    This week I'm thrilled to share my latest make the Lois dress by Tessuti patterns in this gorgeous polka dot viscose twill fabric, which was the perfect weight and has the perfect drape. As soon as I saw this pattern I feel deeply and madly in love with it and knew I had to make it. I felt the classic polka dot fabric matched the style of the dress perfectly and would mean it was a dress I would be reaching for, for years and years to come. As always I've linked everything below for you so it is easy to find.
    For an intermediate sewer this was a quick, simple sew with some thoughtful, unique design details. I loved the fact there is no centre back or centre front seam and that shaping at the side of the skirt is created with a dart at the hip. Even more interestingly the zip was inserted into one of these darts, which was a fun, new sewing technique to master and was a lot easier than I thought it would be thanks to the detailed and easy to understand instructions.
    I moved the bust darts more centrally and shortened them to fit my small bust better, but due to the shape and fit of the dress I could have gotten away without these adjustments. I also made my usual high round back and forward shoulder adjustments and have included links to tutorials for these below.
    I really love this dress and feel it is the perfect balance between elegant and casual and know I will wear it for many years to come.

    I’ve made five Lois dress and don’t ever put a zip in, this is hugely common with this dress, lots of people find there is no need for a zip. Thank you for taking the time to share

      So you can get the dress on and off without a zip as this is putting me off making it 😊

      Hi, it really is a super easy pattern to make up, if you have done some basic sewing previously, Tessuti have really excellent instructions, some of the best out there, I am an average size 16, not a huge bust, lots of ppl said they put the zip in on the first one, but never used it, due to the shape of the pattern the skirt area has lots of ease, so I just made one using some basic cotton, I didn’t need the zip, so since then I’ve never put one in, Yorkshire Sew Girl on her YT channel said the same as others have. Also the zip constructions is almost at the end and if you really needed to it put it in, you would be able to just undo the seam and pop one in.

    Love your videos - here in Australian I’m lucky to have Tessuti shops (actual shops!) the always helpful lady there said you don’t actually need the zip- so I’ve now made 3 of these- no zip required- just goes on over my head- straight size 8 👍

    It's a lovely pattern and looks fabulous on you. The thing that puts me off is the zip in the side seam. I am disappointed it only goes up to a size 16. I could grade up at least two sizes but, as I have to make bodice length and full bust adjustments it would become almost a redesigning! It is a shame, I love that dress!

    It's perfect on you Lucy! This made me reassess my thinking on this company. I'm just a little concerned with how low the v dips and if I'd unintentionally give people a peep show as I'm a bit bigger in the bust than you. haha

    • @ruthchapman3405
      @ruthchapman3405 Před rokem +2

      It would be easy to redraft the v higher. You just have to adjust the angle of the neckline

    • @debrariley2057
      @debrariley2057 Před rokem

      I have made lots of this pattern, and although I did think … oooh that’s a bit low, I carried on, most ppl say the same thing, and that is although it’s low, the construction of the neck binding means it does not gape, it’s very clever, as even when you bend forwards it sort of stays put, ! When I made the first one, I didn’t have tear away, so used woven interfacing cut in strips and ironed that in, because the interfacing was woven it’s blended into the construction and was great, the next make, I simply stay stitched almost all the edges as so much of this pattern has bias edges. Nothing stretched out or distorted, and that’s my preferred method now, a lot does depend as always on the fabric used.

  • @sheelaghhalstead4549
    @sheelaghhalstead4549 Před rokem +2

    It certainly is a lovely dress and the spotted fabric makes it so chic. I am curious about how you prevent the neckline stretching and gaping, especially as it's already fairly low? The bias tape doesn't sound substantial enough to stop any stretching.

    • @SewEssential
      @SewEssential  Před rokem +2

      It was bias strips of the fabric rather than bias tape, but I also stay stitched it (sorry should have mentioned that) The pattern suggests using interfacing I think, but I chose to stay stitch instead.

    • @WendyGouldin
      @WendyGouldin Před rokem +1

      Tessuti often use tear away vilene strips which I don't have or use but staystitching is a great alternative - thanks for the tip! I've made two Milendas and I love them and their patterns and instructions! @itsnevertoolatetocreate

    I’ve made that dress and love mine too! I’m bigger busted than you and it does show some cleavage. Also I didn’t bother to put in the zip, you actually don’t need it as there is enough ease in the pattern to just pop on and off without.
