Oil Leak Resolved on Saab 9-5 - No More Leaky Oil Sump or Oily Catalytic Converter

  • Identifying the horrendous oil leak from the sump that was leaking on the CAT, and causing that distinctive oil smell. The pan was covered in engine oil and it made it impossible to locate the source of the leak. I thought my seals and gaskets were worn and in need of replacement, so I purchased a sump drop-down kit to renew the Seals and O-rings, however, this was not at all necessary.
    Backstory:
    When I purchased my 9-5 it had a leaky sump or PAN (called on other side of the river), as per usual I presumed it was nothing more than worn rubber O-rings or gaskets due to the sheer mileage. However, in due course, it became more evident, the smell of the heated oil when the engine was really hot, especially noted when I opened the door, a strong whiff of that distinctive oil smell will hit me from beneath.
    In July 2019 I decided to address this issue, I had planned to renew all the bottom-end seals to eliminate the leak. I wanted to remove the sump for inspection, I contacted my local Sabb specialist 'Neo Brothers' from Waltham Cross for advice and they advised me that they have a kit for that purpose. I thought happy days and purchased the comprehensive kit without hesitation.
    What I should have done was some research on the removal of a sump on the 2008 Saab 9-5, it turns out there are two variants of the sump. Whilst the 9-5 was above head-level on the ramp, we quickly learned that the sub-frame must be removed to gain full access to the sump. This discovery changed my plans as we did not have the time, replacement parts, or funds to carry out this task.

    It has been over two years since I did that video, I am glad to report that the sump and CAT are free from oil.

    oil pressure switch (which I presume was the issue) is a common problem, it's located above the starter motor - so very difficult to show on a video with the engine still in the car. Some people say you can fix it by tightening it, but generally it leaks through the body of the switch - so tightening it has no effect. The "sludge" (generally caused by rubber hoses in the PCV system breaking down) only affects earlier 9-5's, up to 2005 model year - after that Saab fitted plastic pipes on the vulnerable sections, so the issue mostly went away after then.

      Hi Dude,
      I have not touched the Calibra since the summer, however, I do have one or two videos that I need to upload. In all honesty, I have been rather busy with work/life balance, I can not seem to find the time to bond with my Cally, its been so long that I have forgotten where my tools and parts are it is actually driving my mad. The funds are very limited right now, therefore it means I must do all the work myself, as you can see from the video I am a true cowboy (no offence to the real cowboys).

    Saab oil pressure (safety) switches on Saabs are Traditionally Shit.
    Most all of my Saabs over the years have needed replacement oil switches..
    First one happened when my bought new 1984 Saab 900, on or near it's 2nd Birthday, turned itself into an oil squirter... entire top of the switch fell off.
    Happily the switches are Very inexpensive, at least when bought for another brand of car.
    I've fitted VW intended ones from then on in.

      Nice, do you have a part number for the VW equlvent?
      When I read about I was confused to how or why this is a thing with these blocks, I thought it just might be the design of these sensors or the oil pressure was beyound the scope of threshold.

      Removed the starter motor to provide better access.
      Its been three years now and all is well with mine, however, I keep reading these are prone to cracking.
