Episode 26

Literally spat my food once he said he'd take the deal. WTF
Same!!!!
Bro had an appraiser come in and tell him they are real and his response is “yeah this is a massive risk”😂😂😂
Only 50k for original baquiat? What a fool.
no only 50k for 3 original basquiats lmao
THREE (3)!!!!!😭😂😭😂😭😂😭
Stupid
It's fake lol, he's not stupid, he's so smart at faking something valuable
For 3 lol.. Not one
He got ripped off LOL
He actually ripped them off, those are fake postcards. They are worth shit.
He ripped them off, Those are fakes made by a forger named Kevin Doyle. Look him up
actually, he ripped Pawn Stars. Those were fake Basquiats. Had they been real he would have had them appraised long before he stepped into the pawn shop. The so called friend lied. Basquiat never painted on his postcards. He drew and collaged them. He also never ever wrote SAMO or drew crowns on them because he didn't start to paint until much later.
I just looked at KD replications I guessed every one correctly a fake versus the original. There is a controlled look to the KD paintings. They are good no doubt but just have that look of trying to convince
Needed the fast cash. Pawn business bruh lol
Meh, he could have sold it for $200,000+ at an auction. Even after auction fee he could've easy got $130,000+. I know it's a little tedious process but he would have got around 2.5x the money this baldy gave him.
Those are fakes made by a forger named Kevin Doyle. Look him up
You’re absolutely right in fact he may have gotten even more at auction because one of Basquiat’s paintings sold for $113 million. He could have gotten maybe $200,000 a piece.
This baldy just gave him 60k of his hard earned cash. It's upto the guy how much he sells his stuff for.
Do you know that for sure? Do I have to google it now?
Key word being Could Have
I have the original bona fide mona lisa, how much will you give me? I can give you $5,000. Massive risk, gotta get it framed, not sure of the artist.
Lol
“It’s gonna sit in my shop for who knows how long...”
He clearly didn’t obtain these legally, because if he did, he wouldn’t pass up 100k$ extra by selling them through auction (minus 30% fee)
Not exactly, if he obtained it illegally it would be just as bad to sell it to a pawnshop since they catalog every item pawned and bought and have it checked by the police. He didn't go through with the auction because he had no papers proving its legit and the risks of auctions as well
Naw he's just filthy rich
If they're really by Basquiat they'll have his fingerprints and DNA on them.Basquiat's paintings now sell for more than a million dollars a piece.
This is so fake, no one is going to a pawn shop with basquiats and even if they did they would bring real experts
@@TheGoddessonfire everything in the show is fake lol
That guy is selling the artwork has to be a crackhead
Yes definitely a million a piece.
Out of all the clips I have seen about this show, this is one of the weirdest. Now I understand that with owning items worth so much money, comes a certain level of pressure, but this dude was told to his face that he could get $50k for each of them, so $150k for all three, and even with a 30% fee he would still get $105k. Even if they under-sold, there is no way they'd sell for as low as $17,000 apiece. So, either this guy is stupid, impatient, or has a lot of money and therefore doesn't really care.
he accepted it because he knew they were fakes. The show likely will never admit it, but they got hosed.......
or maybe the whole thing is just staged, think about it
@@terrytrekas5730 that is very possible. The things the "friend" pointed out aren't difficult to fake.
Remember this is a tv show and probably they are actors
it’s staged
"We were both young, very much the same age"... That's a next level genius statement right there
But did they get along famously?
Mi p right like what is so genius about that statement? Lol 😂
@@kolbyorozco9494 Ya'll need to put your thinking caps on.
Jake Cooper elaborate?
@@kolbyorozco9494 Ok, well a thinking cap is a metaphorical device that suggests going outside of the box and looking at something from other angles. There's no actual hat to put on, although there's no reason why you couldn't put on a hat of your choice if it helps the process.
30k a piece.. Im taking a huge risk, how about $10?
