Unfortunately all the elegance and good proportions of the previous Passat are gone. This one looks chunky, bulky with really long overhangs in the front and rear. Technically it's probably a better car but it is far less attractive and charismatic than the previous generation.
At least it doesn't seem to have 20 different random beeps and pings to 'welcome' you into the car or tell you it has no idea where the lane you're following is like a lot of the Asian cars are doing.
@autogefuehl Do you know why VW has stopped using the rear VW Logo as trunk open? Backup camera under the badge was one of the best implementations. Why have they stopped that? You don't see it in ID.7 or B9 Passat for instance.
I don't like the front/hood of the new series, looks too much like the Golf front, and well I am old fashioned I guess. Got the previous Passat with the analog meters, somehow for me it is more classy then a full digital cockpit.
I have a MK7 Golf and to me this Passat looks very much alike from the front. Definitely need more differentiation between model families and generations in the looks department.
Very good review, not too much information for a regular drivers, very good job which really helped to understand more about new Passat and compare to previous one.
The gap between Volkswagen and other cheaper alternatives and the "premium" brands like Merc and BMW is getting small. The only thing missing is the RWD drivetrains and better engine options.
Is leather really less sustainable than plastic covered "vegan" leather (basically rebranded PVC), which needs more chemicals to produce and will land in a depot and polute the waters after some years..?
I'm pretty sure what qualifies as leather as used in car seats that aren't coachbuilt Roll Royce style is a long way from biodegradeable natural leather anyway. The best reason to continue using leather is that no demand for leather will turn it into waste from the beef industry rather than all the resources used to grow the cows going to meat only, making beef even more wasteful. If cows were being farmed for leather first and meat second then I'd be all for cutting leather usage, but it's being produced as a side effect of the meat industry, so the meat side of the industry will continue to lay waste to the planet whether the leather is used or not.
Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment. You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. The classic approach is using oil/plastic as source material. Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic. So the overall plastic share for the seats is very low and it is at this moment the most efficient way to produce a car seat. A couple of litres of fuel equals a car seat basically. So if you want to save oil/plastic, rather look at consumption for energy, fuel and heating and to other car parts than the seat. Note that animal skin leather also always contains a plastic coating for durability. However, long-term we should of course find raw oil alternatives. So going further, seats can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even increased share of plant-based materials (like pine oil, canola oil or start-up materials like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum, so be seen at czcams.com/video/S1aNZeoatmE/video.html). On a calculation base, by ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en) - and that is a very conservative calculation. So it is at this moment the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable. A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: czcams.com/video/1pRNkW9nrrw/video.html And the Kia EV9 with plant-based oil share: czcams.com/video/6vXePQi_MAk/video.html New leatherette materials can be superior in every aspect, even for cleaning: czcams.com/video/u94YXJ72UTA/video.html More and more natural materials are rising: czcams.com/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/video.html Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: czcams.com/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/video.html For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: czcams.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/video.html Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally. In a high animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the "first" misuse case, the hide remains a profitable body part. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the primary use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse? Remember that animal skin leather is no different to fur, fur is just leather where the hair is still on. And fur is widely not accepted for clothing anymore, and of course not for cars. We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future. I've also switched back from a SUV to a normal fastback car and realized: I was driving a worse car in all aspects just for the ride height (which also turned up being more uncomfortable for me on long drives).
hope they bring a true Passat R as a successor to Arteon R shooting brake, sadly they discontinued😢. i mean in older generation they already had a R from passat the Passat R36 with 300hp so it would be nice to see again a R version from Passat😎 and honestly the front looks better with r line design. the elegance doesnt look good in my opinion.
Funny how one of the trim lines is called elegance, when there is none elegance at all. At least the last generation had some moderate class, sharp lines, and looked somewhat grown up. This now looks like a early 2000’s Ford mondeo or something to come out of china 😅 vw and bmw are really struggling in the design department these last couple of years.
