Ichigo losing his powers was probably the best thing to happen to Renji, he was doing great before Ichigo showed up, once he did Rukia’s been living in Ichigo’s closet, screaming Ichigo whenever she needs help or if something important popped up. Once he lost his powers Rukia was all Renji’s.
I guess it was the best thing for Orihime as well since all of that bonding time got her out of the friend zone. It’s kind of funny that Rukia named her daughter the female version of Ichigo’s name though.

I think the only way Renji becomes a captain is if Byakuya dies and the Kuchiki family isn't inherently tied to Squad 6. His ultimate goal is tied directly to Byakuya, so I think if Kubo had him become the captain of another squad, it'd be a betrayal of his character.
