This is concerning because the UK introduced a sugar tax on drinks a few years ago, which caused drinks companies to add artificial sweeteners, to compensate for the reduction in sugar.

As I said in another post, a lot of the harm of diet sweeteners is probably down to the body producing insulin in the response to sweet tastes, causing a drop in blood sugar, which could promote insulin resistance. The obvious way to prove is to do a randomised double blind placebo controlled trial, with capsules filled with sweeteners swallowed whole.

    • @richardcoughlin8931
      @richardcoughlin8931 Před rokem +7

My doctor advised me that insulin resistance was due to the large amounts of carbs in my diet, mostly bread and pasts but also some sugar. I cut out nearly all carbohydrates and substituted monkfruit with erythritol in place of sugar. (Please don’t lecture me on cutting sweet drinks out of my diet, cutting out carbs was hard enough.) Bottom line, after eight months I have lost 35 pounds and my A1C has dropped from 6.4 to 5.7 (it’s now in the normal range). I respect good research but in the final analysis what works or doesn’t work versus a control group may not reflect all individual differences. I know what works for me. By the way, there may be a conflict of interest, which Dr. Hansen should acknowledge, in criticizing artificial sweeteners while promoting his own profit-making weight loss regime using prescription drugs.

How are we still stumbling around with the wool over our eyes, rambling about calories? The hormonal model throws the idea that a calorie is a calorie right out the window. Every ingredient, every micro and macro, even the order of your meals all have various effects on your hormones, your microbiome, your organs, etc.
For instance: 2 studies demonstrated *"Food order has significant impact on postprandial glucose & insulin levels"*, even between the same exact isocaloric meals. Veggies & protein first = 36.7% less 60minute postprandial glucose rise, and 73% less time under the curve! The other study showed 40% difference vs carbs first!
Point #2: *"Effects of physical form of diet on body composition"*; simply turning 2 different types of feed for mice into powders caused them to gain 85% more fat-body mass ratio, and DOUBLED (200% ^) abdominal adipose, by eating just 11% more... likely because they were hungrier. Think of processed carbs like cereal, crackers, pancakes, pasta, bread, muffins, bagels, etc.

It's pretty easy, the increased feeling of hunger in relation to hormone levels. When you use artificial sweetners your brain still gets the "we've got energy to spend" signal, but the energy isn't there which makes your stomach try to get that energy, which isn't there. Which in turn means you have an increased feeling of hunger which translates to eating more. At least that's what I found based on research that I did as I myself got significantly more more hungry after drinking pepsi (which here in Europe went to a low-sugar variant to avoid added tax in UK law).
I initially drunk pepsi as a replacement of coke as it had roughly half the sugar without artificial sweetners (and I hate the artificial sweetener taste), but after they switched to low-sugar recipe I got notably more hungry. Even directly after a decent meal I noticed I would be hungry almost immediately rather than hours after. This in turn got me to eat more than I normally would to get rid of that hunger.
While artificial sugar might be great for dieting if there would be no effect on any other dietary choices, in reality it gets people to eat and drink more nullifying or inverting the actual caloric profit you get.

I very much doubt any zero calorie sweetener is harmless, irrespective of whether it's natural, or artificial. Some such as sucralose might be, but it's probably the body's physiological response to sweet stimuli, without receiving an equivalent level of sugar, which causes the damage, rather than the chemical itself. There's evidence to suggest sweet flavours stimulate the production of insulin, which would lower the blood sugar level and could promote insulin resistance.

There is actually NO evidence supporting the notion that sweet flavors trick the brain into telling your pancreas to produce insulin, as insulin production is a chemical response to sugar actually being in your system. You need to realize that if non-nutritive sweeteners were actually capable of triggering an insulin response, every type 2 diabetic would hypo after drinking even a single diet or zero sugar beverage. And since I AM a type 2 diabetic who monitors their blood sugar every single day, I will flat out tell you non-nutritive sweeteners have no affect on my blood sugar levels at all in either direction. I do not go hypo or hyper after consuming them. This video is perpetuating myths that have no conclusive studies backing up the claims. And seeing as I consume non-nutritive sweeteners and am a controlled type 2 diabetic with normal blood sugar levels without being on medications, I'm inclined to believe what's before my eyes rather than a bunch of inconclusive observational studies.

Like Dr. Hansen, they will tell you what’s bad but are weak on recommending what’s good. Of course, “more work needs to be done.” In science, it is good to do the work first and then publish or try to scare people.

There is limited scientific evidence to suggest that sucralose, a low-calorie artificial sweetener, may have some impact on gut health, but the research is not conclusive, and more studies are needed to fully understand the potential effects.
Some studies have suggested that sucralose may alter the gut microbiota, which could have implications for gut health. However, the results are mixed, and the significance of these changes is not fully understood. The impact of sucralose on gut health may vary from person to person.
It's important to note that sucralose is generally considered safe for consumption by regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) when used within acceptable daily intake levels. These agencies have reviewed the available scientific evidence and determined that sucralose does not pose a significant risk to human health.

It was an observational study. Yikes.

Why did the FDA approve all these poisons?
I remember when saccharine-sweetened Tab soda was popular and had a lot of friends addicted to the caffeine and ghastly overly-sweet flavor. Aspartame was supposed to be better…if you like sudden diarrhea. Sucralose is another unappealing chemical flavor, which makes me personally crave salty foods to get that taste out of my mouth. I once liked Xylitol, but it is expensive and very poisonous for dogs. My own eldest brother died with a drawer full of Snickers and a fridge full of diet sodas…and he never recovered his ability to walk, after “dieting” for 50+ years.
I’m sticking with 2t. honey 🍯 from a local beekeeper for my morning coffee..it’s the only sweet beverage worth drinking, and literally all I need to get through my day. Occasionally, I substitute real maple syrup from a family farm, when the honey’s scarce.
Water is life, and more importantly a pretty good aid to digestion and health maintenance. We need to protect our water quality, and drink more of it.

Not citing the sources on this was not great. I have questions about the methodology used in your study regarding dna. My biggest question being, how are they measuring the amount of that chemical being created in our gut? How are they measuring how much is absorbed?
I have these questions because for them to measure the chemical with certainty they'd have to extract it. Which makes me wonder if they're extracting it, was it ever absorbed in the first place? We have a whole bunch of things floating around in our blood, but our dna is very safely tucked away in the nucleus of our cells. So this supposedly harmful chemical needs to be absorbed by our gut, allowed into our cells, and then make its way into the nucleus. That's a lot of assumptions.
