Actually, the reason that the controller cables are so short is that people in Japan (prior to wireless controllers becoming the norm, at least) tend to keep their consoles on a living room table or the floor (rather than below or to the side of the TV like we do in the west), so they didn't need to be as long as the NES's. It's an arrangement I've adopted myself, because it allows you to change cartridges, press the reset button, etc without having to get up. Call me lazy if you want, but when you're constantly hitting reset to start over because you keep losing the first race of the Special Circuit in the original "Super Mario Kart", it just makes sense.
This comment is a fucking gem to me, a relic of the past. A time gone by when we didn't care about being funny or getting the most likes. We just said exactly what was on our minds.
You may remember me from six years ago. I planned to buy a Famicom at that time, and asked you about a power adapter or something of that nature. Today, I acquired a Famicom! I still think it's one of the most interesting consoles out there. These videos brought back many great memories of those times!

Short answer: you can use the power adapter that comes with the Famicom, though some have cited overheating issues on the US grid. You can use a Genesis Model 1 adapter from the US, but some overheating may still occur. Some Japanese resellers include a modern adapter that works on 120V no problem. Which was addressed in a later Denshimail video, and will be again (in more detail) in an upcoming video. The how and why of the mapping differences is an interesting story. Perhaps I'll tell the whole thing some day!
@@SeanOrange actually pretty psyched to know that. The original famicom series is basically how I learned all about the various jp versions of things yrs ago. Funny enough I still remember most of these jokes all the same even if it's prob been a decade since I watched it last haha.
The DVD has commentary, specials that aren't available for free, and improvements/glitch fixes from this version. It's also higher-quality. It'll also be a FANTASTIC encouragement for us to make more. ;)
Yeah, I sold a Famicom on ebay years ago, and got a negative rating, because the buyer thought I sold him a "junk" Famicom, because it wouldn't display on channel 1 or 2. Little did he know he should have used channel 95 or 96. Oh well, thankfully ebay no longer uses ratings from 10 years ago to account for your current percentage. I hope Digdugger85 figured out it was channel 95 or 96!
I like the part where the guy intro the system, Wario: Smooth Moves style. You know, that B&W drawing with a calm, soothing male voice speaks like a philospher.
Has anyone noticed that the Wii fits under the Famicom almost perfectly, and resembles a FDS?! You could paint the Wii like the FDS and put the Fami over it and make it look awesomely retro!!!
Way to go. That was definitely one of the better video game history vids I've seen. Can one of you guys help me figure out if my Famicom system is a fake? Mines missing the logo seen on the left front of your system.
By using one of the Disk Writer kiosks that used to be found all across Japan, which I mention at 5:24. The DVD version of this episode was updated with a photo of one of these kiosks. A scaled model of one can also be seen in the new Denshimail - Rare Games episode we did recently.
I was very lucky to not only find a Disk System for an excellent price, but one where the band wasn't broken. Famicom Dojo FTW! But the explanation behind that is probably a whole different installment. Hey, that's not a bad idea...
Well I'm surprised, the show is actually quite good. Of course, it's done more in an educative purpose. Consolevania it ain't but it surely isn't the 1UP show. Keep it up!
I think those are for the newer Famicoms. There was at least one hardware update during its lifecycle. I was able to verify this when we tried to fix a TV/GAME switch, and it didn't have the same internal workings.
Fun fact: you don't "need" the disk drive to play the FDS games the ram adapter the only thing that cares is where is the data is send so you can build your own virtual Disk System to operate a famous and obscure example is the FDSstick which emulate the disk drive as it is
There are lots of modern ways around the old hardware; if you watch our Data Recorder video, we demonstrate how to save and load data for games without a tape deck: Famicom Data Recorder and NES Programmable Series czcams.com/video/__9VYaKMwQI/video.html
You just gave me a really good idea: we should really be reviewing each of these things. I would think it can, but the sound might not work. But that's the sort of thing we would find out for sure by getting our hands on one and doing a review. Stay tuned! :D
Here's how I play Famicom (the original version, not the AV) away from the TV -- Get the RCA Male to Female extension cable for the RF switch, and two indoor extension cords for the AC adapters (one for the Famicom itself (I used the one from Genesis Model 1) and the other for the FDS (I used Casio AD-510 AC adapter)).
@Damauveropolis I'm pretty sure we say in the video, but it's 56KB on each side of the disk for a potential total of 112 -- which include any space needed for game saves.
You will probably have to hook it up through a VCR, which I have been told by reputable sources have been able to detect NTSC signals for quite some time now. It also depends on your TV, so maybe it can too. We will get something together more definitively on the subject with an actual expert in the PAL region! Stay tuned.

Just found this channel and I love it! Quick question, I live in the US. What's the proper way to plug in the Famicom? Is Japanese electricity different from North America? I just don't want to fry it!
VGx7 to awnser your question as long as you have a famicom power adapter then it will be alright to plug in for the us(japan and The USA have the same power socket) Japanese adpaters work fine here due to the power voltage, though never use a NES adapter with a famicom, if yours is missing then their are adapters, like the retro DC
The Family Computer Robot / ROB wasn't released until 1985, and since the Famicom was originally released in 1983 it indeed was released without the Robot and (to my knowledge) was always sold separately. Also, The Family Computer Robot came with Stack Up and not Gyromite like ROB did in the US.
True! But our latest Denshimail (Famicom Controller Replacement) shows just how easy the process is. What isn't as easy is just finding a new controller...
Fascinating stuff. I just imported a boxed Disk System from Japan that I were planning on using with my American NES2 through a pin converter. I might import a classic FamiCom later if I can find one that have been modded to output A/V. That would be best as the NES2 don't support that expanded sound... I bought a "sealed" Metroid and SMB2 with the disk system for the moment.
@TheMarioMan1 The Famicom had its own version of the Zapper, but it was shaped like an actual six-shooter. Even with the more lax toy gun rules in the '80s, there's no way that would fly in the US!
Famicom looks awesome!! I loved the shape and design of that console. The Disk System was a great idea. From that add-on came out for first time, great games like: Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania (the first Castlevania. It actually came from Famicom and not from Arcade or MSX), Super Mario Bros. 2 (the Original & Only SMB 2). Greetings from Mexico. Sorry my bad english
