- I started my journey to learn to play bowed psaltery about a year ago. Since I play by ear, I created this channel to help me remember songs that I've figure out. I learned what I know by watching others play on CZcams and I hope my willingness to share my journey encourages someone else. It is such fun!

Wow! This was absolutely beautiful!
Thank you for sharing this lovely music. 🎶
A new fan of this instrument psaltery. :)
Psalm 92
Thank you for your kind comments. I’m glad you like the psaltery.
Yes I’m here because of Psalm 150
I would like to learn to play
I am genuinely moved and impressed ... what a sound ... sounds like a voice ... with so much space within each note ... BEAUTIFUL!
Thank you
I can't love this enough. So beautiful.
Thank you
I inherited a Psaltery, not even knowing what it was or that it was called a Psaltery. So far this is the best example of the sound and quality. Your bowing is so gentle, the tone, so far, has been a little grating, but you play it so softly that it demonstrates the beauty this instrument can generate in the right hands. Well done!!!
Thank you!
I've gone through 3 different videos and this is the only one in which this darn instrument doesn't make my ears bleed. I don't know what it is about the psaltery, but the other covers all were physically painful despite how much I wanted to enjoy them
I agree. But I have learned there are different kinds such as, tenor, also, baritone, soprano. I would guess this is an Alto.
This might have something to do with how carefully "Learning the Strings" tuned up her bowed psaltery. Strings that are not carefully tuned can create an effect called "beating" (when sounded together). This is a bit dissonant & not all that pleasant. Perhaps that is what you're referring to as "making your ears bleed"?
Lovely. I play bowed psaltery. I saw someone playing it at a crafts show. He made dulcimers and bowed psalteries. I've never seen it played with two bows. Inspiring.
Thank you.
This is hauntingly beautiful.
This is so beautiful!! Thank you for sharing! Strange...all my housecats are suddenly gathered around my PC!! They love this! :-)
playerpianogal thank you for your kind comments
Thank you again. It is time to take out my psaltery. I loved the sound but needed to see someone else play.
i will like to learn to play this instrument
Oh, you play so beautifully!!
This is beautiful. I played a psaltery at primary school in the UK, and haven’t heard one since.
Thank you

I haven't seen or thought of using two bows in such a way. Really well done too.
Thank you
That is a beautiful instrument,I would love too learn how too play that!
Thank you!
I can see how the sound of this axe can irritate one's ear canal, but I can also understand why it is mentioned so many times in the Holy Bible. 😊🎶
Wonderfull, you are talanted person.
Jhonatan Scale thank you for your kind comment.
Lovely! I impulsively bought a bowed psaltery on Ebay which arrived yesterday. You have given me something to aspire to!
Thank you! Hope you enjoy playing as much as I do. I impulsively purchased one (my first) on eBay as well and learned to play by watching CZcams videos.
Do you have any favorite websites, videos, or books? I would love to find an active online forum or other community.
There is a Facebook group called “Bowed Psaltery Friends” to which lots of folks that I know who play bowed psaltery belong. I have met most of those friends at a bowed psaltery gathering (3 day weekend) at Cove Lake State Park in Tennessee. I’ve been for three years now and it is such fun. People of all skill levels come from all over and are such really nice folks. It’s always been in the fall but this year who knows if it can even happen. If you join the Facebook group it will be posted there. I play by ear so can’t help with music suggestions.
Good video! Since 2 days I have a Psaltery. But my bow is different. SIZE is like your bow but mine looks like a real Violine Bow and can Tiden or loose the horse hairs. But if I would holdout like a Violine bow my hand would be totally at the right side down and not little bit away from the end of the wood. Anyhow I try to find out which hand position is best. Greetings from Germany!
With a bit of fine woodworking skill there are plans in the Apl/May 20 edition of Woodcraft magazine for building one of these. It would not be too difficult but would require proper tools.
Super pretty thank you
Thank you
David will be proud. 💠🔘💠OldManRené💠🔘💠
Thank you
wunderschön
Thanks
Agradecida🌹💖
Thank you
Very nicely done! Sweet playing on a sweet & nicely resonant baritone bowed psaltery (BP)! Love the sound you coax from your baritone BP! "Ringing Strings" Bowed Psalteries did a great job making it!