I like it. I seem to be the only one here but i like it. Im not saying uts better looking than the old one, this one definitely looks younger and sportier but some people might prefer a more mature car, like the previous gen was. The interior and the increased size is the problem. How much longer will they get? 10cm every 8yrs, it will be a boat in 2-3 decades.
Thanks for the movie, as always great job! Thomas, do you know what is the durability of the DCC pro dumpers? It cost a lot but will it last longer than normal dumpers?
Maybe car reviewers will start growing a spine and start reviewing the normal gas or diesel engines and stop acting as employees of the car manufacturers and stop pushing their plugin / electric agenda.
Thomas, I test drove a Passat but I decided to buy a Mercedes-Benz sedan--der M-B Wagen ist besser gebaut. You pay more but you get what you pay for. Jedoch ist ein Volkswagen auch gut gebaut--Deutsch gemacht. Also, in your last video Lia had some on-camera time. Du solltest das öfter tun--sie macht deine Videos viel besser. 😉
Can Passat catch up with Audi A6? Well I think Passat this generation looks so young, it doesn’t have the sense of composure of large vehicle like Audi, at least from exterior feeling. In our china especially in the northern , Passat is seem to be a symbol of good taste and modesty, especially for those who employed within the governmental or institutional systems. We Chinese have a meme: A man with black Passat can conquer any mother-in-law.
Its incredibly frustrating how every single car company keeps trying to move "upmarket" I could literally scream in frustration Everyone is completely aware how the future keeps getting worse and the economies of major countries arent doing well. Car prices have far out paced what real people are making. Plus all these gimmicks are just more nonsense to break. They truly want to pretend cars are like basic appliances that if they break arent a the biggest hassle. Cars are very important and not cheap enough to be throwaway items. Maybe it will be good if Chinese cars are only 10k and easy to break. That seems to be what automakers want. No wonder there is so much push against cars these days. Automakers have lost the plot. VW is not the peoples car anymore.
@krane15 True. I think we are constantly use to more and more with each new iteration of things. Eventually it will all break down however. It is definitely difficult to step back from the all the features you know and get into something more stripped down. But at the rate everything is going thats gonna be the outcome.
A very detailed video Thomas. The updated technology sounds great. The size of the Passat is now too much for my needs, so I hope VW bring back the Golf wagon into Australia for the next model, with these updated tech. Mariposite green is my pick of colours.

How? External design language is basically the same as Tiguan and previous models. Internal also completetly different than Skoda - so where is that influence exactly?
@@pavelholub8668 I'm pretty sure VW did the umbrella in the door first, but Skoda tended to put it in without the buyer having to specifically pay extra to get it (Which is part of the reason there are so many people with poverty spec luxury cars as they get the badge, while the budget cars get the spec). More useful and missing from the VW range is the LED torch that acts as a boot light when clipped in position in the boot and is kept charged from the car battery. It even has a magnetic base so it can be stuck to the car when required if you need to check the car at night.

I prefer this one to my current passat gte way more elegant and more comfortable. The only problem is the lack of awd like my current passat variant gte.
I have a choice of 1.5 eTSI and 2.0 TDI both in 110kW to chose from as a company car. Which engine from these two you recommend? Any experience? Thank you.
Another great review Thomas, danke. Love the end. I am one of those waiting for the new Superb or Octavia VRS driving review. Personally don’t understand why someone will go for that Passat if you have Superb on the market.
It's got to the point that Passats are selling second hand cheaper than similar mileage and age Superbs where I live because the dogs on the street know the Superb is a better car. By better I mean more practical and cheaper to keep on the road.
If this is on the market before the Superb, it'll be the first time since the Superb was released that VW is making an estate car with more boot space than Skoda.
LG
This looks really good, nice job VW. It’s too bad this will not be offered in the U.S. for those whose B7 Passats are obsolete and not looking forward to Accord or Camry with CVT. Why can’t a version be built in Chattanooga?
I've always liked the look of the Passat sedans, it's just a shame they ditched that body variant. I wonder if they'll do the same for the North American market which doesn't offer the Superb fastback alternative.
