For someone looking to go to Japan for the first time, keep in mind that Hyperdia mainly just tells you what trains to take between stations (at least that's what I used to use it for), so if you're just wondering how to get from where you're standing to where you need to go, Google Maps can be better for giving you all those little details (especially walking directions). I think both have pros and cons, but they don't necessarily fill the same need so it's hard to say one is unequivocally better.

123newjob I agree, I used Google Maps hours of every day and to narrow down my choices. HYPERDIA didnt seem as useful except it did allow you to filter out Shinkansen that weren’t covered by the JR Pass.

Not sure if you've talked about this in one of your videos before. Was it because, just in case you lose your phone, you still have Suica separate from your phone? Anyways, excellent video again! You need to chill. I mean moving to Tokyo is pretty nice, but if you aren't white (as in European looking) I highly recommend moving to just Tokyo or Osaka. My dad questioned if the nuke did something to the water, that is how shitty and depressing it was. I didn't understand till I lived there for 4 years.

Yes, on the escalator etiquette only slow/stand on right and pass on the left…just like we drive in the States. Of course, not everyone is aware or onboard with this etiquette here, but most are, especially those who travel a lot because of the airport etiquette.

    • @BEFreda

Man...So jealous. Apps would have been so helpful when I was there around 1989. We stared at the token machine for the subway forever trying to figure it out. A wonderfully nice Japanese man saw us huddled around and spoke to us in English, asking if he could help. He showed us how everything worked, how to pick the correct subway line, etc. He even rode the subway with us to our stop, passing his, then rode back to his stop. He wanted to make sure we got off at the correct stop.

I was very nervous navigating my family holiday through the trains but surprisingly we never got lost with the trains (only got lost when we were walking) because like you said there are signs EVERYWHERE. Even during rush hour, the etiquette of the people and efficiency of the trains makes the whole experience so much more bearable (rush hour in London on the other hand is TERRIBLE)!

LoveLyzKelly will do! I’m not sure if you’re comfortable with meeting up with your fans in Japan, but if you happen to be in the area when I’m there I’d love to meet up with you & meet you! 🙂 I’m going to a few places, Odaiba, Kyoto, Akihabara, Tokyo & Nara!

I really loved watching this video. Thank you for sharing!
Japan's transportation system is definitely one the best out there. More spontaneous "hidden alley" food restaurants please :)

Ms. Lovely Lyz….I have enjoyed and learned so much about Japan from many of your videos.
I was born and raised in East Lansing, and got my MA at Michigan State, where my dad was a professor. He usually visited Japan twice a year, and helped set up the Japanese Marketing Association. He also often spoke at Japanese universities and corporate conferences. Every year we would host his Japanese students for Thanksgiving and other holidays, and they were truly quite fun and wonderful people.
I had not thought of experiencing Tokyo, until I saw your videos. I have a bit going on here with an upcoming book and cd, but hope to visit Tokyo. This is what I know though....before I visit Tokyo, I will watch as many videos of yours as I possibly can!
BTW, I like it when there is truth in advertising, as your screen name with the word "lovely", accurately describes who you are, both inside and out! I thank you for sharing your world, with....the whole rest of the world!
I will end with my favorite quote...."Follow your dreams, and enjoy the trip". That, LovelyLyz, is something that you are doing quite well!
    Best wishes always,
    Randy Lazer

Ahh! At 5:37 when you're scrolling through I saw the exact train station I used when I stayed with a host family (Saginuma-eki). I had to transfer at Mizonokuchi to go to school :) So nostalgic. I think the river you were at was near where I went to school (Tama high school). It's so neat seeing this place in your videos over a decade later

First: Ash is amazing. Like, I don’t need to tell you, because you already know, but you are so lucky to have a friend like him! It’s super important to have one of those friends who always knows just where to go or to just explore and eat with. It makes being anywhere an adventure. ❤️
Second, I hope Kel is doing okay. 😕 Fingers crosses things get better for him soon.
Third, I’m still terrified of the train system. Like, in a good, excited way. I know it’s just one of those practice things, but even not having a job in Japan yet, I’ve had nightmares of not having enough time to practice it before work starts and being late to work and just wanting to die on the spot.
That said, I love train travel! As far as I’m concerned, it’s the best way to travel. Especially long distances, when the whole country just falls out before you in a beautiful panorama that somehow feels as if it were just for you. I can’t wait to get lost in Japan.
What’s the worst “lost” experience you’ve ever had?

Kudos to you for top-level opsec with regards to where you live. Here you are trying to educate folks on life in Japan and have fun at the same time, and some chinpira want to stalk you. Stay vigilant my friend. I’ve been here for a few decades and I applaud the women who keep a certain discipline about who they are. Oh, btw, excellent-rippa on the transfers. Enjoy Japan, it’s been my first love since 1991!

Same thing here in germany with the escalator just that its standing on the right and walking on the left. But this is mostly in big cities like in Hamburg. The more size decreases the more chaos increases.
