I made the perfect beach dress in an afternoon - the Tessuti Bondi dress in our cotton linen mix fabric. You can find the pattern and the fabric on our site (see links below).
Tessuti patterns are fast becoming my favourite indie sewing pattern brand. Their designs are timeless classics, simple and chic yet they always seem to have a clever construction or design detail thrown in to make them unique and special.
I made the Bondi dress in a size 8, I adjusted the back due to my high round back and forward shoulders (you can see a tutorial for how I do this below), I raised the bust darts 1/2" (although on reflection I think i probably didn't need to do this!) and I took 3/4" off the hem to make it a little shorter.
Our linen cotton mix fabric in coral was the perfect match and this is the third garment I've made in it (also a waistcoat in the navy blue and some shorts in the pink). It washes, sews, presses and wears beautifully.
The Bondi dress is a super simple loose fitting shift dress with bust darts for a good fit at the bust, which gives it all the shape it needs in my opinion. It has a racer back, centre front and centre back seams with top stitching details and the option for a fun frayed hem, which I decided to go for and am so glad I did. Not only is it a lot of fun to create, it also adds a fun element to the look of the dress and makes it very summer/beachy.
The armholes and neckline are finished with a bias binding and sewn inside the garment for a super neat finish. the insides of the garment are impeccably neat thanks to the construction. I used our Vilene bias tape to prevent the armholes and neckline from stretching out (see links below).
All in all I love this dress and wore it as soon as I finished it.

You look great in this dress! Showing my age here: I wore a similar design dress when I was in high school back in the late 60’s. That easy fit with natural air conditioning is always welcome when you live in Southern California 😉

Is it snug under the arms? It is a delightful dress.
Mine wasn’t, I had to add a little triangle of fabric to raise the lower edge of the armholes
Lovely summer pattern- to me it looks like the darts are sitting a bit high but you did say you adjusted the position but the armholes also look tight and causing drag lines - did you also make adjustments there?
I’m a beginner and I made it and it turned out lovely. Even added pockets and the fray hem 👍

I love this dress! You look adorable! I’ve cut mine out in pink linen, and I’ve just read all the instructions. Is there any reason that French seams would not work?