I think you mentioned once that Rick Long came up with a tuning configuration that makes the key of "D" a bit less effortful to play in (not so much "crossing over" to "the other side" to get the F# & C# notes, I suspect). Can you describe what this different tuning configuration is? I realize that Rick also came up with a diatonic BP that plays in D major, so to make playing with mountain dulcimers tuned to "D" easier. But your BP clearly isn't just diatonic in the key of "D." Thanks!
Nice play!! Can you do bass at octave below? While at the moment you do slightly lower voice, which is awesome too!
Павел Сутырин thank you for your kind comments.
So Heavenly Angelic! Can you please tell me what kind of psaltery you are playing. I plan on buying a new one and don't know where to begin. Thank You
Bonnie this psaltery is a baritone psaltery made by Rick Long (Ringingstrings) and is tuned to the key of D. F# and C# are on the right side of the psaltery which makes it much easier to play with a local mountain dulcimer group I play with. It also has wrapped strings like a cello. I’ve had this psaltery a little over a year and I love playing it!
Danke
Thank you
Wow.
Thank you!
Thank you
Can you give a few pointers on playing with two bows?
Keep playing with one bow until you are very pleased with your technique - smooth transition between strings, no squeaks, consistent bow position. Then when you are ready begin with the second bow as a drone note. It just takes practice to train your brain to do two things at once. Good luck!
I like the lower tone alot. What is the name of this one?
It’s a baritone.
I can't see what you are using for a pick and where/how you are holding it while not using it. Could you elaborate on that? Beautiful playing!
Thanks for your kind words. I am using the end of a plastic children’s paint brush with the brush cut off. To play, I hold it between my ring finger and middle finger and hold it there while I use the bow. To pick I just pinch the end between my thumb and middle finger. However since I recorded that video I have found a better way. I found a pick called an “Alaska” pick. It fits on my thumb and doesn’t interfere with bowing at all but is readily available for picking. I hope this is helpful.
siameezerlady here is a link but you can find them different places. www.google.com/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwid8d_jxdjXAhXet8AKHUFYCAAYABAKGgJpbQ&sig=AOD64_0-wBh6ktv3fxAxiRPq2_1xhcoXlQ&ctype=5&q=&ved=0ahUKEwimq9jjxdjXAhVj7IMKHTrQADYQwg8INw&adurl=
Awesome, thanks for that :) I'm waiting to hear what the latest baritone psaltery from Rick Long sounds like and hope I can very soon start learning. I will look up that "Alaska" pick, as the two different sounds from the psaltery compliment very well. Thanks again...
siameezerlady Rick made mine in June of this year. It is a chromatic D and I love it.
Thanks very much for the link - yay for Walmart!
What type of pick is that at the beginning of the video?
Sorry I’m just seeing this question. It is just the end of a child’s plastic watercolor paintbrush with the brush end cut off. I use the pointed end to pick. You can purchase them in multiples in a package in any craft store.
Beautiful 😢so well played. Are you playing by ear or do you have sheet music?
I play by ear. Thank you for the kind words.
what is the brand of Psaltery?
It is a Ringingstrings Psaltery made by Rick Long in Clinton, TN.
I am thinking about buying one of these, don't suppose you can give Skype lessons?
The Art of April-Anna I’m actually quite new to this instrument. I have owned this baritone with the double bows a year this summer. I learned how to play watching CZcams videos. The reason I created a CZcams channel was to pass along what I have learned so I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Thank-you! :)
@@doublebowedpsalteryyou said how you tuned it to the keys you have listed? I am a new player and have LOTS to learn, but the sound is ear appealing for sure, how did you discover this? I am also a new Mountain dulcimer player of about a year on it, so much to learn!! I would be one of these that would take lessons for you! Thank you for sharing!! Blessings.
Nita King my psaltery was made in the key of D and is not returnable without breaking strings. It is fully chromatic so I can play in any key, just easier in the key of D. That just means that F# and D# are on the right side of the instrument making it easier to play in the key of D without crossing over to the left side. The reason I chose this Psaltery was I play with a dulcimer group who plays mostly in the key of D.
And while we’re at it…
You have a good touch on the instrument - good job. I think you should learn how to read music. I play classical guitar and read music well. I can go back 30 years and play pieces written down. I can still play them. Hammered dulcimer I played by ear. I have forgot most of the songs, difficult to bring them back without re-learning them. Just a benefit of reading music.
I actually can read music because I play piano and clarinet but I prefer playing psaltery by ear so I don’t have to find the score for songs I enjoy.
Is this a soprano?
It’s a baritone
It must be so painful to tune this thing
Not really that bad. Just takes a little while😊