Do you know how ineffective the Passat is at murdering anyone you bump into? You can even see any child tall enough to walk by looking out the windows too, so no insane camera system needed to compensate for awful sight lines. These are not the features the American car industry has been shoving down their customers' throats as being essential for 'safety' for at least 20 years - and they have the increasing road death rates to prove it, the US is running at about twice the EU average per capita death rate or 4 times the rate in the safest of the EU countries 😞. The good news from the US is that road deaths have overtaken gun deaths for the first time in years, so that's kind of like a win 😞.
My understanding is that because diesel engines are restricted or charged extra in some urban emission control zones and most people buying hybrid will expect their car to not have a problem in low emission areas that making a diesel (And having people see how much more fuel efficient it is than a petrol hybrid and buying for this reason) could lead to dissatisfied customers who discover they still have to pay to drive in low emission zones. If VW, or the car industry in general, could be believed regarding the actual pollution level of their engines, this would be less of a problem. It's not like petrol is particularly clean either - diesel is lower greenhouse gas, so it is easier on the planet overall, but more NOx to create local health effects in people when used in urban gridlock. Diesel particulate is filtered out on anything made in the last 15ish years, and petrol particulates look to be potentially more harmful because they make nanoparticles rather than visible soot (And they're only getting filters now), so there's no straight winner on this one between petrol and diesel - it can be argued that even the particles saved on combustion emissions by electric cars are being clawed back by the extra tyre particles caused by their extra weight, but when you consider brake dust and that combustion particulates are the ones with proven negative health impacts, IC cars are still way worse. Until they make replacing the battery a similar price to replacing an IC engine, make batteries actually perform like new for decades or make batteries modular enough that replacing the bad sections in a cost efficient manner is viable, the second hand market isn't jumping on that money pit.
The 50 kW DC charging will remove any reasons for going with diesel anymore for a long trip. Start with a full battery in hybrid mode and use the rest of the charge before the lunch break. Charge the battery during the break and drive the rest of the 800km drive. The petrol consumption will probably be very low.
As a Tiguan owner I'm happy how it drives for an SUV. But if compared to a classical sedan, Tiguan can roll in those corners, so it can make your passengers sick.
I can't stop thinking with 4,92 there would be fantastic Sharan, slick, effcent and still not that heavy as multivan, which btw in near future could be unrelevant with T7 caravelle based on Ford Tourneo recently shown.
@@autogefuehl First of all thanks for replying. Most channels are silent so big up! I think tho, that in the average older 5-10 years old car, it's more common to find good leather as it's still considered as a luxury option than good quality microfiber. Also i think leather must be easier to maintain unstained and dust free than any other fabric. My 2 cents. Cheers!

Unfortunately all the elegance and good proportions of the previous Passat are gone.
This one looks chunky, bulky with really long overhangs in the front and rear.
Technically it's probably a better car but it is far less attractive and charismatic than the previous generation.
Looks like an older generation Renault
I agree, @mart_en
Just looks like a bigger golf. Not just that, they mixed the mk7 and mk8 styling together.
I disagree. This one's gorgeous.
@@UsefulSitesI wanted to comment „looks like a Golf“ but when I look at it with Renault in mind, looks indeed like a Megane.
Passat family is very good car. From Japan.
must have taken them a whole 2 mins to design that interior. Ok stick a tablet in there, we are done. Let's go to lunch
More like 30 seconds. „Let’s search for other manufacturers interior“. Most of the screens look like they are supplied by the same manufacturer.
This b9 model of passat is amazing but i still love my b6 variant more
18:05 all those animations on the instrument panel and the main display in the middle for everyday functions, would piss me off :D
Very nice ... It was about time ... P.s. DIESEL is still THE KING.
Yep, I think we will be driving them for many years to come.
Bummer they don’t make them in the U.S. anymore. Great review, Thomas!
Thanks 🙏
The first and best review on the Passat B9)))
Thanks 🙏 please share 😎
I don't like the front/hood of the new series, looks too much like the Golf front, and well I am old fashioned I guess. Got the previous Passat with the analog meters, somehow for me it is more classy then a full digital cockpit.
