used a college library many years ago. However, I don't know if it still exists or if it can be accessed online or only in person; in other words, you may have to go to the Detroit area if you wish to use it in this particular case (no pun intended).

Request: Do "The Craziest CBS Announcers Schedule in NFL History" when announcers Jim Nantz and Tony Romo were supposed to call an NFL game played on January 1, 2023, between the Rams and the Chargers (both teams based in Los Angeles).