"I'm taking a huge risk here! They're worth 150k, but I'm taking a massive risk doubling my money here, so you need to go lower. It's such a huge risk for me, you know."
Good thing he's got one Basquiats friends in the neighborhood...
lmao
....WHY would he go to "pawnstars" to sell art?
“Me and Mr. Basquiat got along famously.”
He turned and threw a pass and I caught the ball myself.
Wow you're fun at parties
@@boonetyler656 Sounds so fun...
One of Basquiat's paintings sold for $110,000,000, .....think about that for a minute.
Smart exchange there on both their parts. Basquiat was a genius. I wish he was still around to reap the rewards of his masterpieces.
Agyepong Boateng agreed. Well he was sold a painting for a couple million while he was still alive
He is one of the few great artists who actually saw some monetary success while he was alive. Not to the degree for which he sells now, but that price point is partly because he is no longer alive.
1:13 Wow, look at the shade lines of the seller. Epic.
I would never sell a Basquiat piece dudes crazy.
ikr!
Painted those in his home last night. The next day in the pawn shop "50 k that's a tough one......let's do it"
Those look like the fake Basquiats that Kevin Doyle was selling. The postcards Basquiat made don't looks like this. They were Xerox copies of collages. These look like someone trying to imitate his later canvas paintings.
also Basquiat never signed that JMB nonsense on the front.......
Where did you find the info on “Xerox copies of collages”? Thanks!
Rick done heaps well. Basquiat sells like crazy.
Love it or hate it one things for sure. This show is fun to watch.
i remember reading about how he’d sell post cards and just seeing a small image. i’ve googled and never been able to find an image. i can’t believe how i missed this
I would have said "I'll give you 2 for 50k but I'm taking all the risk" 🤣🤣
This is cool to see stuff that would end up in Christie’s or Sotheby’s on Pawn Stars
Hes rocking a big sunglasses line there
Those aren’t real, cause the artist never cared for perfection or symmetry but the eyes on the face painting had eyes the same size
Just think... If he would have kept them, they'd be worth $1mil a piece right now. One of his paintings sold for $117mil at the end of 2018.
...the f.b.i. just closed an entire museum exhbition of phony basquiats.
They're fake
Remember, it's staged!
How so?
The actual worst part of it it's that its real... I wish it was staged
The expert called in the expert
Of all the deals on the show, this is the saddest of all.
The friend of the guy whose art is being sold just happened to be in the experts shop on the day the art is being sold. I think they're right, those who say the show is faked.
Todd no last name who said he was with the expert at the time?? And if he was, have you heard of coincidence??? How do you know he didnt call his friend and told him to meet at the pawn shop? You are naive and made assumptions before thinking.
They never looked at the age of the medium or the amount of oxidation due to age
he obviously needed money.
"I dont want to keep going to every pawn shop "(for an extra 100k) = " i have a serious gambling problem, and I need the money now"
These were all fake Basquiat postcards. Pawn Stars got ripped off. Reasons: Basquiat did not paint on his postcards but drew and used photocopies. He didn't try painting until mid 1981. He also didn't write SAMO © on postcards. He wrote them on walls with Al Diaz (co-creator of SAMO concept). Basquiat also didn't draw crowns or heads on postcards only small texts and photocopy collages. Something wasn't right with this transaction and everyone was probably in on the deal including the pawn shop. Hype!
yayayaya cocococo the show is fake
yayayaya cocococo hmmm
yayayaya cocococo lol idiot
Literally Basquiats friend was there to verify that was something he would have done.
Complete fakes.
Hes like ohh i can buy coke with that!! Lets do it!!
damn rick is so tight
These are NOT real. JMB's postcards did not involve paint because he could not afford paint at the time. They picture/ xerox and drawing collages. This guy won the day!
Bro stop... he stole paint like the rest of the graffiti artists of the 80s in NYC... I know because I was one of them.
He didn’t even try to bargain. Had he done that, I’m sure he could have gotten a little more.
that dude with the beegees mouth! lol
They are worth MILLIONS!!!!! EASY.....