I have a MK7 Golf and to me this Passat looks very much alike from the front. Definitely need more differentiation between model families and generations in the looks department.
R-Line lowered, 19" alloys, with a cat back duel exhaust and a ECU tune .. BOOM! 🔥🔥🔥
Yes, leather uses more chemicals and also ends up in landfills.
@@robingoergner725but surely leather will biodegrade which plastic won’t?
A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: czcams.com/video/1pRNkW9nrrw/video.html
And the Kia EV9 with plant-based oil share: czcams.com/video/6vXePQi_MAk/video.html

More and more natural materials are rising: czcams.com/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/video.html
Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: czcams.com/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/video.html
For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: czcams.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/video.html
Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally.

Which one is quieter new Tiguan or new Passat?
I've also switched back from a SUV to a normal fastback car and realized: I was driving a worse car in all aspects just for the ride height (which also turned up being more uncomfortable for me on long drives).
The new Camry looks higher end and more mature design wise.
Great review, clear but detailed!
My mother buy a new passat back in 1974, she really love that car!
Chilli Red Is my favourite Passat Paint Colour 😊
I would choose the Skoda Superb as more stylish and features physical dials 😊
We see her ring Thomas. Congratulations 🥳
hope they bring a true Passat R as a successor to Arteon R shooting brake, sadly they discontinued😢. i mean in older generation they already had a R from passat the Passat R36 with 300hp so it would be nice to see again a R version from Passat😎 and honestly the front looks better with r line design. the elegance doesnt look good in my opinion.
yes but they will stop after 2026 so no successor for this model sadly
Funny how one of the trim lines is called elegance, when there is none elegance at all. At least the last generation had some moderate class, sharp lines, and looked somewhat grown up.
This now looks like a early 2000’s Ford mondeo or something to come out of china 😅
vw and bmw are really struggling in the design department these last couple of years.
That green colour is fire! 😀
Apart from the exterior front design, this is a real winner!
I Love VW ❤️
Thank you. Been waiting for this video to come
I can't decide if it looks worse on the outside or inside. Great review though.
Cheers!
R-line and diesel for me!
Thanks for the movie, as always great job!
Thomas, do you know what is the durability of the DCC pro dumpers? It cost a lot but will it last longer than normal dumpers?
what car does Tomas own and drive?
Maybe car reviewers will start growing a spine and start reviewing the normal gas or diesel engines and stop acting as employees of the car manufacturers and stop pushing their plugin / electric agenda.
Have u even watched the video and seen that we were showing phev vs tdi ?
Yeah, tdi is so much better
Thomas, I test drove a Passat but I decided to buy a Mercedes-Benz sedan--der M-B Wagen ist besser gebaut. You pay more but you get what you pay for. Jedoch ist ein Volkswagen auch gut gebaut--Deutsch gemacht. Also, in your last video Lia had some on-camera time. Du solltest das öfter tun--sie macht deine Videos viel besser. 😉

@@autogefuehl Schoenen Tag noch. 🙂
Its incredibly frustrating how every single car company keeps trying to move "upmarket"
I could literally scream in frustration
Everyone is completely aware how the future keeps getting worse and the economies of major countries arent doing well.
I agree in some ways. But I think its 'the people' that are demanding more. Besides, the cheaper variants are still available out there.
@krane15 True. I think we are constantly use to more and more with each new iteration of things. Eventually it will all break down however. It is definitely difficult to step back from the all the features you know and get into something more stripped down. But at the rate everything is going thats gonna be the outcome.
I don't know what black magic VW did ... months ago i hated the design and now it has grown on me plenty !
A very detailed video Thomas. The updated technology sounds great. The size of the Passat is now too much for my needs, so I hope VW bring back the Golf wagon into Australia for the next model, with these updated tech.
Mariposite green is my pick of colours.
Thanks m8!
