    The best Flam railway video. Not only do we get to spot the Hulder (or possibly two of them?), but with the wide angle lense we get to see the truly precipitous plunge the line takes on leaving Reinunga, and the almost 'ski jump' approach to Hareina before it plunges once more towards Flam. The scenery, laced with the subtle hues of Autumn adds a stunning backdrop to a truly remarkable railway journey.

    When descending, are you solely relying upon brakes, or are you able to adjust gear ratios à la a car’s transmission?

    • @RailCowGirl
      @RailCowGirl  Před 4 lety +2

      There are no "gears" on electric trains. The "gears" would be completely electronic in the sense of changing the frequency and power of the magnetic field :)
      But yes, we do rely on brakes in the form of electric brakes. Changing the motors from consuming energy to produce energy :) transforming them to generators. If that fails we always have the good old pneumatic brakes :D

    Niiiice - the map at 00:27. Now I have a feel for exactly what that tunnel is doing between the falls and Myrdal. I would guess that the narrowest part of the yellow bit is where we see the tunnel perched on the mountainside at two different levels while we are still down in the "valley".

    What an enchanting journey! I really enjoyed it. Now I'd like to ask you a few questions, if you don't mind:
    1:24- Is that mobile ramp used by the catering service to take the wheeled tray rack into the train?
    6:32- Was the camera at an unstable position?
    8:13- A graffiti? I hope it was made by railway workers to note something... It's very dangerous to enter that narrow tunnel just to make a graffiti.
    32:05- New sleepers at the right of the railway?
    32:13- No sleepers at that stretch? Isn't it dangerous? Or it isn't because the stretch is short and the rails could not topple/fall sidewards?
    33:21- New sleepers in black boxes?
    38:02- What are those blue containers for? I mean, for the thrash generated by the residents or for worn-out material removed from the railway?
    Greetings from Spain!

    Plenty of locos at Flam to choose from (3 parked + this trains loco). Must get busy? Are these locos the system standard or specific to this railway? How much approx. does the down hill journey regenerate into the electrical system compared to the uphill journey as a percentage? There are variables such as loading, weather, station stops and use of friction brakes but every little bit regenerated must help the electrical system balance.

  • @knife-wieldingspidergod5059

    I see an one lane windy road that follows the railroad track along the Flåm Railway. Is that the road people drives in and out of the Flam valley without taking a train? Is that narrow road one way or bi-directional? It's a great road to ride one's bicycle down into the valley and take the train back up.

    • @RailCowGirl
      @RailCowGirl  Před 4 lety +1

      The narrow road you see going up in the the Flåm valley is not for cars and normal traffic :) It's part of Rallar vegen a the road used when the line was constructed.
      The road taking people in and out of Flåm goes over the bridge you see right after the first Level Crossing when we leave Flåm.

    One question, as the train goes downhill does the regenerative braking system on the locomotive pumps electricity back into the electrical line, or is the electricity goes into the resistors and turn it into heat? I assuming the train is not using friction brakes because the brakes would overheat halfway down the valley.

      Reddman Sharp turns: If the train ran much faster, it could derail. There's alway a safety factor, of course. Steep grading: As speed goes up, grip/adhesion decreases and the wheels could slip, which would be really dangerous because the train could not even be braked.

      The light was very blueish in the valley that day. You see it's not that blue when you get down. The shadows has a bluish tint. All of this because we're moving into autumn and winter.

      The song was made exclusively for the Flåm railway and this Huldra show. I don't know the name of it, but unfortunately it is not possible to find as it has not been published anywhere, neither is it for sale.

I apologize for the translation. We watch your videos with the whole family. Good luck with your work and some great videos.