I wouldve held onto them for like 2 more years
Smart move is to never give away a Basquiat artpiece, such from a legend and his pieces are rare anyone can paint/draw just like him and call it theirs..
He needed some drugs or was in some serious debt to someone to sell Those for that cheap
I think it was drugs hahaha
Crack
he should've tried for at least 60k-75k... 20k-25k a piece, Rick would've done it I think...
There's NO WAY! I would've left & taken them to an Auction or Art Gallery. Rick is always low balling people.
every transaction Rick does is a "huge risk".. "im paying 50K but they are worth 150K , im taking a huge risk" lol
[?] Question Block “best I can do is 50 bucks man...”
Imagine being an expert of your friend
Rick makes 100 grand, just DO NOT EVER DO BUSINESS WITH HIM AND YOU WILL BE OKAY
Can’t believe he let these go for 50K! Wow. Definitely could of made quadruple.
he would have made ZERO because Sothebys or Christies would have known in 5 seconds that these were fakes......
Why didn’t he just consign it to an auction house? That’s exactly what Rick was going to do (or did).
He lost $150K I think...Those are worth at least 100K each...
bring this back
Rick is apparently not a fan of Basquiat.
Don't be a fool. If he did like him the guy would've asked for more.
This dude wore sunglasses for so long they left a tanline on his face.
Anyone else notice the sunglasses tan?
I need to open a pawnshop
Love that they were forged. This was one of their biggest losses.
Doubt it
Agreed. With no paperwork to prove it
Yes that was to new lookin
how can you tell
@@alon403 There are a few articles about it.
Lmao he got lowballed so bad by Rick.
Was it just me who thought that was a portrait of Rick from Rick And Morty? haha
NY died in 1988?
A 3 year old can make drawings like that.
That's not about the paintings, the painter is very succesful and his paintings sold at 100 million $
fjvideo where did you get your degree in art history?
But a 3 year old didn't
killer sungalsses tan line
R.I.P Jean
Man took that money and ran. He knew they were fake. That's why he took the cash really fast!😂😂😂😂
85 percent of the frickin time they reject you and I watched like 50 plus and this is my first time watching something get sold
Those are fakes made by a forger named Kevin Doyle. Look him up
the seller looks like geordi with that tan line
Interesting pieces of art !
it hurts me when people do deals w paanshops specially this one...but nescesaty is a sharp sharp needle.
Nice sunglasses tan
Horrible deal. These post cards from Jean-Michel Basquiat can easily get him $500,000 at an auction in a few years.
I WOULD NOT give those up.
MR. BROWN & I GOT ALONG FAMOUSLY
Mr brown mr brown my head is about to burst😱
These looked like they were paint by preschooler and they worth 100K+ lol
HOT AIR!!!
something like this should have been sent to auction .
Mr Brown and I got along famously
Do you have any paper work so I can tell you it,s not reliable
Bro just got low balled for a fortune
Rick soaks another customer. Each of those could have cleared 100k each now.
Finaly they get to wear gloves!!!!
I THINK they are 100% correct
KING
Those are definitely not JMB
I thought the same thing when I saw this on TV and the more research I did the more it confirmed haha. I'm a huge Basquiat fan and especially had always been interested in the early postcards because of how young and unknown he was at the time and NONE that i've ever seen looked like those. They took amalgamations of all his whole career and put them together
100% EBAY FAKES. THEY ARE ALL OVER EBAY FOR 50 BUCKS AND THE NEVER ENDING SUITCASE STORY.
@@seankeane7055 what are the telltale signs that the postcards are a fake? What about those bearing a Gerard Basquiat CoA?
@@swingaporean If you google Basquiat postcards you can see that the style he was using at that time for those was completely different. These pre-date his success as a painter. They were done partly as a collaboration with an artist whose name escapes me right now, Jen something? Anyway the style was mostly xeroxes with painted and drawn embellishments. I've seen a bunch of Basquiat exhibitions and am specifically fascinated by the postcard project as there's not as much info out there about them. All the postcards I've seen do not really feature his painting style.