I would be interested if you added comments about comfort from Leah in future reviews. We are not all tall like you!.

This generation really shows the influence of Škoda design team which got the job of designing this Passat gen.
How? External design language is basically the same as Tiguan and previous models. Internal also completetly different than Skoda - so where is that influence exactly?
@@mikemarillion5221 didnt you notice the umbrella in the front doors?
@@pavelholub8668 I'm pretty sure VW did the umbrella in the door first, but Skoda tended to put it in without the buyer having to specifically pay extra to get it (Which is part of the reason there are so many people with poverty spec luxury cars as they get the badge, while the budget cars get the spec). More useful and missing from the VW range is the LED torch that acts as a boot light when clipped in position in the boot and is kept charged from the car battery. It even has a magnetic base so it can be stuck to the car when required if you need to check the car at night.
Really really nice and in-depth review Thomas, I am highly appreciating your attention to detail, kind and smooth explanations! Leah is also smiles so nice there it can be visible from the reflections of car :) It might be so nice if she test-drives sometime for the next videos. Great job! Is there option with smaller touch screen? It seems that one is too big.
I notice the cabin lights aren't diffused like in my MK7 Golf
The CD value comparison is for combi Vs combi not sedan vs combi, right?
Wish these were available in the USA 😕
It would be a dismal failure. Americans don't buy wagons anymore.
To bad that there isn’t AWD in the plug in version like Volvo V60 plug in.
I like a lot this car (Superb too, same family). What is the reliability in comparaison of japanese cars ?
It is interesting how Leah converted Thomas from SUVs to wagons
Passenger feedback is vital! And now I also feel it
Definitely more refined than the Skoda Superb in terms of noise levels and driving characteristics but the Superb has a more usable interior and better styling in my opinion.
Elegance Is the Trim that I would pick 😊
I prefer this one to my current passat gte way more elegant and more comfortable. The only problem is the lack of awd like my current passat variant gte.
Thank you Thomas!
By better I mean more practical and cheaper to keep on the road.
as w VW user, i have mixed feelings, Passat looks kinda GOLF'ish? Ofcourse back is really nice. I dunno - i love it and hate it at the same time :)
What about heating in PHEV? With ICE or heat pump?
I really liked your comparison to the Tiguan. I have a hard time choosing.
Thanks, great review.
When Skoda Superb is available for a driving review?
If this is on the market before the Superb, it'll be the first time since the Superb was released that VW is making an estate car with more boot space than Skoda.

This looks really good, nice job VW. It’s too bad this will not be offered in the U.S. for those whose B7 Passats are obsolete and not looking forward to Accord or Camry with CVT. Why can’t a version be built in Chattanooga?
Thanks for another great presentation Thomas. You chose the PHEV over the ICE. What is the weight penalty for the PHEV ?
aprox. 220-250 kg
The charge you more to get a disproportionate screen.
What is fuel consumption and rpm at 130kmph in hybrid?
I've always liked the look of the Passat sedans, it's just a shame they ditched that body variant. I wonder if they'll do the same for the North American market which doesn't offer the Superb fastback alternative.
Another pretty wagon we won't see here in the US :(
Yep, I love my 2019 Golf Sportwagen, but it would be nice to have a PHEV Passat for more space and better economy.
I was wondering, couldn't they've made Diesel+ePHEV Hybrid? Wouldn't that make a car even more a fuel efficient??
Hi, any experience with the basic petrol eTSI non-PHEV engine ? On paper, it looks weak for such a big car but how it works in real life? Thx
I can't stop thinking with 4,92 there would be fantastic Sharan, slick, effcent and still not that heavy as multivan, which btw in near future could be unrelevant with T7 caravelle based on Ford Tourneo recently shown.
the sedan passat was a very handsome car though
Is someone aware what type is the dsg inside the ehybrid? By any chance it is dq250?
How is the microfiber age as oposed to leather?
I ve seen a lot of microfibre cars, also older ones, and I wasnt disappointed so far. All depends on the quality grade
My 2 cents. Cheers!