The other tell tale sign in these is that SAMO was never something he wrote on paintings. This was an art project with a friend (Al Diaz) that become a graffiti art project. Basquiat eventually ended the project and never carried it over into his studio art. Finally they just don't look quite like Basquiat. As easy as it can be to take his naive style and replicate it, there is a certain quality that these just lack. They seem to just throw the crown, the black faces, SAMO, and the postcard mythology into one cluster of Basquiat tropes. Jean had a bit more style than that
@@seankeane7055 thanks for your reply! (Really) much appreciated :) is there anything you know about the CoA by the estate of JMB, which are signed by Gerard Basquiat (his father)? I’m guessing these are easy to copy too…? Is it known until when Basquiat made these postcards? I have one dated 1983…
Red flag. No paper work
They are fake, made by forger Kevin Doyle.
But i mean even if there wasn’t, basquiat was handing out his artwork like candy. It wouldn’t have been too out of the ordinary for a piece of basquiat to randomly surface, even today never before seen SAMO graffitis still sporadically surface in new york lol
Sooo Fake !! DOYLE strikes again !!
These people don't know shit. I wrote a comment explaining the whole fake Kevin Doyle thing and they deleted my comment, guess they don't like to know when they been fucked by a forgery.
These idiots dont know about kevin Doyle Forgeries. lol Idiots!
@@captainmarvel9981 Can't you just put a link to a source? Instead of writing 10 comments. I tried to find it on google, but couldn't. I don't feel like doing 20 searches to find did he really scammed them.
@@milosjazic7453 It's not hard to google Kevin Doyle = basquiat Rip off report
YIKES! Worst deal I've seen on this show yet. Basquiat is a cut above even Warhol as an artist and these postcards would've went gangbusters at an Auction in NYC or LA. I wouldn't have sold them for under $125K.
I wish I knew wha I know now and could go back and find him on the street corner in the 80's and buy a whole stack of these from him for like $100😄
No way I would sell all three of them if they were original Basquiat's worth 50k each. The guy took the deal way to quickly which means they are fake.
He took
50K for 3 Basquiat postcards?
Uh oh...someone's got a gambling problem!
Nobody from us could pull out 50K for them in 2-3 minute, so lets all together shut up and respect Rick this time
One born every minute
So, setting aside that this is television and tends to distort reality-- selling expensive art to a pawn shop for example --I imagine the seller could have gotten more money from Rick on this deal.
Auctions are not guaranteed and commissions would have been deducted from the $150k, so that figure is merely a starting point. The real issue is that the seller did not make Rick adjust his initial offer. The seller came down 21% from his original price and then immediately accepted the $50k without asking what more Rick could pay or even trying to squeeze another $5k out of him. This is just really poor negotiation skills.
If Rick was unwilling to offer more, the seller could have always walked away from the deal temporarily to play hardball. I'm sure Rick would have paid the at least same amount the following week, if not more after a week of second guessing himself a bit.
Wow shows how much I know about art I would of only paid 20 bucks each for them lol
That’s a problem. Yup. How much? Whoa! No. Great Art.
He took 50k for something worth 150k? When you consider that he can show no chain of ownership and no documents, I think they are probably fake. How the expert "confirmed" the authenticity was pretty ridiculous. I mean it can't be that hard to imitate how Basquiat did his "M"s and "O"s. and the story. Oh, "He left it on the train". So elaborate. Jeez.
hebat...mantap
“Ohhh ignorant art Bruno”
I would never bring these little paintings On postcards to a pawnshop dealer! You take these to an art dealer, art auction or maybe Sotheby’s. And of course this guy who owns the pawnshop is not going to pay out 30,000 per painting. Also it is common sense to have paperwork representing the artwork as proof of genuine work. Even if it is the real work from Basquiat. Pawn shop owner lost 50,000, that’s how I see this.
